BRUNNEMANN (Johann)

Gage, Thomas.
London: J. Nicolson, 1699. Fourth edition. 4th edition, "enlarg'd by the author, with an accurate Map." 8vo., pp[vii], 477, [xviii - table of contents]. Folding map is of Mexico and the West Indies; includes a "grammar of the Indian tongue, called Poconchi or Pocoman." Gage, an Irishman, spent over a decade in Mexico, specifically Chiapas and Guatemala, as a Dominican priest, ministering with his Spanish confreres to the natives. He grew tired of the New World, escaped, returned to England, where he abandoned the Catholic church and eventually became a priest of the Church of England and married. He apparently settled in Jamaica in 1656, shortly after the English conquest of that island from the Spanish, the original idea for which probably came from Gage himself. His life was full of adventures, and, the DNB says, "his book contained most interesting information derived from his personal observations and experiences. He was the first person to give to the world a description of vast regions from which all foreigners had been jealously excluded by the Spanish authorities." In a contemporary mottled calf binding, raised bands, title label; map (of Mexico) is in very good condition. A very good copy.

WAFER, Lionel (died 1705).
London: James Knapton, 1699. 8vo., (7 4/8 x 4 4/8 inches). 2-page publisher's advertisement at the end. Fine folding engraved map of the Isthmus of Darien, and three folding plates (the first with early repairs to verso, some spotting). 19th-century half tan calf, gilt (extremities rubbed). First edition. After a life of high adventure in the South Seas where he joined Buccaneers Sharpe and Dampier in their raids on the Spanish at Panama 1680 and 1681, Wafer escaped marriage to a local Cuna Indian woman and returned to England where he ". established himself as the foremost authority on the Darien isthmus. Dampier deferred to Wafer for descriptions of Darien, claiming he 'is better able to do it than any man that I know' (Dampier, 24). On 2 July 1697, following Dampier's recommendation, Wafer was interviewed by John Locke and the other commissioners of the council of trade and plantation concerning Darien and the projected Scots' colony. Wafer's knowledge of Darien was also sought by the directors of the Darien Company, and the advice he gave them almost certainly influenced the siting of the disastrous Scots' colony in 1698. Wafer was invited to visit the company's directors in Edinburgh in the spring of 1698. He travelled to Scotland as Mr Brown of London, and stayed with Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun where he met the directors before removing to a secret garret in Edinburgh. Having been engaged by the company, Wafer ordered his affairs in preparation for a voyage to Darien, but a mysterious breach dissolved these plans. In the same year he provided the duke of Leeds with a … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRAND, Adam.
Amsterdam Chez Jean-Louis de Lorme 1699 - First French edition. 12mo, [4], 249, [1] pp, engraved frontispiece, double-page engraving of the Pagoda at Siam, large folding map, contemporary calf, morocco label, spine richly gilt, carmine edges; old ownership inscription to title, corners just bumped, small stains to covers else a fine, fresh copy. "Brand was the secretary to Evert Ysbrandszoon Ides' embassy from the Russian Czar to Peking of 1693-95. His [book] is valuable not only for its description of the route and the Siberian tribes he encountered along the way, but especially for his vivid account of the embassy's experiences in China, his description of the Great Wall and Chinese frontier settlements, and his report of the embassy's reception in Peking. Brand includes a brief general description of China, which appears to have been taken from standard published works. His eyewitness reports of the temples he visited, the dust on Peking streets, the negotiations with Chinese officials, the official banquets he attended, and so forth, are his most important contributions to Europe's knowledge of Asia." (Lach). Originally published in German the previous year, shortly followed by an English translation. Cordier Sinica 2469. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
