Tagli rossi, sguardie marmorizzate. Xilografie con sfere amillari ai frontespizi. Bruniture lievi. Piccoli restauri a cuffie e cerniere. Buon esemplare. NUC Pre-1956, vol.151, p. 380.

Stoke, Melis, Cornelius van ALKEMADE, editor]
[Leyden?], 1699. 35 engraved plates (one double page), some titled in contemporary hand. Folio (16-1/2 x 10-1/4 inches). Uncut, in contemporary marbled wrappers, binding split and perished, two leaves with minor marginal repair, plates clean. 35 engraved plates (one double page), some titled in contemporary hand. Folio (16-1/2 x 10-1/4 inches). French issue of the atlas volume of HOLLANDSCHE JAAR-BOEKEN OF RIJM-KRONIJK, the third edition (Leyden, 1699), and first illustrated, of Melis Stoke's (ca. 1235-1305) medieval chronicle. With 35 engravings after paintings in the Carmelite Monastery at Haarlem of medieval Dutch royalty, with the final plate a smiling Death. The Leyden 1699 edition is relatively common, while this issue with French title page and no imprint, is scarce. We locate only one institutional copy worldwide, at the New York Public, which, like the present copy, omits Stoke's text and contains only the 35 plates. The French title suggests that the plates were issued alone. Brunet V 547 , Lipperheide 939, Graesse VI, 502 (all for Leyden, 1699 edition); for this edition: Guigard IV, 3067 (citing the copy in "Catalogue des livres rare et curieux de Francisque Michel")

HECKEL, Catharina SPERLING.
Cf. Thieme & Becker XVI, pp. 208-209. A matching set of four lovely and delicate watercolour drawings, each depicting a young lady in a fancy German costume, drawn and painted on vellum by the Augsburg artist Catharina Sperling Heckel (1699-1741). She learned painting and drawing from her father, the Augsburg goldsmith Michael Heckel, engraving from Johann Ulrich Kraus, and married the engraver Hieronymus Sperling (1695-1777) in 1725. It is not clear whether she made these drawings shortly before or shortly after her marriage. She is best known for her ca. 1728 miniature portrait of Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie), the young pretender to the English throne. She never recovered from the birth of her first child in 1741, dying within a few weeks. Each drawing shows a young German lady wearing a long gown and a cap or bonnet, but one also carries a hat. The four drawings differ in the style of the gowns and other elements. In very good condition. With a few small chips in the paint of the frame. Lovely watercolour costume drawings of four young German ladies, perhaps from a court wedding in the free Imperial city of Augsburg.

Alessandro SPECCHI (Roma, 1668 - Roma, 1729)
The ""Nuovo Teatro"" was initiated in 1665 to depict the new Rome in a series of etchings. What it gave to future generations was a magnificent historical record of views etched by two of Italy's greatest architectural artists. The printing and publishing of these important etchings was entrusted to Giacomo de Rossi (1626-1691), the head of the most dominant Roman publishing house. (Sons and nephews of de Rossi, in fact, continued the publishing house until 1738 when the business was sold to Pope Clement XII to form the basis of the Regia Calcografia.) Altogether, four sets of ""Nuovo Teatro"" were created during the seventeenth century. Volumes one (35 etchings) and two (17 etchings) were both published in the year of 1665 and dealt mainly in views of the new piazzas, gardens, terraces and their surrounding buildings. Volume 3 (38 etchings) was pub … [Click Below for Full Description]

HECKEL, Catharina SPERLING.
