Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier. A series of indexes. The first 3 volumes cover the years 1699-1734 inclusive and were published in 1741. Volume 1 covers A-E, Volume 2 covers F-O, and Volume 3 covers P-Z. The fourth volume covers the years 1735-1751, A-Z, and was published in 1760. All are in full leather early bindings with spine labels, raised bands and gold gilt decorations. The leather is quite worn at the edges and on the bands, and the volume labels are hard to read (the title labels are ok). Bindings are sound, noting that one headband is torn on the right side. The first three volumes have one plain and one decorated endpaper, the last volume both are marbled. A scarce set. An index of material in the Royal Academy of Sciences History and Memories. Scarce, with very few institutional holding in OCLC. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Captain William Dampier
London: James Knapton, 1699 A good copy of the 1st edition in contemporary speckled calf binding with 4 folding maps. William Dampier was a well-known sailor/buccaneer in the late 1600's. He documented his travels carefully and extensively - noting down what he saw, for example natural history, navigational issues, peoples, and trade. His published works were very popular because he wrote well and clearly. This is the second of his works, published 2 years after the first, and stands alone - covering two supplementary accounts of his voyages and a detailed section on trade winds, currents, weather and tides to aid future navigation. This copy is in a contemporary speckled calf binding with raised bands to spine blind-stamped decoration to boards. It has some wear and loss to the top and bottom of the spine and wear to the front spine joint. Internally there is no pastedown to the front and the ties are visible. The fep has some marking. Contents: initial blank; title page; dedication 2pp; Preface 3pp; Contents 1p; folding map; Part 1pp 1-184 finis; fold map; Part II 1-132 finis; half title; 2 folding maps; Part III 1-112 finis; General Index 76pp; errata; books by James Knapton 3pp. The contents are very clean with the occasional light mark. There is an ink mark to the foredge; loss to the bottom corner of p 67 in part 1 - no text affected; and a small repaired edge tear to the side margin of p63 in Part III. There is some mispagination: Pt I - 129-126-127-132; 137-134-135-140; 141-138-139-144. Pt III - 88-98-90. The text is continuous. A nice copy of an important work.

Amsterdam Chez Jean-Louis de Lorme 1699 - First French edition. 12mo, [4], 249, [1] pp, engraved frontispiece, double-page engraving of the Pagoda at Siam, large folding map, contemporary calf, morocco label, spine richly gilt, carmine edges; old ownership inscription to title, corners just bumped, small stains to covers else a fine, fresh copy. "Brand was the secretary to Evert Ysbrandszoon Ides' embassy from the Russian Czar to Peking of 1693-95. His [book] is valuable not only for its description of the route and the Siberian tribes he encountered along the way, but especially for his vivid account of the embassy's experiences in China, his description of the Great Wall and Chinese frontier settlements, and his report of the embassy's reception in Peking. Brand includes a brief general description of China, which appears to have been taken from standard published works. His eyewitness reports of the temples he visited, the dust on Peking streets, the negotiations with Chinese officials, the official banquets he attended, and so forth, are his most important contributions to Europe's knowledge of Asia." Leipzig, Friedrich Groschuff, 1699. 12mo. (20), 168 pp., including a folding genealogy of Mohammed as *10, bound here before *2. With a woodcut vignette of the Blue Mosque (?) on title-page as well as an engraved frontispiece of Mohammed presenting the Qur'an to the world, along with Zulfiqar (his legendary double-bladed sword), and a dove on his shoulder. Bound with (II): Orientalischer Kirchen-Staat. Gotha, Jakob Mevius, 1699. (2), 155, (1) pp. (and 2 other works). Contemp. vellum. Very rare sole edition of this detailed exposition of the Qur'an for German readers, replete with a frontispiece depicting Mohammed giving the 'Alcoran' to the world as well as a folding genealogy of the Prophet. The preface discusses the threat which Islam poses to the West; and yet Pritius remarks that "meanwhile no-one will be hurt by learning a little more precisely about the opinions of these people, against whom Christendom has so long struggled" (*2v). - Chapter I covers the tenets of Islamic faith, rituals, customs, and pilgrimage. This includes numerous excerpts from the Qur'an and a lengthy discussion of the entire process of the Hajj, as well as the rituals the pilgrims take part in once they arrive in Mecca (pp. 89-113). Chapter II concerns the role of "muftis, priests, monks, and hermits" in Islam; and Chapter III recounts the life and death of Mohammed, taken from the usual European sources. - The inner workings of Islam had long fascinated the German Protestants, who saw an ally in their struggle against the common enemy of the Habsburgs / Roman Catholic Church. BEGON
1699. ______ Format : In-4. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

L[eibniz], G[ottfried] W[ilhelm].
[Hannover, Nikolaus Förster], 1699. - 8vo. 2 parts in one volume. (28), 175, (1) pp. (12), 128 pp. Second part contains: [Joachim Bouvet], Icon regia monarchæ Sinarum nunc regnantis. Both parts with separate title pages and frontispieces (repeated portrait of the Emperor K'ang-hsi); additional engraved dedicatory frontispiece (royal monogram) at the beginning of the volume. Contemp. full vellum with faded ink title to spine. Second edition of Leibniz's collection of texts relating to the Jesuit mission to China, the recent treaty between China and Russia, and the remarkable flowering of scientific culture at Beijing under the Manchu emperor K'ang-hsi (d. 1721). In his preface, Leibniz writes: "I consider it a singular plan of the fates that human cultivation and refinement should today be concentrated, as it were, in the two extremes of our continent, in Europe and in Tschina (as they call it), which adorns the Orient as Europe does the opposite edge of the earth." Leibniz had become interested in China after a meeting with the Jesuit missionary Claudio Filippo Grimaldi, who had been appointed mathematician to the court of Beijing. Grimaldi and Leibniz corresponded, and a letter from Grimaldi, addressed from Goa, is reproduced in the work. Leibniz also includes an extract in Latin from Ferdinand Verbiest's "Astronomia Europea sub Imperatore Tartaro Sinico Cam Hy". Verbiest had been entirely responsible for the reintroduction of Western astronomy to China. First published in 1697, this second edition has an additional appreciation for the Emperor by the Jesuit Joachim Bouvet … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alessandro SPECCHI
Roma, 1699. Acquaforte, in buono stato do conservazione. "Plate from: "Il quarto libro del nuouo teatro delli palazzi in prospettiva di Roma moderna dato in luce sotto il felice pontificato di nostro signore papa Innocenzo XII "published by Domenico de Rossi, Rome 1699. Falda, had been published by Gian Giacomo de Rossi, the Domenico's father, between 1665 and 1669. Etching, in very good condition." 330 216mm
