Louis Hennepin
London: Printed for M. Bentley, J. Tonson, H. Bonwick, T. Goodwin, and S. Manship, 1698. [22], 243, [33], 228 pp. Two volumes in one, engraved frontispiece to volume one, 6 engraved folding plates, lacks the 2 maps. Bound in modern leather with raised bands, gilted leather spine label and new endpapers. THE FIRST DEPICTION OF NIAGARA FALLS Second English edition, considered typographically superior to the first, and first published in French in 1697. Two English editions were printed in 1698, this edition is has the first line of the printers on the title-page ending in "Tonson", and has alterations to the page numbers on the plates. An important but much decried account of Hennepin's travels in what is now the United States and Canada, including his probably fictitious description of his voyage down, and up, the Mississippi. One of the two plates is the first depiction of the Niagara Falls. Hennepin made two voyages to the New World, the first was on the same boat as the explorer René-Robert Cavalier de La Salle, arriving in Quebec in 1675. The following year he traveled to Fort Frontenac (now Kingston) on Lake Ontario and helped establish a mission there. In 1678 Hennepin was reassigned to Quebec and in November of that year accompanied La Salle on his exploration into the Great Lakes region. Hennepin accompanied Accault on an exploratory expedition of the Mississippi valley, and was taken prisoner by the Sioux. Rescued in 1681 by a small party of French explorers led by Daniel Greylsolon, sieur du Lhut, he returned to France and published an account of his adventures as … [Click Below for Full Description]

SIDNEY, Algernon.
London: printed, and are to be sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster, 1698. London: printed, and are to be sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster,, 1698. Published from an Original Manuscript of the Author. Folio (319 x 207 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, recent red morocco label to style. Bookseller's ticket and library plate to pastedown. Discreetly refurbished, with repairs to spine ends, joints, and extremities. Title page lightly foxed and chipped at corners, occasional light spotting and the odd stain. A very good copy. First edition of this major text of republican theory written between 1681 and 1683 and originally circulated as a manuscript. "Although long and sometimes repetitive the Discourses places Sidney alongside Milton as the master of republican eloquence. It is the power of its prose, as much as any aspect of its content, which helps to account for the work's exceptional subsequent impact in Britain, continental Europe, and America. Polemically a refutation of Sir Robert Filmer's Patriarcha (1680), the practical purpose of the Discourses is again to argue for armed resistance to oppression... for subsequent influence in Enlightenment Britain, America, the United Provinces, Germany, and France, he had no seventeenth-century rival except John Locke" (ODNB). "Sidney was executed in 1683 for complicity in the Rye House Plot, his papers, including the [unpublished] Discourses, being used against him. The indictment cited sentences saying that the king is subject to law, is responsible to the people, and may be deposed, as a 'false, sed … [Click Below for Full Description]

[FLOYER, JOHN]
London: Richard Wilkins at the King's Head, 1698. FIRST EDITION. A long dedication to Dr. Phineas Fowke is followed by two sections "to the reader," the second of which details the "several species of the asthmas." Contemporary calf, rebacked (in 1939), spine label; minor spotting, otherwise a very nice copy. From the library of Burnes Floyer of Lichfield, a descendant of the author, with his signature on the first blank, and the bookplates of Hyman Miller M.D. and Kenneth Garth Huston Jr. First edition of the first clear description of bronchial asthma. It is the first major monograph on the subject in English. Floyer clearly defines asthma, separating it from other pulmonary disorders. In this work, he discusses the influence of heredity in asthma and includes an early description of emphysema. According to Sakula's article on Floyer's book published in Thorax (Vol. 39, no. 4, 1984), "he [Floyer] considered that the cause of the dyspnoea was bronchial constriction due to spasm, and he regarded the spasm to be tonic, more akin to catalepsy than to the clonic convulsion of epilepsy." Floyer (1649-1734), an eminent physician at Lichfield, is noted for his many contributions to medicine. One of the most eccentric physicians of his time, his works show great independence of thought as well as a true spirit of research. Floyer suffered from asthma for many years and often made himself a subject for investigation during his research into asthma.

Edition ornée de gravures : 1 frontispice, 4 vignettes in-t. Onements typographiques. [Click Below for Full Description]

HENNEPIN, .L.
London. Printed for M. Bentley, J. Tonson, H. Bonwick, T. Goodwin, and S. Manship. 1698.. Hardcover. 8vo (8's), 18.5cm, 299,355pp., with 1 (of 2) frontispiece, 6 folding plates, 1 (of 2) folding maps (missing map supplied in facsimile), rebound in quarter tan calf, raised bands, gilt title on brown crushed morocco label, in matching slipcase with calf foredges and marbled edges, in fine condition. (cgc) This work forms one of the most important volumes in the early history of North America. Lande 423, CF Dionne II 249, TPL 85. Following the discovery of the Mississippi by Marquei and Joliet, La Salle set out in 1678 to open up this fertile basin. The chronicler of his expedition was Father Louis Hennepin, who explored the upper reaches of the Mississippi while La Salle was retracing his way to raise funds for renewing his voyage, after its disastrous experience on the Illinois River. Hennepin may have touched the site of the future city of Minneapolis. His work forms one of the most important volumes in the early history of North America. He lived for eleven years on this continent and penetrated farther into the then unknown interior than anyone before him. He was the discoverer and explorer of the upper reaches of the Mississippi and the first to describe Niagara Falls, exaggerating their height, however to above 600 feet. He tells of the building of the new Fort Crevecoeur which was named by the Indians Checagou (Chicago), describes Fort Frontenac and the Great Lakes, recounts the travels and death of La Salle and the Capture of Quebec by the Englis … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bulifon Antonio
presso Antonio Bulifon, 1698. 12mo (cm. 14,8), 6 cc.nn., 373(1) pp., 5 cc.nn.

On display is a unique example of a 1698 King James Old and New Testament Bible printed by Charles Bill, Printer to his Most Excellent Majesty. This is a rare one of kind Bible with a most unique leather pattern and styling reminiscent of exquisite high french cultural influence containing dentelle stamping around the inside of the covers and 24 karat gold page edging. In addition it has original matching marbled endpapers. Very rare. Very light foxing is present throughout and is an expected condition of age. The cover is a magnificent gloss ebony black leather with exquisite gold leaf on the covers both front and back as well as spine. The spine shows 6, 24 karat gold leaf bands as well as 5 floret imprinting between them. The front and back covers have gold edging around then and flor de lis figures on the 4 corners. Both boards and spine are firmly attached and the book is tight and put together very well. This is a beautiful example of a late 1600's Bible. It measures approximately 6 1/2" x 3 3/4" x 1 1/2" and weighs just under 1 pounds. It is of course used and does show the expected wear and tear associated with its age. This is an incredible opportunity to own a piece of history in the form of a Bible printed over 3 centuries ago. With the beautiful gloss black ebony coloring and gold leafing on the spine it makes for a spectacular display. It could be opened up to any of the Title pages or left closed to show the beautiful 300 year old original leather cover. A magnificent addition to any collection. Utrecht: Antoine Schouten, 1698. With three engraved plates and one folding map. Lacking one plate and one map as is quite common - may have been bound without it. Printed in original French. Louis Hennepin was a catholic priest and missionary of the Franciscan Recollect order and an explorer of the interior of North America. Hennepin was with La Salle at the construction of Fort Crevecouer when Le Salle sent Hennepin and two others as as an advance party to search for the Mississipi river. Hennepin was captured by the Sioux war party and abducted for a time. In these works Hennepin falsely calimed to have made a voyage of discovery along the lower Mississippi river before Le Salle's descent in 1682.
