HARRIS, Walter.)
London: Printed, and Sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster, 1699. London: Printed, and Sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster,, 1699. Octavo (189 x 117 mm). Disbound pamphlet, residue of original spine, red speckled edges. Without the half-title. Slightly rolled, last page a little soiled but otherwise clean internally. A very good copy. First edition of Walter Harris's rebuttal to A Defence of the Scots Settlement at Darien, published the same year and variously attributed to Archibald Foyer, George Ridpath, Andrew Fletcher and James Watson. That pamphlet had optimistically attempted, shortly before the Darien Scheme was abandoned, to convince the English to support the project, no doubt hoping to get their navy behind the scheme in the face of Spanish hostility. Harris's response goes through each paragraph (which is reprinted, essentially making this two works in one), rejecting the author's claims that England had obligation and interests in supporting the scheme. Dr. Robert John Thornton
London, 1699. "[Passiflora caerulea L.] The species of Passion Flower depicted in this plate, a native of Brazil and Peru and known in Europe since 1699, was the first discovered that was hardy in the cooler regions of the earth and could therefore, in Thornton's time, when glasshouses were less common, be more easily grown over a larger area of the world. Its flowers are only faintly scented and last but one day, but they are produced over several months, and plants flowering first in June often continue until October. In this plate both flowers and leaves have been depicted by the painter, Philip Reinagle, with life-like accuracy and engraved by Caldwell with a masterly fidelity. The delicate stipple of the flowers and their modelling, and that of the leaves is of a standard not often reached." (Ronald King, The Temple of Flora by Robert Thornton, 1981, p. 80)This dramatic folio botanical engraving is from Dr. Robert John Thornton’s work "New Illustration of the Sexual System of.Linnaeus. Comprehending. The Temple of Flora". The work was published in London by between 1787 and 1810. Each engraving was made using stipple, mezzotint, and aquatint processes and feature hand-coloring heightened with gum Arabic. --- Thornton’s engravings featured an uncommon composition in which the subject was seen oversized in relation to the background giving the plates a theatrical presence. "Temple of Flora" is often considered the greatest achievement in British botanical art. Thornton employed some of the foremost artists to create the plates included Peter Charles Henderson, Philip … [Click Below for Full Description]

DARIEN SCHEME.) PHILO-CALEDON, pseud.
Edinburgh: Printed in the Year, 1699. Edinburgh: Printed in the Year,, 1699. Octavo (188 x 119 mm). Disbound pamphlet, earlier spine residue and sew-holes in margin. Lacking the final blank. Title page a little soiled with horizontal crease, final signature loosening at head, generally a little toned and soiled. A good copy. One of four editions of that year, without established priority. An optimistic attempt, shortly before the Darien Scheme was abandoned, to convince the English to support the project, no doubt hoping to get their navy behind the scheme in the face of Spanish hostility. Of particular note is that the pamphlet gives an account of the settlement and settlers, as well as of the indigenous people, and the region's climate, history, flora and fauna, offering a rosy picture of a region with little economic potential and which even today is barely inhabited. The work is anonymous, with the pseudonym of Philo-Caledon, but Scott notes "According to a manuscript note in the librarian's copy for the Catalogue of the New College Library (Edin. 1868), the author is Archibald Foyer" (Scott p. 22), and the Foyer attribution is upheld by Wing, Goldsmiths and Kress. The work has also been attributed to George Ridpath, Andrew Fletcher and James Watson. ESTC R6186; Goldsmiths' 3584; Kress 2117; Sabin 78211; Wing F2047. Wallis, John
Oxford: Sheldonian Theatre [University Press], 1695, 1693, 1699. First edition, very rare when complete as here, of the collected works of John Wallis (1649-1703), one of Newton's most important precursors, containing the first printed appearance of Newton's ideas on fluxions. Wallis repeatedly urged Newton to publish his theories before others laid claim to his work, but Newton resisted for many years. Wallis published several letters from Newton in vol. II of his 'Opera,' thereby introducing fluxional notation (dotted and pricked letters). In the preface to vol. I (1695) Wallis refers briefly to Newton's claim to the discovery of fluxions, while vol. II (1693) has the first full account of Newton's invention of the calculus. Vol. III (1699) contains previously unpublished correspondence between Newton and Leibniz, the most important of which are Newton's 'Epsitola prior' and 'Epistola posterior.' "These two lengthy letters were sent to Leibniz in 1676 to acqaint him with the main lines of Newton's mathematical development . . . 'Epistola prior,' beginning with the binomial theorem, went on to describe Newton's work on series . . . The second latter also contains much discussion of infinite series. It is best known, however, for Newton's reference to powerful and general methods he had developed for the drawing of tangents, the determination of maxima and minima, and the quadrature of curves. These, he added, he preferred to conceal within a quite insoluble anagram. A second, and even longer, anagram concealed Newton's claim to be able to solve fluxional equations . . . 1699. Rara. Schedel's monumental Liber Cronicarum was "one of the most extraordinary works ever produced" The woodblock cutters were Michael Wolgemut, the well-known teacher of Albrecht Dürer, and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. Wohlgemut was Albrecht Dürer's tutor between 1486-90 and recent scholarship has shown, Albrecht Dürer may also have collaborated, since some of the cuts bear a remarkably close resemblance to the Apocalypse illustrations. The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger, whose printing were famous throughout Europe . Woodcut, in good condition. Henrick SCHERER (Dilingen 1628 - Monaco 1704)
1699. "Decorativa carta geografica pubblicata nell'opera di Heinrich Scherer ""Atlas Novus exhibens orbem terraguem per naturae opera, historiae navae acveterus monumenta, artistique geographicae leges et praecepta.."" edito in 8 parti, dal 1702 al 1710 a Monaco. Incisione in rame, in ottimo stato di conservazione." This unusual polar projection depicts the entire world except the South Pole. California is shown as an island and there is a suggestion of a Northwest Passage via Hudson Bay. There is a distorted portion of Australia noted as Nova Hollandia. The map has delightful depictions of birds and wind heads in the heavens as well as fish and monsters swimming the seas. The beautiful cartouche is filled with animals and two small astronomical diagrams flank the map. Heinrich Scherer, professor of mathematics at Munich, was a devout Jesuit whose work emphasized the Catholic hierarchy and the spread of Jesuit missions throughout the world. The important, large river systems are exceptionally well illustrated. Many placenames are included in the interior as well as on the coasts. Heinrich Scherer was a devout Jesuit, and professor of mathematics at Munich. His 'Atlas Novus' contained maps of all other parts which showed the spread of Catholicism and Jesuit missions. 1699.

1699. DOPPELMAYR, Johann Gabriel. Visionis sensum nobilissimum ex obscuræ cameræ tenebris luculenter-illustrans dissertatio optico-physica, quam sub præsidio Joh. Christophori Sturmii ... defendet Joh. Gabriel Doppelmayr, etc. [Altdorf:] literis Henrici Meyeri, [1699]. Illustrated with 1 folded plate. 44 pages. Contemporary speckled paper spine. 4to. Extremely rare disputation written by the great astronomer Doppelmar under the auspices of Joh. Christian Sturm whilst still a student at the University of Altdorf. The work appears to have been largely overlooked (probably due to its extreme scarcity) by those writing on the history of the camera obscura and is as such also of the greatest significance for pre-history photography. The work discusses the development, construction and uses of the instrument and is one of the earliest publications devoted to the subject. Exceedingly rare with the engraved plate. Even age toning. PINEDO Francisco de
1699. Manuscript in ink. Bifolium with address panel. 3pp. Folio. Some pale stains not affecting legibility. Veracruz, 13th November, A fantastic survival, a contemporary report on Spanish action against what they perceived as pirates challenging their colonial hold in the Caribbean. Darien, in modern Colombia, was also the site of a curious attempt at colonization. William Paterson - founder of the Bank of England - was an architect of the Company of Scotland, an organisation intended to stimulate global trade by establishing a Scottish colonial outpost in the New World. This colony (?Caledonia?) with its capital (?New Edinburgh?) was established in 1698 on the Caribbean side of the Isthmus of Panama. The intention was that the location would act as an entrepôt facilitating Scottish trade to both Pacific and Atlantic routes, with an overland passage connecting the two. Needless to say the East India Company did what it could to quash the project from its outset, seeing it as a threat to their powerful trade alliances, particularly with Spain. They initially pursued the company in the courts, preventing any investment from outside of Scotland. As a result, the full £400,000 were raised by public subscription from the people of Scotland alone. The expedition was a failure, initially abandoned in October 1699. News did not reach Scotland in time to halt various relief vessels however, and a second wave of colonists arrived on 30th November. The whole venture was abandoned soon after and had a devastating effect on the Scottish economy. First and foremost the experiment failed … [Click Below for Full Description]

I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 1699 1ed Jeremey Collier Defense of Short View of English Theater Puritan Plays Jeremy Collier was a 17th-century English theater critic who, in 1698, wrote a highly controversial attack on English comedies. 'Short View of the Immorality and Profaneness of the English Stage' was filled with Collier's views on what he considered to be profanity and immorality in English plays. He believed plays should be providing moral encouragement, rather than encouraging unethical vices. Immediately after Collier's 'Short View' was released, playwrights quickly responded with their own attacks on Collier's views. Naturally, Collier published his own defense of his 'Short View' which focused heavily on the content William Congreve's plays. This 1699 first edition of 'Defense' is a fine printing of the literary war between Puritan restrictions and English dramatists! Item number: #8892 Price: $599 COLLIER, Jeremy A defence of the Short view of the profaneness and immorality of the English stage, being a reply to Mr. Congreve's Amendments, &c. and to the Vindication of the author of the relapse.
