Fryer, John
R.[obert] R.[oberts] for Ri[chard] Chiswell, London, 1698. x, xiii, 427, xxiv pp. Illus. with engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, 5 engraved plates (3 folding) and 3 maps, one with printed overslip; title in red and black, woodcut illustrations in text. "Fryer was a surgeon in the service of the East India Company for nine years and travelled extensively on the Coromandel and Malabar coasts. He describes well the cities of Surat and Bombay, the life and trade there as well as at Madras. Nearly sixteen years elapsed before he could be persuaded to publish the story of his wanderings. At length piqued at the frequent appearance of translations of foreign, especially French, books of travel, in which English industry and enterprise were decried, he issued a handsome folio," (Cox, 'Reference Guide To The Literature Of Travel, Vol I, p. 280). "As a surgeon in the service of the East India Company, he left England in December 1672 and arrived at Masulipatam in June 1673. He spent the following four years on the Coromandel and Malabar coasts, visiting and describing Surat, Bombay and Madras. He also travelled to Gokarna, Karwar, Goa, and ventured inland to Junnar. He was in Persia between 1677 and 1679, then returned to India until 1681. [his] account of the places he visited is accurate and reliable with numerous anecdotes told with a fine sense of humour'' (Howgego, 'Encyclopedia of Exploration to 1800', p.406). It is a "book rich in details of natural history and local medical practice," (DNB). Wing F2257. ESTC R23401. Cox I: p 280. Kress S.2042. Goldsmiths'-Kress 034 … [Click Below for Full Description]

BODENEHR, Johann Georg
Zug,: [Heinrich Ludwig Muoss], 1698 [?but 1770]. Description Engraved map with original hand colour, 52 engraved views of Swiss cities pasted to borders. NotesA fascinating item showing a patriotic view of Swiss heritage in the dying years of the Old Confederacy. Little is known of the mapmaker, Johann Georg Bodenehr (1631-1704), save that he was from a family of engravers and publishers working in Augsburg. The map itself bears an elaborate title cartouche with a wreath incorporating the arms of the cantons, supported by personifications of war and peace. The inscription underneath is taken from Luke 11:21: Cum fortis armatus custodit atrium suum, in pace sunt ea quae possidet, or When a strong man armed keepeth his hall, his goods are in peace. To the upper left is a table providing information on each canton, with a key below. To the right of the cartouche is a cameo of William Tell, the fourteenth century Swiss folk hero, with four scenes from his life. From left to right, the pictures show the famous incident in which he was challenged to shoot an apple off the head of his son with a crossbow by a despotic local ruler; his subsequent imprisonment and escape; his assassination of that ruler with the same crossbow; and finally, his acclaim by his countrymen. The large border surrounding the map contains 52 views of Swiss towns and villages. There are two depictions of climactic battles in the history of the Swiss Confederacy: the Battle of Morgarten in 1315, in which the Swiss defeated a larger and better organised Habsburg army; and the Battle of Sempach in 1386, which b … [Click Below for Full Description]

PRIDEAUX, Humphrey.
Amsterdam: George Gallet, 1698. Amsterdam: George Gallet,, 1698. Duodecimo (149 x 92 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, decorative gilt spine, red morocco label, red edges, marbled endpapers. Engraved additional frontispiece/title and 9 unsigned plates in the manner of Romeyn de Hooghe; title page printed in red and black. Head of spine chipped, front joint cracked but firm, corners worn. A good copy, clean and sound, complete with the terminal advertisement leaves [L3-4]. First French edition, translated from the English by Daniel de Larroque, following the London edition of 1697. "Prideaux [1648-1724] lamented how many Deists had charged Christianity with imposture, and he meant to hold up Islam as an actual fraud against which Christianity's legitimacy would become more apparent. Knowing that some might accuse him of painting Muhammad in the 'foulest colours,' he insisted that he would approach Muhammad judiciously. Prideaux saw Islam as the judgement of God on the eastern churches that had been rife with bickering before the Prophet arose... The rise of Islam, in Prideaux's formulation, was a cautionary tale against the disturbers of the church's peace" (Thomas S. Kidd, American Christians and Islam: Evangelical Culture and Muslims from the Colonial Period to the Age of Terrorism, Princeton UP 2009, pp. 7-8). Prideaux's book drew largely on the work of Edward Pococke (1604-1691), "the finest European Arabist of his time" (ODNB), and proved very popular, going through eight editions by 1723. Copac cites copies at just four British and Irish institutional libraries (BL, Oxf … [Click Below for Full Description]

[22], 243, [33], 228 pp. Two volumes in one, engraved frontispiece to volume one, 6 engraved folding plates, lacks the 2 maps. Bound in modern leather with raised bands, gilted leather spine label and new endpapers. THE FIRST DEPICTION OF NIAGARA FALLS Second English edition, considered typographically superior to the first, and first published in French in 1697. Two English editions were printed in 1698, this edition is has the first line of the printers on the title-page ending in "Tonson", and has alterations to the page numbers on the plates. An important but much decried account of Hennepin's travels in what is now the United States and Canada, including his probably fictitious description of his voyage down, and up, the Mississippi. One of the two plates is the first depiction of the Niagara Falls. Hennepin made two voyages to the New World, the first was on the same boat as the explorer René-Robert Cavalier de La Salle, arriving in Quebec in 1675. The following year he traveled to Fort Frontenac (now Kingston) on Lake Ontario and helped establish a mission there. In 1678 Hennepin was reassigned to Quebec and in November of that year accompanied La Salle on his exploration into the Great Lakes region. Hennepin accompanied Accault on an exploratory expedition of the Mississippi valley, and was taken prisoner by the Sioux. Rescued in 1681 by a small party of French explorers led by Daniel Greylsolon, sieur du Lhut, he returned to France and published an account of his adventures as … [Click Below for Full Description]

R P Louis Hennepin
Utrecht: Antoine Schouten, 1698. With three engraved plates and one folding map. Lacking one plate and one map as is quite common - may have been bound without it. Printed in original French. Louis Hennepin was a catholic priest and missionary of the Franciscan Recollect order and an explorer of the interior of North America. Hennepin was sent as a missionary to New France at the request of Louis XIV to accompany explorer Robert de la Salle, who was credited with claiming of the Mississippi river in the name of France. Hennepin was with La Salle at the construction of Fort Crevecouer when Le Salle sent Hennepin and two others as as an advance party to search for the Mississipi river. Hennepin was captured by the Sioux war party and abducted for a time. In these works Hennepin falsely calimed to have made a voyage of discovery along the lower Mississippi river before Le Salle's descent in 1682. Two great waterfalls were brought to the world's attention by Louis Hennepin, Niagara Falls and the Saint Anthony Falls, the only waterfall in the Mississippi River.
