… [Click Below for Full Description]

Plato.
Paris: Chez Jean Anisson, 1699. This is the first attempt at a collected edition in French, though it includes only ten dialogues. The first full French translation did not appear until the nineteenth century Victor Cousin edition (1822-40). The following works of Plato had not been translated before: Alcibiades II, Euthyphro, Laches, Protagoras, and Les Rivaux. The Dacier Plato was translated into English as The Works of Plato Abridg'd (1701). The English edition constituted the first appearance in English of the first and second Alcibiades, Euthyphron, Theages, Laches, Protagoras, and second appearances of the Apology and Phaedo (which first appeared in English in 1675). The Dacier Plato was the most popular edition of Plato in the eighteenth century. In some later editions, responsibility is transferred to Dacier's wife. AndrŽ Dacier (1651-1722) and his wife Anne Lefevre (1654-1720) were highly respected Hellenist and Latinist scholars who also translated Aristotle, Homer and Epictetus. AndrŽ Dacier was an editor of the Delphin and was librarian to the king. Two volumes, twelvemo. [68 ], 548; [2], 614, [1] pp. With an extensive introduction and a life of Plato. Contemporary calf, gilt-decorated spine, edges sprinkled red. Binding extremities a bit rubbed. Old ownership annotation on front pastedown of each volume ("Comte Frobenius de Furstemberg"). A very good, clean set. First edition of an important translation by AndrŽ Dacier. Though many libraries have various editions of the Dacier Plato, this first edition is rare: OCLC lists five copies (Cornell, New York Public L … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hg. Marieke van Delft, Hans Mulder. Darmstadt 2017.
(FIRE FIGHTING & PREVENTION)
Woodcut illus. in the text (many full-page). 40; 28; 27; 35 folding leaves (complete; pagination irregular & almost meaningless). Three parts in four vols. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers (rubbed & tired), new stitching. Kyoto: Yamatoya, 1699. First edition and very rare; there is no copy of this anonymous work listed in WorldCat. During the Edo period, the major cities of Japan repeatedly suffered from great fires. In the Preface, the nameless author writes that he had studied for many years the sources of uncontrolled fires in Kyoto. He also states that he had developed a number of new methods of fire prevention and firefighting. The author considers the most common sources of fires: heating devices known as kotatsu as well as cooking devices and shrines using candles and incense. Arson was also common. Lightning and strong dry winds in certain seasons could also rapidly spread fires throughout the city. Mosquito netting commonly started fires as well. Certain kinds of manufacturing businesses - tea leaf roasters, manufacturers of oils for illumination and cooking, etc. - were also potential sources of fires. The author also attributes fires to certain deities who have been angered by human transgressions. The author provides a number of methods of fire prevention. In the first volume, there are a number of tools depicted for use by fire fighters: special shoes to enable them to walk on roofs and hot surfaces, devices to force entry, water guns, candles for illumination at night, buckets, ladders, fire retardant fabrics using mud (large sheets of cotton soaked in muddy water an … [Click Below for Full Description]

DUCK, Arthur.
LondonL Richard Chiswell 1699. Old, but not contemporary full leather binding. 6 raised panels to the spine, with gilt panels and label. Bookplate to the inside board. Frontis illustration of Chichele (by M Burghers). A small ink annotation to the ffep shows that the book was purchased for 2 S. 6 d. in 1699 (12.5 pence). 8vo. First edition. Although shown by Duck as almost a Saint, and presented as a Protestant before the Reformation, for his arguments with Pope Martin, a modern view would look at Chichele as a lawyer and diplomat who protected his various prebends and livings at every chance, and who, whilst working to prevent schizm in the Church and Papacy, was nonetheless prone to personal arguments with the popes. The work is dedicated to Archbishop Thomas - this was Thomas Tenison, Archbishop of Canterbury at the time of writing. The binding is in a good clean condition. A little rubbing to the binding edges. still holding well. Internally, generally clean and tidy, with a touch of darkening to the end papers. slight water damage to the edge of the last two leaves (not affecting text). Henry Chichele (1364-1443) from Northamptonshire became Archbishop of Canterbury and founded All Souls College, Oxford. Arthur Duck, was a Fellow of All Souls. 178, [xxii] pp. Expanded, first English language edition (originally published in Latin in 1617.) ESTC R236 (Wing D2430).
