BOUVET, Joachim
Paris: Robert Pepie, "1698" but printed in, 1697. Duodecimo, small old library stamp on title; in very good condition in the original vellum binding, neatly lettered on spine. The Kangxi Emperor described for Louis XIV. First edition, revised issue (details below). Bouvet's important description of the Kangxi Emperor and his court was written for Louis XIV of France, who had sent Bouvet and his Jesuit colleagues to China; Bouvet set out to encourage the king's further support of the mission in China. Widely read at a time when information about China was markedly exotic and hard to obtain, Bouvet's memoir quickly appeared in Latin, Dutch, English and Italian versions. It is seen as an interesting description of the Qing court, and a Chinese translation has been published in modern times ({i Kangxi huangdi}, 1981). Bouvet gives a through description of the powerful Kangxi Emperor at the height of his powers, with detailed personal impressions of the emperor himself, to whom Bouvet became quite close, and very good descriptions of the Imperial Court. The great consolidator of the Qing dynasty, Kangxi was a reformer and moderniser while still encouraging Confucian learning and traditional values. He welcomed the six Jesuits sent by the French king as missionaries to China in 1685; Joachim Bouvet (1656-1730) was one of these scientifically-inclined missionaries who were commissioned to carry on astronomical observations, to determine the geographical positions of the various places they were to visit, and to collect various scientific data. Bouvet stayed at Peking, … [Click Below for Full Description]
