Joseph LANSVELT
Rara. Schedel's monumental Liber Cronicarum was "one of the most extraordinary works ever produced" The woodblock cutters were Michael Wolgemut, the well-known teacher of Albrecht Dürer, and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Wohlgemut was Albrecht Dürer's tutor between 1486-90 and recent scholarship has shown, Albrecht Dürer may also have collaborated, since some of the cuts bear a remarkably close resemblance to the Apocalypse illustrations. The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger, whose printing were famous throughout Europe . Woodcut, in good condition.

Later half calf and marbled boards, title a little dusty and slightly shaved at the fore-edge, leaf A7 also shaved along the fore-edge margin with the loss of a few letters at the bottom of the pages, leaf B2 with fore-edge margin repaired with loss of a few letters, leaves B3-6 with the lower margins shaved without loss of text, leaves C3 and D3-6 similarly affected, leaves D7-8 with top edge margin strengthened without loss, a single worm-hole at the lower edge of gatherings C and D, expanding into a single track only affecting a few letters, despite all of which most of the text is clean and in good order, ex libris RICHARD FREEMAN, Darwin scholar and bibliographer. *WING F2047 ; ESTC R6186 - one of 4 differing imprints in the same year. The settlement of Darien was founded in 1698 on the coast of present-day Panama. It did not last, smitten by malaria and other diseases, lack of supplies, internal dissension, trading difficulties and the constants threat of the Spanish. This pamphlet is a forlorn effort to persuade English interests to become involved and is of especial interest in its descriptions of the indigenous people, their agriculture and the natural history. Johannes Helding was one of several Swedish scholars to take note of its inception. Helding himself did not travel to Africa and so he makes use of both modern and ancient sources in his descriptions as well as speculations. While he describes Mauritanians as ?ad omnia opera servilia perficienda? [roughly: incomplete], he?s generally even handed in his thoughts on the culture. As Joachim Östlund notes in the 2010 translation of this thesis: ?Particulièrement intéressant est le fait qu?il décrit l?Afrique du nord comme une culture supérieure qui fait partie de la civilisation antique et non pas comme une région primitive et une antithèse du monde occidental.? DALE, Anthony van, Translated by Aphra Behn [ edited etc. by Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle ].
Printed by W. O. [William Onley] for Sam. Briscoe, London, 1699. Hardcover. Small octavo. [xiv] + 146pp. + (iipp. - advertisements). Late twentieth century half-brown calf, over marbled paper boards, by renowned London book-binder, Bernard C. Middleton. Gilt stamped leather title-label & blind-stamped rules and decorations on spine. The second English language edition (the first was published in two parts in 1688) of Aphra Behn's translation of Bernard Le Bovier de Fontenelle's "Histoire Des Oracles" (1687), which was itself a French adaptation of a Latin work, the Dutch author Antonius van Dale's (1638 - 1708) "De Oraculis Ethnicorum" (1683). Some idea of the scope of the work can be gathered from it's opening paragraph: "My design is not to give you directly an History of Oracles; I only intend to argue against that common Opinion which attributes 'em to Daemons, and will have 'em to cease at the coming of Jesus Christ. In doing this 'tis necessary that I run through the whole History of Oracles, that I unfold their Originals, their Progress, the different Manners in which they were deliver'd; and lastly their Decay, with the same exactness as if I were in these matters pursuing the Natural and Historical Order." In short, Dale / Fontenelle argued not that the oracles of classical antiquity, were, as the Church had suggested, under Demonic influence, but rather that they were a form of imposture which the priestly classes utilised to manipulate the masses. In seeking to prove the point, the author(s) had to offer a considerable survey of ancient religious practices. From … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ovington (1653-1731), chaplain to James II, upon the kings' removal, was engaged by the East India Company and sailed for India, where he lived in Surat for two and a half years. While there, he became interested in the tea culture of the subcontinent. "During the second half of the seventeenth century three drinks, coffee, chocolate, and tea, gradually became fashionable in England, and books were written on the history and nature of these beverages. In 1699 there appeared [the present work]. DAHLBERG, Erik Jonsson, Count (1625-1703)
[Stockholm: 1699-1715 and later]. 3 volumes. Oblong folio (12 x 15 2/8 inches). Engraved title-pages to volumes II and III only (trimmed and laid down), one portrait of King Charles XI of Sweden, and 26 double-page or folding, 167 full-page, and 80 trimmed and laid down (making a total of 276 or 354) etched and engraved plates of maps, plans, and views by various engravers including J. van den Aveele, Willem Swidde, Jean Marot, Jean Le Pautre, A. Perelle, J. J. von Sandrart, and E. Reitz, most after Count Dahlberg's drawings (some browning, some staining to old folds). Modern brown morocco, gilt. In 1661 Count Dahlberg, Governor of Livonia and Chancellor of the University of Tartu (Estonia), obtained a commission from the Swedish goverment to compile a visual archive of the country's architectural treasures. A team of 18 engravers was hired to transfer his drawings to copperplate (a few of the drawings were by David Klocker-Ehrenstrahl and Elias Brenner). Per Lagerlf wrote a Latin text, but it was only partially printed and never published (it appears in a few copies). It took 21 years to complete the printing of the plates, and the sheets continued to be published throughout the 18th and into the 19th century. During the years in storage many sheets suffered damage to the margins; later issues are thus often characterized by renewed margins. A small number of copies were issued in 1772, with a new title-page bearing that date. Dahlberg was a renowned soldier and engineer from Stockholm. "His early studies took the direction of the science of fortification, and as an engine … [Click Below for Full Description]

Copper engraving, 314x480, probably engraved by J. Lansvelt. A very rare state, with dutch title and dutch name of the seas, of this reduction of the Coronelli view of Venice, first printed in French in Dumont "Voyages de Mr. du Mont en France, en Italie..."; in Moretto, "Venetia, le immagini della Repubblica", n. 118, only the French edition is known. First edition of this remarkable and renowned discourse on the virtues of the "herby-diet" – a landmark in the history of vegetarianism, also including material on landscape gardening, horticulture, and cooking. "Long dismissed as a virtuoso dabbler in the arts and sciences, Evelyn has now come to be recognized as a scholar and participant in the reception of the new science of the seventeenth century His enthusiasm for horticulture in particular, both in his own garden at Sayes Court and in his correspondence and publications, translated continental ideas into England and laid the groundwork for the English landscape garden of the eighteenth century" (DNB). Eminently practical and accessible, the present work approaches its subject with the utmost seriousness. Evelyn apparently saw his work on salad simply as an extension of the movement towards Baconian natural histories espoused by contemporary men of science, as well as a celebration of the joys of gardening, noting that even the greatest men have often "chang'd their scepters for the spade, and their purple for the gardiner's apron". Some cracking to boards, otherwise an excellent, tight, bright copy. An extremely rare first edition of the first biography of Pedro Tellez-Giron, 3rd Duke of Osuna (1574-1624), who was viceroy of Sicily from 1610 to 1616 and of the Kingdom of Naples from 1616 to 1620, during which period both island and Kingdom (the city of Naples and its environs including much of the southern half of Italy) were ruled by the Spanish Hapsburgs. Osuna was one of the most controversial viceroys of Naples of the earlier seventeenth century, his corrupt and unscrupulous ways leading the Spanish crown to enforce a new ruling that future viceroys should not hold office longer than four years. Having displayed a worrying degree of autonomy from Spain, abused his power by overspending and indulging in a notoriously lavish, dissolute lifestyle, and after the resultant growing conflict he had with the local nobility, the Hapsburg court ordered him back to Spain - where, the following year (after the death of Philip III and the decline of the Duke of Lerma), he was arrested and tried on a number of counts including corruption and sexual misconduct. O. O., Joachim Schmedtgen, 1699. "12 Bl., 104, 112, 142, 110, 84 S., 2 Bl.
Bel exemplaire. Ex-libris manuscrit Mr de Vauville. [Attributes: First Edition]
