MUN, Thomas.
First edition under this title, the third overall, of "the bible of later mercantilists" (PMM), first published as England's Treasure by Forraign Trade in 1664, though originally written in the 1620s. Retrospectively recognised as one of the key economic writers of the Stuart age, Mun's work was not published until some 23 years after his death, at a propitious moment on the eve of the second Dutch war, perhaps the clearest case in English history of a purely commercial war. Mun thought that the best way to increase the wealth of the nation was by foreign trade, "wherein wee must ever observe this rule; to sell more to strangers yearly than wee consume of theirs in value", thereby obtaining a favourable balance of trade. "The mercantilist programme in this book clearly symbolized the marriage of economics and national policy in the seventeenth century" (op. cit.) "Although the significance of the balance of trade had been aired by earlier writers, Mun's assertion of its importance profoundly influenced English economic thought for the ensuing 150 years" (ODNB).

Bruxelles: E.H. Fricx, 1698. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Nicolas Fontaine was a relatively unknown French theologian from the 17th-century. He closely associated himself with Lemaistre de Sacy and was subsequently arrested for heresy as a Jansenist with de Sacy. Fontaine wrote several important works, including a history of the Bible; however, this work has often been attributed to de Sacy because of the closeness the two shared. Because the work was published under the name 'Royaumont's Bible', the attribution was not always clear. This book features over 250 impressive copper engravings of famous Bible scenes - an incredible collection of illustrations!

Amsterdam: Henri Desbordes, & Antoine Schelte, 1698. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. The history of China has always been one of the most popular discussions of western culture and was a regular occurring topic of authors from the 16th- 18th-centuries. One of the most important examples of Chinese history was written by Louis Le Comte, a French Jesuit who wrote this work on his mission to China in 1688. This work, 'Nouveau Memoires,' created a huge debate within the Chinese Rites Controversy. These tomes cover various Chinese empires and kingdoms including the K'ang His and Kangxi, Chinese astrology and star gazing, Zodiac and mythology, Chinese boats, Mandarin costumes, mechanical inventions, and establishment of Christianity in China. While these contents are important, the most desirable aspect of this book is the section devoted to Confucius and his teaching, along with a rare portrait of Confucius. A highly desirable work with fascinating contents that includes full-page and folding engravings! This valuable set is made even more desirable by the inclusion of a prestigious provenance. This example includes the book plate of Alexander Hamilton - one of the most important founding fathers of the United States of America. According to several sources, this book plate matches other works that were known to be in the library of Hamilton. [See below].

"From the enslaved populace, songs, Chants and demands While princes and lords are held captive in prisons. These will in the future by headless idiots Be received as divine prayers." - Nostradamus, prediction of the French Revolution Nostradamus, considered, perhaps, the most famous prophetical seer, has been credited with prophesying important and impactful world events such as the French Revolution, Great London Fire, and reigns of Napoleon and Hitler. Nostradamus claimed that the basis for his "Prophecies" was founded in his judgment of astrology. He was heavily criticized by astrologers for being 'incompetent,' as no one could truly predict the future. This rare 1698 Lyon edition features a fine, woodcut engraving on the title page and includes over 300 Nostradamus prophecies and visions.

London ?, 1698. Single sheet, folio, drop head title, printed one side, verso docketed, as issued, has been folded. In 1698 a controversy arose over the question of whether the four doctors of the Royal College of Physicians should be charged under the Act 25 Car II for being unqualified to act as Censors of the College. The four reasons given in this anonymous broadsheet are clearly in support of them not being excused from the charge. The subject caused a huge controversy at the time resulting in a pamphlet war over the difference between qualified and unqualified. The docket title reads "Reasons for excluding the Four Censors of the College of Physicians". Not in Wing, nor in ESTC on line.

HARRIS, John
London: J.L. for Richard Wilkin, 1698. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. John Harris was a 17th-century English Puritan writer and priest who was notable for his sermons and lectures in the famous Boyle Lectures. The Boyle Lectures, named after philosopher Robert Boyle, were given by various preachers and philosophers that discussed the relationships between Christianity and Science. Boyle wanted to prove the truths of Christianity and disprove many of the beliefs of atheists, Jews, and Muslims. Harris's 'Atheistical Objections' was given in 1698 as a part of the seventh series in the Boyle Lectures. This sermon was given to directly prove the existence of God and show the flaws of atheistic views. [Attributes: First Edition]

[22], 243, [33], 228 pp. Two volumes in one, engraved frontispiece to volume one, 6 engraved folding plates, lacks the 2 maps. Bound in modern leather with raised bands, gilted leather spine label and new endpapers. THE FIRST DEPICTION OF NIAGARA FALLS Second English edition, considered typographically superior to the first, and first published in French in 1697. Two English editions were printed in 1698, this edition is has the first line of the printers on the title-page ending in "Tonson", and has alterations to the page numbers on the plates. An important but much decried account of Hennepin's travels in what is now the United States and Canada, including his probably fictitious description of his voyage down, and up, the Mississippi. One of the two plates is the first depiction of the Niagara Falls. Hennepin made two voyages to the New World, the first was on the same boat as the explorer René-Robert Cavalier de La Salle, arriving in Quebec in 1675. The following year he traveled to Fort Frontenac (now Kingston) on Lake Ontario and helped establish a mission there. In 1678 Hennepin was reassigned to Quebec and in November of that year accompanied La Salle on his exploration into the Great Lakes region. Hennepin accompanied Accault on an exploratory expedition of the Mississippi valley, and was taken prisoner by the Sioux. Rescued in 1681 by a small party of French explorers led by Daniel Greylsolon, sieur du Lhut, he returned to France and published an account of his adventures as … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
