FONTAINE, Jean de la
1699. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Jean de la Fontaine was without question, the most widely read 17th-century fabulist, and perhaps could be rivaled only by Aesop himself. He wrote for what he intended to be a sophisticated French audience; however, his stories provided important lessons on morality for children and adults alike. Many of Fontaine's fables were adapted from those of Aesop and Phaedrus; though he did take liberties to make them his own. A rare 1699 French edition, published by Brunel. Brunet notes that this particular book is quite 'rare'. Includes an added, engraved title page. Charming. [Attributes: First Edition]

Bentley was the first Englishman to be ranked with the great heroes of classical learning and was known for his literary and textual criticism. Called the "founder of historical philology", Bentley is credited with the creation of the English school of Hellenism, and introduced the first competitive written examinations in a Western university. He wrote the Dissertation on the Epistles of Phalaris (1699), his major academic work, almost accidentally. In 1697, William Wotton, about to bring out a second edition of his Ancient and Modern Learning, asked Bentley to write out a paper exposing the spuriousness of the Epistles of Phalaris, long a subject of academic controversy.[3] The Christ Church editor of Phalaris, Charles Boyle, resented Bentley's paper. He had already quarrelled with Bentley in trying to get the manuscript in the royal library collated for his edition (1695). Bo … [Click Below for Full Description]

CRULL, Jodocus (editor) and BOUVET, Joachim
F. Coggan, London, 1699. Fine copy, with a noble English provenance and unusual binding pattern, of this uncommon, contempo-rary English account of the simultaneous reigns of two great emperors: Peter the Great (1672-1725) and Kang-Hsi (1654-1722). After Smyth or Fletcher s pioneering works, and mostly after Peter the Great s embassy to Europe in 1697-98, more attention was progressively given to the Eastern great powers. This was the opportunity for a few new publications to appear, such as the present work published shortly after Peter s journey to Britain in February-April 1698. It relates in particular the recent Streltsy revolts of 1682 and even 1698, gives some highlights of this Great Embassy , and offers charming physical and historical descriptions, which also include numerous anecdotes with the Chinese emperor, some inter-esting comments on the people and languages of Siberia and on the trade between Russians and Chinese. While Crull (d. 1713?) wrote an Antient [sic] and Present State of Muscovy published in 1698, he appears to be only the editor of the present two letters , which remain the work of an unknown author. The missionary father Bouvet (1656-1730) is the author of the Chinese account, which has a separate pagination under the title The history of Cang-Hy, the present emperour of China, a translation of his Histoire de l empereur de la Chine. Provenance: Thomas Thomson (inscription on flyleaf dated 1716 and sig-nature on title-page); Earls of Macclesfield (armorial bookplate and blindstamp on title); Björn Löwen-dahl (Swedish antiquarian bookdealer speci … [Click Below for Full Description]

BONANNI, Filippo
Ercoli, Rome, 1699. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
