On display is a unique example of a 1698 King James Old and New Testament Bible printed by Charles Bill, Printer to his Most Excellent Majesty. This is a rare one of kind Bible with a most unique leather pattern and styling reminiscent of exquisite high french cultural influence containing dentelle stamping around the inside of the covers and 24 karat gold page edging. In addition it has original matching marbled endpapers. Very rare. Very light foxing is present throughout and is an expected condition of age. The cover is a magnificent gloss ebony black leather with exquisite gold leaf on the covers both front and back as well as spine. The spine shows 6, 24 karat gold leaf bands as well as 5 floret imprinting between them. The front and back covers have gold edging around then and flor de lis figures on the 4 corners. Both boards and spine are firmly attached and the book is tight and put together very well. This is a beautiful example of a late 1600's Bible. It measures approximately 6 1/2" x 3 3/4" x 1 1/2" and weighs just under 1 pounds. It is of course used and does show the expected wear and tear associated with its age. This is an incredible opportunity to own a piece of history in the form of a Bible printed over 3 centuries ago. With the beautiful gloss black ebony coloring and gold leafing on the spine it makes for a spectacular display. It could be opened up to any of the Title pages or left closed to show the beautiful 300 year old original leather cover. A magnificent addition to any collection. CORONELLI VINCENZO MARIA - LEVANTO FRANCESCO MARIA
Incisione in rame, mm 405x510, margini molto ampi. [Click Below for Full Description]

Bound in modern leather with raised bands, gilted leather spine label and new endpapers. THE FIRST DEPICTION OF NIAGARA FALLS Second English edition, considered typographically superior to the first, and first published in French in 1697. Two English editions were printed in 1698, this edition is has the first line of the printers on the title-page ending in "Tonson", and has alterations to the page numbers on the plates. An important but much decried account of Hennepin's travels in what is now the United States and Canada, including his probably fictitious description of his voyage down, and up, the Mississippi. One of the two plates is the first depiction of the Niagara Falls. Hennepin made two voyages to the New World, the first was on the same boat as the explorer René-Robert Cavalier de La Salle, arriving in Quebec in 1675. The following year he traveled to Fort Frontenac (now Kingston) on Lake Ontario and helped establish a mission there. In 1678 Hennepin was reassigned to Quebec and in November of that year accompanied La Salle on his exploration into the Great Lakes region. Hennepin accompanied Accault on an exploratory expedition of the Mississippi valley, and was taken prisoner by the Sioux. Rescued in 1681 by a small party of French explorers led by Daniel Greylsolon, sieur du Lhut, he returned to France and published an account of his adventures as … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Raleigh, Sir Walter
London: Printed for Mat. Gillyflower, 1698. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [liv], 415, [1] + engraved frontispiece portrait. Errata leaf discarded. Stubs of cancels visible before H4, H7, P2, P7. Contemporary calf panelled in blind, printed waste used as pastedowns. Poor-quality paper browned and foxed, a few other marks. A little rubbed, edges a touch worn, rebacked with new black morocco label. The scarce first edition of this popular abridgment of Sir Walter Raleigh's important 'History', compiled while he was in the Tower of London. The compiler was the prolific Laurence Echard (1672-1730), translator of Roman comedy and author of several works of history which went through multiple editions. This one was reprinted twice within the next few years, the second edition adding Philip Raleigh's name to the title-page. It is perhaps oddly scarce in this edition: ESTC locates copies in half a dozen locations in the UK and a similar number outside, with another issue (variant imprint) in just four copies. ESTC R8185.

La Calprenède (Gaultier de Coste, seigneur de)]
Printed for Ralph Smith, 1698. title within double rules, occasional paper-flaws, rust or other small holes with the loss of the odd letter, minor ink, wax or other stains, a few leaves foxed, slightly browned in places, final advertisement leaf discarded, pp. [viii], 958, folio in 4s, near contemporary mottled calf, rebacked, corners worn, inscription on flyleaf recording the purchase of it on 3 Oct. 1699 for 18/6, a few emendations to the text in the same early hand, nineteenth-century book-plate of the Marquess of Headfort, good. The text has a convoluted publishing history. 'Having become proficient in French and Italian under the instruction of another member of the Clinton household, Loveday translated into English the first three parts of La Calprenède's Cléopâtre under the title Hymen's Præludia, or, Love's Master-Piece; these appeared respectively in 1652, 1654, and 1655, and were reprinted many times. Despite the erroneous attribution of other parts of the romance to Loveday's hand in some later editions, it was only with the collaboration of John Coles that part 4 was completed and published in 1656. Loveday [who died in 1656] was an agreeable writer, and his translation is accurate and idiomatic' (ODNB). Coles was responsible for parts 5-7, James Webb for part 8, and John Davies for parts 9-12. Individual parts, and incomplete collections were published until the first collected edition appeared in 1668, and there were several editions until the mid-eighteenth century. Halliwell, Richard]; [Blake, Hannah]
[Chester, Pennsylvania], August 16, 1698 and September 29, 1698. [1]p., contemporary docketing on verso. Vellum with seals and pendant seal. 10½ x 14¼ inches. Folds; some soiling; very good. Seventeenth-century Pennsylvania indenture conveying 250 acres of land on Chester Creek in Chester County originally deeded to Edward Blake by William Penn, Propriatary and Governor, in 1681. The 1698 indenture is between merchant Richard Halliwell of New Castle, Delaware and widow Hannah Blake of Philadelphia, co-executors of Edward Blake, on the one part, and Thomas Carthrite, yeoman of Ashton Township, Chester County, on the other part. The document notes the metes and bounds of the land, the date of its original conveyance from William Penn in 1681, and the Chester County Court's permission given to Halliwell and Blake, as executors, to sell the land. Later, in 1789, this land would be transferred to the jurisdiction of the newly-created Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The indenture was signed, sealed, and delivered by Halliwell and Blake on August 16, 1698; it was also signed by two witnesses, Ro. ffrench and John Cadwallader. At the bottom, an added inscription notes that the indenture was "[a]cknowledged in open court and certified under the clarks hand And County Seale the 13th Day of September Anno Dom[in]i 1698" by John Childe, Deputy Master of the Rolls. "Edward Blake was the leader of New Castle [Delaware] Friends [Quakers] during this period [early 1690s]. He was also prominent in civic affairs. [Economics and Politics] [Charles Davenant:]
London: Printed for James Knapton, at the Crown in St. Pauls Church-yard, 1698. Hardcover first edition - The second - and more interesting - part (complete in itself) of Davenant's monumental two-part work, both parts published in the same year. While Part I dealt primarily with "political arithmetick," Part II focuses on the somewhat more lively subject of foreign trade and consists of: "four Discourses... viz. (I.) That Foreign Trade is beneficial to England and (II.) On the protection and Care of Trade, (III.) On the Plantation Trade, (IV.) On the East-India Trade; to which is added the late Essay on the East-India Trade." (with a separate title page and pagination.) The last-mentioned, first published a year earlier, is Davenant's famous essay opposing the protection of English textiles from Indian competition. The essay "On the Plantation Trade" contains a great deal of material on America and the West Indies, the use of slaves and more. ...Index. 434, 64 pp. Good overall in original leather boards. Front board is detached and the leather binding is quite scuffed, but the contents are near fine - and this is a work deserving of restoration.
