BAKER (Thomas):
wherein is shewn the Insufficiency thereof, in its several Particulars: in order to evince the Usefulness and Necessity of Revelation, First Edition, xvi, 248pp 8vo, contemporary calf, upper joint partly cracked and light wear to upper edge of boards, else a very good copy, tear at foot of one leaf (F8) neatly repaired but with loss of just one or two letters, London, Bosvile, 1699. Thomas Baker (1656-1740) is chiefly remembered for this work which went through seven editions. It was a work of orthodoxy, being designed to enforce the insufficiency of the human understanding and of science as guides for the formation of belief and the conduct of life, and stands in direct contrast to Locke in its avowed intention of proving "the weakness of the human understanding". Nevertheless it remains an important text for the student of the period. Photograph available on request.

Locke, John
London: Printed for A. and J. Churchill,.. 1699 Fourth edition. Eighteenth-century calf, rebacked, corners repaired. . Octavo. A good crisp copy. Yolton 168, notes that "The work is largely a reprint of the third, but with new errors, especially of spelling, introduced. There are a few substantial changes: Section 7 is expanded by one page, S 94 by half a page, and SS's 192-3 are slightly rephrased. The only large addition occurs in S 167, the section headed 'Latin', where more details about the skills of a tutor or teacher needed to encourage and instruct his pupil are described" (Attig 525).

BONNEFONS, Nicolas de]
Bordeaux: Chez Simon Boe, 1699. Small 8vo, pp. 264. Bound in contemporary full calf, spine gilt. Contemporary name on the title-page. Closed tear to one leaf (with very minimal loss). A very nice clean copy. Rare, this edition not in OCLC; which lists just a Paris 1741 edition with this title; Querard 3, col. 345; See Henrey, volume 1, p. 186; see Bitting p. 48 (who lists a 1684 edition and indicates that the first edition was issued in 1650, but that it has never been seen). This book, under the title: "Le Jardinier Francois" was written by Bonnefons and published in Paris in 1651. It was popular enough that a 4th edition was issued in 1654. It was translated by John Evelyn in 1658, being his first published work on horticulture. Evelyn notes that this book was "the first and best of that kind that introduced the use of the olitorie (ie kitchen) garden to any purpose"[Henrey Vol. 1, p. 186]. Bitting: "The work is divided into three parts: the first treats of the soil; the second treats fruits and vegetables; the third is about the manner of conserving fruits in their natural state, dry, with salt and vinegar, sweet wine, cider, and honey, liquid with sugar, dry and pastes, conserves of flowers and massepains." Esquemeling, Alexander Oliver, [et al]:
London. 1699.. London. 1699.. [4],180,[4],180,[12],204pp. plus fourteen plates and numerous in-text maps and illustrations. Contemporary calf, rebacked, spine gilt, leather label. Boards rubbed at extremities. Bookplate on front pastedown. Light soiling, some light tanning. About very good. The best and most extensive account of the British and French pirates of the Caribbean, and the primary source book on the romantic era of freebooting on the Spanish Main. This work has served as the basis for many novels, stories and dramas, as well as establishing the reputations of a number of pirates. A collection of four works, including that of Esquemeling; an account by Basil Ringrose, first published in 1685 as BUCANIERS OF AMERICA; Raveneau de Lussan's JOURNAL OF A VOYAGE; and the fourth part, Montauban's RELATION OF A VOYAGE. EUROPEAN AMERICANA indicates that a separate titlepage appears before part three (Raveneau de Lussan), which is not present here. At least one of those described in the work was not happy with the way he was portrayed: Sir Henry Morgan sued for defamation of character, and was awarded £200 and a public apology. The plates include portraits of some of the buccaneers in the narrative, including Morgan, as well as numerous maps of areas in Latin America. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 699/72. SABIN 23483. Evelyn, John
Tooke, London, 1699. [1]ff, [36], 192pp, [49] including errata leaf. Bound in contemporary blindstamped calf re-backed with modern calf spine, modern black/gilt title label to spine, extremities a little worn, modern endpapers, first leaf of dedication bound backwards, leaf M4 in 18th C (?) manuscript, folding table sadly lacking, slight loss to lower corner of three leaves of index (barely affecting text), pages otherwise clean and fresh, a pleasant copy. First edition of this remarkable and renowned discourse on the virtues of the "herby-diet" – a landmark in the history of vegetarianism, also including material on landscape gardening, horticulture, and cooking. "Long dismissed as a virtuoso dabbler in the arts and sciences, Evelyn has now come to be recognized as a scholar and participant in the reception of the new science of the seventeenth century His enthusiasm for horticulture in particular, both in his own garden at Sayes Court and in his correspondence and publications, translated continental ideas into England and laid the groundwork for the English landscape garden of the eighteenth century" (DNB). Eminently practical and accessible, the present work approaches its subject with the utmost seriousness. Evelyn apparently saw his work on salad simply as an extension of the movement towards Baconian natural histories espoused by contemporary men of science, as well as a celebration of the joys of gardening, noting that even the greatest men have often "chang'd their scepters for the spade, and their purple for the gardiner's apron". FÉNELON, FR. de SALIGNAC de la MOTHE). - [MAIN WORK OF UTOPIAN LITERATURE]
Bruxelles, Fr. Foppens, 1699. Small 8vo (12mo). Bound in a beautiful later full calf (ca. 1800) w. five raised bands on back. Gilt back and blindstamped ornamental borders on boards. All edges of boards gilt, and gilt borders on inside of boards. Hinges cracked and boards loosening, inner hinges crudely repaired. A bit of brownspotting, but internally a very nice copy. The very rare Bruxelles-edition, published same year as the first edition (Paris, Barbin). Fénelon's main work, written when he was a tutor to the Duke of Burgundy in order to hold up Ulysses as an example for the young prince. Fénelon was a leader of the Quetism heresy, and in 1699, the year Télemaque appeared, Pope Innocent XII condemned his writings. The true first edition of Fénélon's Télemaque appeared in one volume in 1699 under the title "Suite du quatrième livre de l'Odyssée d'Homère, ou les Aventures de Télémaque, fils d'Ulysse", and containing only half of what we consider Télémaque today. According to Brunet, the first edition was suppressed, and Moetjens printed a pirate-edition (called the second edition) in Haag with the same year and date (June), and a bit later the same year, the second part appeared. Several editions appeared the same year, and Brunet mentions one without printer or Place (but Paris), and the Liége- and Bruxelles-editions. "Dans les différentes éditions que nous venons de décrire dans lesquelles il le soit sont celles de LIÉGE, 1699, et de BRUXELLES, FR. FOPPENS, même date, l'une et l'autre impr. en France, en 2 vol. in-12, et en dix livres." (Brunet II:1212). Foppens also pr … [Click Below for Full Description]

La vente s'en fera en détail au plus offrant & dernier Encherisseur. Le 16. Novembre 1699 & autres jours suivans. 1 p.l., 38 pp.; 138 pp., one leaf of errata, one leaf of an "Appendix" of additional books. Two parts in one vol. 12mo, cont. mottled sheep (slightly rubbed), spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: [S. Moette & Boudot], 1699. The extremely rare catalogue of what is very likely the first sale by auction of an important library issued in Paris. This catalogue has all the earmarks of an early auction catalogue: lot numbers and the wording of the "Avertissement" on the verso of the title strongly suggests this was an auction. Additionally, and this may be unique in our copy, each lot in the print catalogue and the first 410 lots of the book catalogue have been priced in a contemporary hand, giving further evidence and strength to this catalogue's priority over the Bigot sale of 1706 (which is certainly an auction). See Pollard & Ehrman, Table XXV (Pollard stating he believes it is an inventory catalogue) and page 237 (where he strongly suggests it could be an auction catalogue). Boucot (d. 1699), lawyer, councillor, and secretary to the King, formed one of the largest and most famous collections of books, prints, drawings, and manuscripts in Paris in the 17th century. For a detailed account of his activities, see Antoine Schnapper's Curieux du grand siècle, les collectionneurs d'art au XVIIe siècle (1994). The catalogue consists of two parts. Gilbourne at the corner of Chancery-lane in Fleet-street, and W. Davis at the Black Bull in Cornhill, 1699. Octavo. [184] pages. First edition. Title within double line border. Text in double columns. A4, B8-M8. In a modern Cambridge panel-style binding. Wing E5. Washed. Lower margin extended in a number of leaves, rarely affecting text. The book must have been in a fire, charring the lower part of the pages, but luckily not affecting the text. A stain, starting around I6, and getting worse toward the end, in the lower right-hand margin of the book. For all the faults described, still a very good copy.. First Edition.

La Vauguion, M. de la
London Henry Bonwick [etc.], 1699, hardcover. SCARCE. "The whole illustrated with copper plates, explaining the several bandages, sutures, and divers usefull instruments. Faithfully done into English." Collation: [24] 447 [9] pages. Last page has handwritten: "County Fermanagh 1700 [?]" Apparently original leather covers, blind-stamped. -- Condition: fair only: this copy is complete including the 12 plates at rear, but covers are loose and backing is missing; title page loose, edgeworn, with some marks (name inked out but 1787 date remains); pages are browned and irregularly stained but easily readable, with some marginal pencil. -- SCARCE, worthy of restoration for the History of Medicine collector. -- A critique of La Vauguion's technique for closing abdominal surgery (allowing Nature to take its course rather than "shaking the gut", page 25) appeared nearly 200 years later in The Lancet, January 11, 1890.

[Esquemelin; Exquemeling; Oexmelin] Exquemelin, Alexander Olivier
Very rare French edition, finely printed, of what´s arguably the most influential account of pirates of the Caribbean. 1699. Paris. Jacques Lefebvre. Two volumes in 12mo (158 mm x 90 mm). Frontispiece + 8 ff. + 483 [484] + 1 ff.; 2 ff. + 537 + 5 ff. + 7 folding maps and views. Elegant 20th century calf in period-style, boards with single gilt fillet, raised bands and labels to spine, lettered in gilt, hinges starting, some rubbing, generally fine. Very good, edges gilt, paper mildly browned, but still a most desirable copy. Third French edition ?the first appeared in 1686. The translation was prepared by Frontigniéres, adding and revising it apparently against Exquemeling´s own manuscript; the first edition in all was published in Dutch in 1678 under the title De Americaensche Zee-Roovers. The success was immediate, translations followed and editions continued until the 18th century. Exquemeling (1645 ? 1707) was a French Huguenot, in 1666 made sale towards the Antilles, his ship was allegedly attacked by pirates and after reaching Tortuga he was apparently sold to a local who subsequently sold to a surgeon of some sort, he would teach him his office and eventually grant him his freedom against payment. At an uncertain date, Exquemelin became a privateer; as a pirate, he participated in the raid of Maracaibo in 1669 and that of Panama in 1670 under Morgan. His experiences and observations were concentrated in his memoires. The detail with which Exquemeling describes the lootings, plundering, life and adventures of these seamen is, and was unequaled for a long time. The illu … [Click Below for Full Description]
