Luther Bibles have always maintained their popularity throughout the centuries both in German and non-German speaking areas. This 1699 edition was published in Basel by Johann Jacob Battier and is considered extraordinarily rare. JAILLOT Alexis Hubert
1699. Second edition; quarto (200 x 160 mm); letterpress title-page, printed in red and black, index leaf calling for twenty-two items, eighteen double-page engraved maps, two folding and two single-page scientific diagrams or schemas, many of the maps with armorial borders. Interleaved with four Pieter Schenk plans, three siege plans printed in bistre. 19th century half red morocco over marbled boards, gilt. Some light staining, the paper of the margins a little soft. Paris : Alexis Hubert Jaillot, [but Amsterdam : Pierre Mortier sr.?], Very rare atlas, apparently first published in 1695 and here re-issued in 1699. It comprises maps of the world and five continents (the Americas on two maps), celestial hemispheres, maps of the countries of Europe and Palestine or the Holy Land. This atlas seems to have sparked a resurgence in maps with armorial side borders, heretofore attributed to the slightly later publisher Daniel de la Feuille. The atlas is further indication of the relationship between Jaillot and Pierre Mortier, where Mortier published a sequence of atlases in Amsterdam, disguised under Jaillot?s Paris imprint. Reference: this atlas is unrecorded in Pastoureau; one copy of the 1695 edition (only) has been traced in an institution. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Pseudo-Phalaris; Richard Bentley
London: Printed by J.H. for Henry Mortlock...and John Hartley, 1699. [The History of Scholarship: First important work of classical scholarship written in a modern language] First ed. Bound in modern, polished, calf. cxii, 549 [i.e. 545], [11]pp index. Generally clean, unmarked pages. All edges stained red. In this work Richard Bentley successfully disproved the authenticity of the Epistles of Phalaris. Bentley was able to show through historical research and criticism that the work was a forgery by a Greek rhetorician produced during the time of Christ. "Bentley, one the most brilliant classical scholars of that or any other day, is here represented by the first edition of his most important single work, which put Greek scholarship on a new and firm basis. Among other things, the book exposed the scholar pretensions of Swift's patron Temple, and caused Swift to pillory Bentley for all time in 'the Battle of the Books. ' For that and other reasons, Swift's friend Pope gave Bentley a prominent place among the dunces in his 'Dunciad. '" Wing B1928. ESTC R21147. Good. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

WAFER, Lionel.
London: James Knapton, 1699. Octavo, with a map and three folding engraved plates; with the 2 pp Knapton advertisements at the end; a good copy in contemporary calf; skillfully respined preserving earlier manuscript label. First edition: one of the series of rarities relating to the buccaneers and William Dampier. It was published by Dampier's publisher Knapton. Wafer, surgeon on a trading vessel, had deserted in the West Indies in 1679, and joined the loose band of buccaneers which included Lynch and Cook, and eventually brought him into contact with Dampier. After the quarrel which divided the buccaneers, Wafer was part of the faction which attempted to cross the Isthmus at Panama. Badly burned in an accident, the surgeon was left behind among the Darien Indians until he recovered. Even the often ill-tempered Dampier was worried about his loss, writing 'we allowed him a Slave to carry his things, being all of us the more concern'd at the Accident, because liable our selves every Moment to Misfortune, and none to look after us but him'. However, Wafer's accident did have the unforeseen effect of producing one of the most important English works on the region. He gained the confidence of the Indians and was able to record much first-hand information about them and about the area. He temporarily adopted their distinctive dress, and when he returned to his shipmates sat amongst them unrecognised for almost an hour, until one suddenly exclaimed 'Here's our doctor!'. Wafer stresses the advantages to be gained from an English settlement on the Isthmus: 'a free passage by land, f … [Click Below for Full Description]

HACKE, William.
London: James Knapton, 1699. Octavo, with three folding maps and three engraved plates, two woodcuts in the text; with the blank leaf D8, and complete with the three pages of publication announcements by Knapton bound in at the end; an attractive copy in contemporary speckled calf, neatly respined. Scarce first edition of this famous collection, one of the important works issued by the publisher Knapton to capitalise on the best-selling account of Dampier's first voyage to the South Seas. The work was prepared by William Hacke, who claimed to be a buccaneer himself but seems to have been more of an armchair pirate, making his living in London's Wapping from selling rutters, manuscript atlases copied from the "derroteros" plundered from Spanish vessels. His collection brings together the accounts of four voyages (by Cowley -- who sailed with Dampier, Sharp, Wood -- who sailed with Narborough, and Roberts) which provide important source material for the history of their voyages, which were essentially private enterprise expeditions, but were responsible for considerably extending geographical knowledge. Cowley, who sailed for many months with Dampier in the early 1680s, sailed further south than had previously been done, and named some of the Galapagos Islands. His narrative is accompanied by a fine world map which marks his track across the Pacific to Guam, China and then through the Straits of Sunda and the Cape of Good Hope. Similarly, Sharp provides perceptive observations on Panama and the west coast of South America and was the Captain responsible for carrying off a Spa … [Click Below for Full Description]

COLLIER, Jeremy
London: for S. Keble ... R. Sare ... and H. Hindmarsh, 1699. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 1699 1ed Jeremey Collier Defense of Short View of English Theater Puritan Plays Jeremy Collier was a 17th-century English theater critic who, in 1698, wrote a highly controversial attack on English comedies. 'Short View of the Immorality and Profaneness of the English Stage' was filled with Collier's views on what he considered to be profanity and immorality in English plays. He believed plays should be providing moral encouragement, rather than encouraging unethical vices. Immediately after Collier's 'Short View' was released, playwrights quickly responded with their own attacks on Collier's views. Naturally, Collier published his own defense of his 'Short View' which focused heavily on the content William Congreve's plays. This 1699 first edition of 'Defense' is a fine printing of the literary war between Puritan restrictions and English dramatists! LISTER, Dr Martin
London John Tonson 1699. 12x19.5cm. Two volumes bound together: A Journey To Paris in The Year 1698, 3rd Edition, vi, 248, 6 plates, 2 folding; A Journey To London, In the Year 1698, 2nd Edition, viii, 36. Contemporary blind stamp panelled calf, rebacked a considerable time ago, spine with leather label lettered in gilt and date at the foot. The corners of the boards are very worn and there are areas of calf missing from front board near the fore edge and the rear board near to the joint. There are what appear to be two worm holes in the rebacked leather, though no further sign of worm damage. The binding is firm and square. Internally, there is a bookplate to the front pastedown. There is water staining mainly to the fore edge margins of most pages and more substantially across many others, such that virtually every page is affected to some extent. One of the two folding plates has one half missing. Over all, a very presentable volume unusual in that it includes the extremely scarce William King parody of Lister. (A Journey To London 1698 is presented as a translation from the French of Samuel Sorbiére is in fact a satire on the mans works by William King). A manuscript archive of hundreds of documents relating to the family, business and political affairs of the heirs of Nathaniel Sylvester, one of the three original owners of Shelter Island, which documents the way the Sylvester, Dering, Dinkel, Steuart, Rysam, Fosdick, Gardiner, Wentworth and Havens families lived and worked in Colonial America as proprietors on Shelter Island and as shipping and whaling entrepreneurs in Sag Harbor. With 116 principal documents from 1700 – 1799, one may follow the intermarriages of the original Dutch families in New Amsterdam and subsequently in New York during colonial administration. Also, from their business interactions and marriages, one may learn much about such colonial institutions such as the enslavement of people of color, bought from the Faneuil family in Boston, for instance. From a suite of ten extraordinary letters written by Hannah Sylvester, between 1702 and 1720, written to her husband's neglectful executor, advocating for her own cause in terms any modern advocate would admire, one may read first-hand the abusive, discriminatory and sexist legal constraints enforced on women in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and, by extension in the Province of New York. The archive is not without interesting and, at times, amusing appearances of prominent colonial personalities such as Edward Hyde, self-identified in this archive in an extraordinary attestation, as "Edward Viscount Cornbury Capt[ain] Gentl[man?] and Governor in Chief of the Provin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kawachiya Shigeru Shiba: Genroku, 1699. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A rare, 17th century woodblock print collection bound in the "fukurotoji (variously translated as "bound-pocket," or "pouch" binding)" style (Keio). The text gives kanji (Chinese characters), and Japanese pronunciation in katakana on the right to help Japanese readers. This rare, 1699 set is an early history of the Western Chinese Han Dynasty! The Han Dynasty was one of the longest of China's major dynasties. In terms of power and prestige, the Han Dynasty in the East rivalled its almost contemporary Roman Empire in the West. With only minor interruptions it lasted a span of over four centuries and was considered a golden age in Chinese history especially in arts, politics and technology. All subsequent Chinese dynasties looked back to the Han period as an inspiring model of a united empire and self-perpetuating government.

1699. A critical edition of the N.T., undertaken by J. Leusden (see Nos. 4717 and 5131), of Utrecht and C. Schaaf, of Leyden. J. Leusden died in 1699, when the work had reached Luke xv. 20, and his colleague completed the task alone. The editors had disagreed about the system of pointing to be adopted. Accordingly up to Luke xviii. 26 they give the Chaldean system, used by Tremellius and others, which J. Leusden preferred. After Luke xviii. 26 the pointing follows the Syrian system, used in the Paris and London Polyglots and approved by C. Schaaf. The Latin version is C. Schaaf's revision of Tremelis' translation. 242x189 mm. Box 14.

Rome: Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi, 1665; Domenico de Rossi, 1699 First edition of Giovanni Battista Falda's handsome three-volume suite of engravings of the magnificent palaces, churches, monuments and edifices of Rome erected by, or during the pontificacy of, Pope Alexander VII. Alessandro Specchi's Il Primo Libro del nuovo teatro. (1699) was issued as the fourth volume of Falda's work in 1699. It was evidently a popular work; a fifth volume, by Giovanni Domenico Campiglia appeared in 1739. This is a later impression, after 1699, of the first three books, as the paper used is the same throughout (with the watermark of a fleur-de-lis enclosed in two concentric circles). In the first impression of the first three volumes the plates were not numbered; RIBA suggests that numbering didn't take place until 1699 with the publication of Specchi's work. Heawood dates this watermark to 1705. An apprentice in Bernini's studio, Falda's detailed depictions of the baroque splendour of the eternal city were extremely popular with early waves of grand tourists, and his style marked a departure from previous architectural depictions. JEANNE-MARGUERITE DE MONTMORENCY 1646-1700 [Jansénisme]
[Click Below for Full Description]

Rara. Schedel's monumental Liber Cronicarum was "one of the most extraordinary works ever produced" The woodblock cutters were Michael Wolgemut, the well-known teacher of Albrecht Dürer, and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Wohlgemut was Albrecht Dürer's tutor between 1486-90 and recent scholarship has shown, Albrecht Dürer may also have collaborated, since some of the cuts bear a remarkably close resemblance to the Apocalypse illustrations. The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger, whose printing were famous throughout Europe . Woodcut, in good condition.

"Richly engraved decorative map of North America, showing California as and Island, by Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) for his Atlas Novus exhibens orbem terraguem per naturae opera, historiae navae acveterus monumenta, artistique geographicae leges et praecepta...published in eight volumes from 1702-1710 in Munich. Scherer, a devout Jesuit, produced this geographical compendium to depict the Catholic hierarchy and the spread of Jesuit missions throughout the world. The Great Lakes are prominently depicted and the Mississippi River originates in two large lakes in present-day Canada, and empties into the ""Sinus Mexicanus"" too far west. The map is decorated with a title cartouche, distance scale, ships and sea monsters. Copper engraving, in very good condition." Tooley (America) p. 131

Vinne, Joacob Laurensz van der (1688-1737) after Ostade, Adriaen van (1610-1685) and Brakenburg, Richard (1650-1702)
1699. Complete set of seven etchings van der Vinne realized when he was just eleven years old. All the plates are copied after Adriaen van Ostade's works and are in reverse. The set is stitched on the left as a small album. The set is signed on the first etching: 'Jacob Vander Vinne fecit et excudit / ANNN(sic!) 1699'. The frontispiece features three heads of old men, the one in the middle in a square frame, the ones on the sides in rounded frames. The second plate, 'The seller of Spectacles' has been retouched with pen and brown ink on the fence of the window, on the top left. The third plate, 'The empty jug' shows three peasants in an inn conversing around a table, looking at an empty jug. The fourth plate depicts a knife grinder, working in the middle of the street. On the bottom of the fifth plate, the 'Pater Familias' is an inscription in Dutch: 'Eet soete kintjes eet je livertjes sijne Reet'. The sixth plate shows a small concert, as in an interior a man plays the violin while a woman sings and another man, sitting opposite to the woman, sings along with a glass of beer in his hand. The last plate from the set is a copy after a painting by Richard Brakenburg (1650-1702). Possibly, this last impression is the same etching inv. RP-P-1934-600 at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, reported as 'Anonymous copy after Brakenburg'. [NL-Ab Van der Steur: 'Serie van zeven etsen inclusief een titelblad, gedateerd 1699. COLLIER, Jeremy
London: for S. Keble ... R. Sare ... and H. Hindmarsh, 1699. 1699 1ed Jeremey Collier Defense of Short View of English Theater Puritan PlaysJeremy Collier was a 17th-century English theater critic who, in 1698, wrote a highly controversial attack on English comedies. This 1699 first edition of 'Defense' is a fine printing of the literary war between Puritan restrictions and English dramatists!Item number: #7812Price: $750COLLIER, JeremyA defence of the Short view of the profaneness and immorality of the English stage, being a reply to Mr. Congreve's Amendments, &c. and to the Vindication of the author of the relapse.London: Printed for S. LESLIE, Charles
for C. Brome at the Gun, W. Keblewhite at the Swan in St. Paul's Church-yard, H. Hindmarsh, at the Golden-Ball, and E. Poole, at the Half-Moon, near the Royal-Exchange in Cornhil. 1699 Method with Deists Jews Atheism Christianity Proof IRISH Charles Leslie While not as widely popular as John Locke treatises of Christianity, Charles Leslie published several works that supported Locke’s views and proofs of Christianity. According to Craig, “John Locke set the pattern for English thought by his defense of the reasonableness of Christianity on the basis of Jesus’ miracles. It was Charles Leslie who enunciated clearly the method of proving Christianity by the facts in his ‘Short and Easie Method with the Desits’.” (p.165) Leslie’s ‘Method’ would become the historical ‘proof’ of the foundation of Christianity. He explains that if one reads the Bible as they would any other book, they would see that it is historically reliable. His best argument was that if a reader rejects the Bible, they must also reject the historical works of antiquity. Leslie wrote this book to prove Christianity to Jews and deists; written as a letter to a friend. Item number: #7736 Price: $599 LESLIE, Charles A short and easie method with the deists· Wherein, the certainty of the Christian religion is demonstrated by infallible proof: from four rules, which are incompatible to any imposture that ever yet has been, or that can possibly be. In a letter to a friend. The second edition. To which is added, a second part to the Jews· Shewing, that these four rules do oblidge them as much, or more than the deists … [Click Below for Full Description]
