Alessandro SPECCHI (Roma, 1668 - Roma, 1729)
The ""Nuovo Teatro"" was initiated in 1665 to depict the new Rome in a series of etchings. What it gave to future generations was a magnificent historical record of views etched by two of Italy's greatest architectural artists. The printing and publishing of these important etchings was entrusted to Giacomo de Rossi (1626 - 1691), the head of the most dominant Roman publishing house. (Sons and nephews of de Rossi, in fact, continued the publishing house until 1738 when the business was sold to Pope Clement XII to form the basis of the Regia Calcografia.) Altogether, four sets of ""Nuovo Teatro"" were created during the seventeenth century. Volumes one (35 etchings) and two (17 etchings) were both published in the year of 1665 and dealt mainly in views of the new piazzas, gardens, terraces and their surrounding buildings. Volume 3 (38 etchings … [Click Below for Full Description]

COLLECTIF]
A Ratisbonne, chez Matthias Kerner. [Bruxelles, Foppens], 1699. in-12, 3ff.n.ch.-1f. blanc-735pp.-3 planches. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Seven vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers (rather rubbed, some marginal worming in Vol. V & minor worming in Vol. VII), orig. block printed title label on each upper cover, new stitching. Osaka: Okada Saburoemon kanko, 1699.First edition of this very rare book on acupuncture and moxibustion, the taking of the pulse, and traditional Chinese medicine. This was one of the three most important works of clinical medicine of the Edo period. The text clearly describes taking the pulse of patients, both of adults and children. The nine tools used at that time for acupuncture are described and illustrated (several of them are still in use today). The present work is an elaboration of the influential work on moxa and acupuncture "Shinkyui bassui, by an unknown author or editor, published complete in five volumes in 1685. This treatise refers to an earlier Chinese work, unnamed, but probably meaning the Rei-su (or Ling-shu), traditionally ascribed to the famous Chinese physician-emperor, KO-TEI (or HWANG Ti). The detail available in Shinkyu bassui, especially regarding descriptions and instructions for use, is impressive - no less than 22 sections consider the following aspects of moxa and acupuncture: theory; relationship to the pulse; stomach; other internal organs; treatment (which was differentiated by sex); the 'philosophy' of acupuncture; cautions in the use of acupuncture and moxa; the preparation and use of moxa cones; how to remove needles (including a separate section on needles which are broken off in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

He was appointed secretary to the emperor Hadrian, a job that gave him access to the imperial records and archive. He made good use of his sources, writing the Lives of the XII Caesars, or De vita Caesarum. The collection consists of the biographies of 12 emperors, from Caesar, the founder of the imperial line, to Domitian. [DAVENANT, Charles]
London: Printed for James Knapton. 1699. 8vo, (16) + 312pp, 6 folding tables, with the very small ink stamp of the Nottingham Free Public Library on title-page (not touching printed surface, however), the stamp repeated discretely on blank versos of folding tables and on final leaf, recently bound by Trevor Lloyd in a fine 17th century style calf binding, spine gilt and lettered. A handsome copy. First edition. In this work Davenant endeavoured to correct what he regarded as the lamentable recklessness of his adversaries in the use of figures by extensive quotations from the estimates of Gregory King. It was through Davenant's Essay that these estimates (which were otherwise available only in mss.) became public and served as the basis for much 18th century statistical discussion. (J.F. Rees, Ency. of Social Sciences>). Davenant was one of the first students of the balance of trade in England. In this book concerned with the means to national prosperity he breaks away from the strict dogma of mercantilism by observing that the poor were unjustly oppressed by heavy customs and excise, which benefited only a limited commercial class. His remarks on the poor laws, the origin of the Whig and Tory parties, and on population (based partly on the works of William Petty) are of considerable interest.

Keith, George
London: Printed for the author, 1699. 16pp. Dbd. Very good. A rare work by noted Quaker dissenter George Keith, shortly before he abandoned Quakerism for the Anglican faith. Keith was a devout Quaker from 1663, and was imprisoned for several times because of his faith. He came to America in 1685, working as a surveyor in New Jersey. Beginning in 1689, with printer William Bradford, he wrote a series of books attacking New England Congregational ministers. However, by 1692, Keith turned his ire on fellow Quakers, and wrote a number of pamphlets attacking them. In 1693, after a trial, Keith went to New York, where he and Bradford produced the first book printed there, TRUTH ADVANCED IN THE CORRECTION OF MANY GROSS AND HURTFUL ERRORS (New York, 1694). He then went back to England. In the late 1690s, Keith wrote a few pamphlets, increasingly attacking all Quakers, but especially those in America. This pamphlet is the last Keith made before he became an Anglican, and it continues his vein. In 1702 he abandoned Quakerism, and he returned to America, where he spent the next two years. This is one of the rarer of Keith's works, with three institutions in the United States having copies: Folger, Earlham College, and John Carter Brown. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 699/116. WING S4408. Pritius, Johann Georg].
Leipzig, Friedrich Groschuff, 1699. 12mo. (20), 168 pp., including a folding genealogy of Mohammed as *10, bound here before *2. With a woodcut vignette of the Blue Mosque (?) on title-page as well as an engraved frontispiece of Mohammed presenting the Qur'an to the world, along with Zulfiqar (his legendary double-bladed sword), and a dove on his shoulder. Bound with (II): Orientalischer Kirchen-Staat. Gotha, Jakob Mevius, 1699. (2), 155, (1) pp. (and 2 other works). Contemp. vellum. Very rare sole edition of this detailed exposition of the Qur'an for German readers, replete with a frontispiece depicting Mohammed giving the 'Alcoran' to the world as well as a folding genealogy of the Prophet. The preface discusses the threat which Islam poses to the West; and yet Pritius remarks that "meanwhile no-one will be hurt by learning a little more precisely about the opinions of these people, against whom Christendom has so long struggled" (*2v). - Chapter I covers the tenets of Islamic faith, rituals, customs, and pilgrimage. This includes numerous excerpts from the Qur'an and a lengthy discussion of the entire process of the Hajj, as well as the rituals the pilgrims take part in once they arrive in Mecca (pp. 89-113). Chapter II concerns the role of "muftis, priests, monks, and hermits" in Islam; and Chapter III recounts the life and death of Mohammed, taken from the usual European sources. - The inner workings of Islam had long fascinated the German Protestants, who saw an ally in their struggle against the common enemy of the Habsburgs / Roman Catholic Church. The present work … [Click Below for Full Description]
