Nine engraved plates. The first English translation of Jean Haudicquer de Blancourt's De l'Art de la Verrerie, a detailed treatise on making and coloring glass, first published in French in 1697. It contains a history of glass, its manufacture, utility and instructions for making glass of all kinds, including eyeballs. Contemporary bookplate of John Wentworth of York on the front paste-down; 20th century German bookplate on the rear paste-down, next to which is the unusual small oval ink stamp that states "This Rare Collector's Item Has Been Acquired Legally / Karl J.E. Liebetrau."

This voyage led the team to meet Emperor Kangxi and begin Russian and Chinese relations, which extended for many years. The contents and experiences of this voyage were recorded by Brand in his only existing work, 'Voyage of Mr. Evert Isbrand.' It features descriptions of Chinese and Russian villages, fortifications, and habitants of these locations. Brand's journal also features an anonymous letter of the present state of Moscow in 1692. An extensive history of the Augustinian convent of Santa Monica, founded in Goa in 1606. The work includes a detailed biography of Aleixo de Meneses, archbishop of Goa and founder of the convent, as well as shorter accounts of other missionaries connected to the institution. Meneses also oversaw the great expansion of Augustinian missionary work in the East. Lach notes that between 1600 and 1610 convents outside Goa were established on the west coast of India, on the Coromandel coast, and in Ceylon and Bengal. The number of friars for these areas also increased from 99 to 155 in the same years. The HISTORIA... provides much information on the Portuguese missions and other aspects of Portuguese expansion in the East. Boxer also used this narrative as a source for early shipwreck narratives. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece vignette, and with 10 other very fine engraved pictorial vignettes as head-pieces, and 10 very beautiful and elaborate tail-piece engravings by Stefano dellla Bella, as well as 3 engraved portraits of Cortez, Montezuma and Solis, the author, engraved by Fariat after the designs of Passari. 4to (mm. 265 x 205), handsomely bound in fine contemporary vellum, the spine with raised bands and with a maroon morocco lettering label framed in gilt. [26], 763 pp. A very fine example, very well preserved, the binding in good order with some occasional spots to the vellum caused by age, the text-block and engravings all in good order. A copy from a fine Roman library. FIRST EDITION IN THE ITALIAN TRANSLATION. The author, was secretary to Philip IV of Spain, and is considered the most important chronicler of the Indies.

Gassendi, Pierre.
London: Printed for John Awnsham and John Churchil, 1699. An uncommon book by Gassendi (1592-1655), the French philosopher, priest, astronomer and mathematician. Richard Popkin (1923-2005), author of The History of Skepticism, notes that Gassendi was one of the first thinkers to formulate the modern "scientific outlook," of moderated skepticism and empiricism. Though fairly well represented in libraries, the book is rare on the market, the last auction record dating from 1980. Octavo. [6], 452, [4] pp. Contemporary paneled calf, recently rebacked with the original gilt-lettered red leather spine label laid down. Some browning to endpapers, intermittent slight toning. Very small hole to pp. 127-128 with partial loss of two letters. Minor tear to pp. 171-172 with loss of a few letters. Discreet contemporary ink signature to recto of front flyleaf. A very good, clean copy. First and only English edition. Franois Bernier translated an abridgment of the philosophical writings of his friend Pierre Gassendi (1592-1655) from Latin into French. The first edition of BernierÕs translations was published under the title AbregŽ de la Philosophie de Gassendi (Paris: J. Langlois, 1674) followed by AbregŽ de la Philosophie. Second PartieÉ, which focused on astronomy and the systems of Ptolemy, Copernicus, and Tycho-BrahŽ, published by Estienne Michellet in 1675.
