This revised constitution and rule was finally published after much discussion and compromise as made explicit on the title-page: "dispuestas por especial compromissa, de el discretorio de el capitulo provincial celebrado en el Convento de S. Diego de Mexico en I. de Diziembre de 1696: y aprobadas por su difinitorio en 23. de Iunio de 1697: y ultimamente revistas, y firmadas en 24. de Octubre de dicho año por los mismos compromissarios, y definitorio, que las saca à luz con las constituciones apostolicas pertenecientes á la ereccion de dicha provincia, mejor govierno, gracias, indultos, privilegios, y prerrogativas de la Franciscana Descalcez, y su Precedencia seraphica respecto de la chervbica familia de N. P. S. Avgvstín, y demas religiones sagradas sus immediatas." Despite the rather dry legal-administrative language there, we learn much from this about => life among the Mexican Franciscans: 1) that they are prohibited to attend bull fights and to play at cards and dice, 2) how they are to address each other, 3) when they may be put to torture in investigations, 4) their penalties for simony, 5) who they may allow to be buried in their churches, 6) how they are to conduct relations with women, and so on as to many, many more aspects of daily life. Gillberg, Jacob (1724-1793)
Fysiognomisk studie. Teckning i svart krita med förhöjningar i vitt. Signerad »J. Gillberg delineavit». 40?×?32,5 cm. Inramad. I sin bok beskriver Le Brun hur denna känsla uttrycks (här i John Williams' engelska översättning från 1734): »When Anger seizes the soul, it is expressed by red and fiery eyes; the pupil wild and flashing, the eyebrows alike, either lifted up or depress'd; the forehead very frowning, with wrinkles between the eyes; the nostrils open and extended; the lips pressing together, the under one rising above the upper, leaving the corners of the mouth somewhat open, and forming a cruel and disdainful smile» (1).. (1) Charles Le Brun, A method to learn to design the passions, proposed in a conference on their general and particular expression, London 1734, s. 45. [Click Below for Full Description]

LAMBERT, Johann Heinrich.
A fine copy, in contemporary German blind-tooled calf, of this rarity in which Lambert laid the foundation for the exact measurement of light (PMM 205; Grolier/Horblit 62; Norman 1269). <br/><br/> Lambert's discoveries "are of fundamental importance in astronomy, photography and visual research generally ... Both Kepler and Huygens had investigated the intensity of light, and the first photometer had been constructed by Pierre Bouguer (1698-1758); but the foundation of the science of photometry - the exact scientific measurement of light - was laid by Lambert's 'Photometry' ... In the <i>Photometria</i> he described his photometer and propounded the law of the absorption of light named after him. He investigated the principles and properties of light, of light passing through transparent media, light reflected from opaque surfaces, physiological optics, the scattering of light passing through transparent media, the comparative luminosity of the heavenly bodies and the relative intensities of coloured lights and shadows" (Printing and the Mind of Man). Provenance: Verso of title page with unidentified monogram stamp 'VF' surrounded by laurel wreath, repeated on final page and last plate. Goldsmith 3486; Kress 2070; Wing C3862. A classic work first appearing in 1668 under a different title and as a thin pamphlet (reprinted in 1689); this was enormously expanded for the 1690 edition which was reprinted in 1693 (and at that time retitled for the first time as here) and 1694. Child was one of the most influential English mercantilist authors of the seventeenth century. His preoccupation with Dutch expansionism naturally leads him into a detailed examination of the commercial battles between Britain and Holland and America and the East Indies. Here he argues that a high rate of interest hinders the growth of trade and discourages navigation, industry, arts, and invention. He urges the abolition of technical regulation of the cloth industry, and is concerned with strengthening the competitive power of English merchants. Poems on Affairs of State,
1698 Octavo, 7.4 x 4.6 inches. First edition. A-B8, C4, D-X8. This copy is bound in seventeenth-century calf, tooled in blind. The front joint is starting to crack. This collection of poems, contains two poems by Aphra Behn, "Bajazet to Gloriana" and "Desire, A Pindaric." It also gathers together the satirical writings important works by John Wilmot Earl of Rochester, "The History of Insipids," "Rochester's Farewell," and "On King Charles." Other key literary and political figures from the turbulent period of the English Civil War and protectorate are represented as well. "A number of these tracts were too scurrilous to see the light of day during the time; as it was, scandals erupted and party allegiances shifted frequently enough that more than one of these writers found themselves on the wrong side of the political fence. Milton, for example, was narrowly rescued by Andrew Marvell from probable execution when Milton's virulent anti-royalist opinions erupted at the end of Charles I's reign; Dryden more skillfully negotiated the shifting political tide. This collection is interesting both for this wealth of primary historical comment, as well as for its literary merit-although that merit is often found to be exaggerated; despite the genre's lofty intent, these works at times devolved from satire into invective. "At such times of crisis as the Dutch wars, the Popish Plot, or the bringing in of the Exclusion Bill, the normal stream of satirical verse became a flood. Most of this verse was anonymous, but some of it … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gonzalez de Quiroga, Diego
Madrid. Oficina de la viuda de Melchor Alvarez. In 8vo (200 mm x 152 mm). 12 ff. + 507 + 12 ff. & portrait of Carabantes (surrounded by natives). Contemporary limp vellum, remnants of ties, spine lettered in ink, slightly soiled, else fine, a most attractive binding. Worm holes to several leaves at the beginning, some affecting a little text, a few foxing spots and damp staining, else a remarkably fresh and clean copy.- First edition. Carabantes (1628 - 1694) was one of the first Capuchin missionaries in America; although his name was Velazquez, he changed his name for that of his hometown in 1645, when entering the order. In 1657, he arrived in the Island of Margarita (Venezuela), from there he went on to Caracas and Cumana, where he was able to evangelize the Caribes, a tribe notorious for its cruelty and ferocity. As often, the missionary learned the natives tongue and wrote subsequently a vocabulary for the missionaries. His stay in the region lasted for 9 years, after which he had to travel back to Spain to defend his fellow missionaries; after that, he planned to return to the Americas, but his superiors decided to keep him in Spain, where death found him short after. It is attributed to him the conversion of five "caciques" (denomination for the chiefs of the tribes). It is with little doubt one of the few, and more primitive, sources of information extant on several Provinces of Venezuela and local tribes amongst them, the Caribes, Cuacas, Tapies, etc. A copy of the "Copia de Carta escrita al Excelentissimo Señor Marques de Aytona" published in 1666 and written … [Click Below for Full Description]

Foy-Vaillant, Jean; [Michael Richey]
Paris: Andreae Cramoisy, 1698. A confidant of Louis XVI, Jean Foy-Vaillant (1632-1706) was the greatest numismatist of his day. Trained as a doctor, he abandoned medicine to focus his considerabile energies on the much more rewarding pursuit of Roman coinage. This is his fifth work on the subject, and like its predecessors is profusely illustrated. This copy bears the ownership signature of Michael Richey, dated 1733, at the base of the title page. Richey (1678-1761), a professor of history and Greek at the Hamburg Gymnasium and a prolific writer; he collaborated with his friend and neighbor Georg Philipp Telemann to produce some of the earliest German lieder. A former library copy, with a label to the front pastedown, a perforated blindstamp to the titlte page, and numerals inked on white on the spine, the book is in sound condition with some wear to the covers and an old repair to the head of the spine. Dekesel F-64. A very nice copy of a splendid book with a wonderful provenance. [Attributes: First Edition]

TOURNEFORT (Joseph PITTON De)
P., Imprimerie Royale, 1698 - EDITION ORIGINALE ---- BEL EXEMPLAIRE ---- P., Imprimerie Royale, 1698, un volume in 12 relié en plein veau, dos orné de fers dorés, tranches jaspées (reliure de l'époque), (petit accroc à la coiffe inférieure), 28 feuillets non chiffrés, 543pp., (1pp.), 9 feuillets non chiffrés ---- "In 1683, at the recommendation of Madame de Venelle, TOURNEFORT was chosen as substitute for Guy Fagon, professor at the Jardin du Roi in Paris. His new post required him not only to teach botany but also to enrich the holdings of live plants in the garden. He was ONE OF EUROPE'S MOST NOTED BOTANIST and had dozens of correspondents. What botany owes to TOURNEFORT is not the inventon of the iotaxonomic genus, but rather the creation of the concept of the genus in the modern sense and its first skillful application. TOURNEFORT's conception of genus contains a fundamental new contribution that was elaborated in the work of Linnaeus, Bernard de Jussieu and Adanson. On the level of principles, TOURNEFORT contributed powerfully and brilliantly to the establishment of objectivity in taxonomy and of research methods suitable for a natural method of classification. He payed a decisive role in the emancipation of botany from medicine.". (DSB XIII pp. 442/444) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Despite the erroneous attribution of other parts of the romance to Loveday’s hand in some later editions, it was only with the collaboration of John Coles that part 4 was completed and published in 1656.
