Contemp. panelled calf (worn at extremities, upper board detached). Lib. bookplate at ffep, armorial bookplate at front paste-down, lib. stamps verso frontis. and title, and at margin final leaf, else a good, clean copy.¦ First Edition, first three books only (of seven), with engraved frontispiece portrait by F. H. van Hove. Twelve engraved plates depict over 100 surgical instruments, along with other technical diagrams and apparatus. An old bookseller note at the paste-down advises: Òthe preface is an extraordinary diatribe and expose of degree-mongering, quacks and monopoliesÓ - practices and persons from which the author would surely wish to distance himself. From the library of George Francis Lovell, with his bookplate, and manuscript entry at the front endpaper. ¦ The polymath William Salmon (1644-1713) became Òone of the earliest and most successful writers on popular science and medicineÓ (Heirs of Hippocrates), producing translations and compendia in the areas of anatomy, surgery, pharmacology, botany, mathematics, astrology and alchemy. His fine library of over 3500 books was dispersed at his death in a series of sales by Thomas Ballard. Upon the testimony of the auction catalogue, Ferguson judged Salmon Òa man of erudition, and of wide and liberal tastes... [as well as] a thoroughgoing bibliophileÓ(Bibl. Chemica II, p.319). First published in 1670. "From pagination errors, quite likely a re-issue of the 1697 edition with a cancel title (and perhaps a cancel bifolium, of advertisements and title)." ESTC. Richard Lassels (also Lascelles) (c.1603–1668) was a Roman Catholic priest and travel writer. He was a tutor to several of the English nobility, and traveled through Italy five times. In this book, he asserts that any truly serious student of architecture, antiquity, and the arts must travel through France and Italy, and suggested that all "young lords" make what he referred to as the Grand Tour in order to understand the political, social, and economic realities of the world. The OED credits Lassels as coining the phrase "Grand Tour" in this work.
