Poetical miscellany
London 1698 - [Poems on Affairs of State.] Poems on affairs of state: from Oliver Cromwell, to this poresent time. Written by the greatest wits of the age, viuz. Lord Rochester, Lord D----t, Lord C---ts, Duke of Buckingham, Dr. K., Dr. Wild, Sir Charles S--dley, Sir Fleetwood S-----d, Mr. Dryden, Mr. Prior, Charles Blount, Esq., Mr. Wicherley, Mr. Shadwell, Mr. Tho. Brown, Capt. Ayloffe, Mr. H--- bt. Part III. With other miscellany poems; and a new session of the present poets. The whole never before printed. London: printed in the year 1698. (14), 312 pp. 8vo, rcent calf, stamped in blind, red morocco label. First edition. A spurious continuation of Poems on the Affairs of State, the first volume of which had appeared the year before. "This is an important volume, though it was probably not put out by those responsible for the other 8vo editions of P. O. A. S. The paper is of very poor quality, and the volume has the appearance of being a cheap and unauthorized publication. It is uncommon." -- Macdonald. A few of the poems were in fact included in the second genuine part of Poems on Affairs of State, published in 1703. The main text of this volume is, as Macdonald observes, rather foxed, but the preliminaries were printed on better paper. Otherwise a very good copy, from the collectiuon of George Thorn-Drury, with a few of his notes on the front pastedown. Wing P2722; Case 215; CBEL II, 340. [Attributes: First Edition]

London: S. Kemble, et.al., 1698. 288 pages. Octavo (7 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches); contemporary calf; neatly rebacked in matching calf. Third edition, printed the same year as the first. "Collier found the English dramatic world in a vulnerable state, where the success of a play depended upon some extent on its grossness and indecency. The publication of this book marks a new era in English dramatic literature. Few literary protests have been so completely successful in altering, or at least giving expression to an impending change in public taste. The works of such contemporaries as Dryden, Congreve and Vanbrough are discussed here in detail." - XIMENES 64:109.With the signature "Wm. S.W.
Lätt sprucken i innerfalsarna. Spridda småfläckar och enstaka diskreta understrykningar i rödkrita. Bra ex. Collijn Sveriges bibliografi 1600-talet 394.

His preoccupation with Dutch expansionism naturally leads him into a detailed examination of the commercial battles between Britain, Holland and America as well as the East Indies. Here he argues that a high rate of interest hinders the growth of trade and discourages navigation, industry, arts and invention. Bonnier De la Mousson Laissa de magnifisues collections tant de livres que de curiosités de toutes sortes ---- Troisième édition ---- "In this small posthumous volume, Pascal correlated hydrostatics and aerostatics by simple demonstrable relationships and banished the myth that nature abbors a vacuum . Using the recently invented Torricellian barometer, Pascal had his brother-in-law climb the Puy de Dome in 1648 and watch the barometer level fall with the ascent, thereby demonstrating that air had weight, like, he stated, a blanket of wool 20 or 30 fathoms high. The relationship of barometric change and change in the weather was first outlined here. In fluid mechanics Pascal enunciated his law that pressure applied to a confined fluid is transmitted equally thru the fluid in all directions and that it acts upon the confining surfaces at right angles and with equal pressures in equal areas".
