Tours : J. Barthe : H.M. Duval, 1699. 1st ed - 1699 1st ed Life of Saint Martin of Tours / Hungary Born Patron Saint of Soldiers Extremely Rare Bio / None Found for Sale Worldwide Martin of Tours (Latin: Sanctus Martinus Turonensis; 316 – November 8, 397) was a Bishop of Tours, whose shrine in France became a famous stopping-point for pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela. Around his name much legendary material accrued, and he has become one of the most familiar and recognizable Christian saints. As he was born in what is now Szombathely, Hungary, spent much of his childhood in Pavia, Italy, and lived most of his adult life in France, he is considered a spiritual bridge across Europe. His life was recorded by a contemporary, the hagiographer Sulpicius Severus. Some of the accounts of his travels may have been interpolated into his vita to validate early sites of his cult. He is a patron saint of soldiers. JUVENAL, & Persius.
London: for R. Clavel, J. Sprint, & J. Nicholson, 1699 - Octavo (195 x 120 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, spine richly gilt in compartments, brown morocco label, red sprinkled edges. Bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst, Lancashire retail chemist and bibliophile, to the front pastedown; contemporary ownership inscription, "Adam Otley 1702 Feb. 9th" to title. Spine gently rolled, tips lightly bumped, small superficial abrasion to front cover, front inner hinges superficially split but firm, variable pale browning to contents, a few trivial spots or marks. An excellent copy. Title page printed in red and black. An attractive copy of the second London edition of the Delphin Juvenal, in strictly contemporary panelled calf, strikingly well preserved. The Delphin series was begun in the 1670s ostensibly as a series of textbooks for Louis, le Grand Dauphin, heir to Louis XIV. The editor of the Delphin Juvenal was one Louis Desprez. It was originally published in 1684, and was first printed in London in 1691. It proved very popular and there were also several pirate editions.

MARIANA, Juan de.
London: Richard Sare, Francis Saunders and Thomas Bennet, 1699. Folio (348 x 215 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, expertly rebacked with the original spine laid down, red morocco label, raised bands, compartments gilt with attractive scrolled corner-tools enclosing a large floral lozenge. From the collection of British Arabist and colonial officer Col. S. B. Miles (1838-1914), with his widow's bequest plate to Bath Public Library to the front pastedown, and associated inked shelf-mark and blind-stamps as usual, together with an early 20th-century bookseller's ticket (Meehan of Bath) and the pencilled inscription "This book belonged to Professor Mitford". A little rubbed, some neat restoration to extremities, contents browned, a good copy. First edition in English, and still the only complete edition, of "the standard work on Spanish history up to the 18th century [which] does not merely report events in lucid chronological order and with admirable objectivity, but includes analyses of the mechanisms of princely power" (Braun, Juan de Mariana and Early Modern Spanish Political Thought, p. 2). First published in Latin at Toledo in 1592 as Historiae de rebus hispaniae, the text was updated by Mariana down to the death of Philip III in 1621. In 1601 Mariana first published his own Spanish translation of the work, from which this English translation was taken. The English work includes two supplements further extending the chronology of the narrative: one by H. Camargo y Salgado covering 1621-1649, and one by B. Varen de Soto covering 1650-1669. Juan de Mariana (1535?-1624), a n … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alessandro SPECCHI (Roma, 1668 - Roma, 1729)
The ""Nuovo Teatro"" was initiated in 1665 to depict the new Rome in a series of etchings. What it gave to future generations was a magnificent historical record of views etched by two of Italy's greatest architectural artists. The printing and publishing of these important etchings was entrusted to Giacomo de Rossi (1626-1691), the head of the most dominant Roman publishing house. (Sons and nephews of de Rossi, in fact, continued the publishing house until 1738 when the business was sold to Pope Clement XII to form the basis of the Regia Calcografia.) Altogether, four sets of ""Nuovo Teatro"" were created during the seventeenth century. Volumes one (35 etchings) and two (17 etchings) were both published in the year of 1665 and dealt mainly in views of the new piazzas, gardens, terraces and their surrounding buildings. Volume 3 (3 … [Click Below for Full Description]
