SIDNEY, Algernon
London: Printed, and are to be sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster,, 1698. Published from an original manuscript of the author. Folio (315 × 205 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, blindstamp rule border to covers, neatly rejointed, new contrasting spine label. Joints and spine ends neatly restored, new red morocco label. Front free endpaper with neat tape repair. A few leaves browned; an excellent copy. First edition of this major text of republican theory written between 1681 and 1683 and originally circulated as a manuscript. "Although long and sometimes repetitive the Discourses places Sidney alongside Milton as the master of republican eloquence. It is the power of its prose, as much as any aspect of its content, which helps to account for the work's exceptional subsequent impact in Britain, continental Europe, and America. Polemically a refutation of Sir Robert Filmer's Patriarcha (1680), the practical purpose of the Discourses is again to argue for armed resistance to oppression ... for subsequent influence in Enlightenment Britain, America, the United Provinces, Germany, and France he had no seventeenth-century rival except John Locke" (ODNB). "Sidney was executed in 1683 for complicity in the Rye House Plot, his papers, including the [unpublished] Discourses, being used against him. The indictment cited sentences saying that the king is subject to law, is responsible to the people, and may be deposed, as a 'false, seditious, and traitorous libel'… Sidney's Discourses Concerning Government was not published until 1698" (Sabine, 512). Thomas Jefferson was … [Click Below for Full Description]

Maupertuis, Pierre Louis Moreau de
1698. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST VERBAL FORMULATION OF THE PRINCIPLE OF LEAST ACTION, also known as the Maupertuis Principle. French mathematician Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis (1698-1759) was the first to propose the principle of least action for light, as the result that minimizes the integral of the speed over the path taken. Maupertuis felt confident in this proposal because he found that it produces the same result as Snell's law (the ratios of the sines of the angle of incidence and refraction are the same as the ratio of the speeds of light in the material). Maupertuis first stated his proposal in a presentation to the French Academy of Sciences titled "Accord de différentes loix de la nature qui avoient jusqu'ici paru incompatibles" or "Accord between different laws of Nature that seemed incompatible" (Mémoires de l'Académie Royale des Sciences Année 1744 pp. 417-426, 1748). In his paper, Maupertuis proposed a general idea that is even more important than the specifics of the principle: "Nature, in making its effects, always acts by the simplest means possible." Maupertuis had previously presented a paper to the Paris Academy of Sciences titled "La Loi du repos des corps" or "Law of Bodies at Rest" (which we also offer) (Mémoires de l'Académie Royale des Sciences Année 1740 pp. 170-176, 1742), in which he proposed the conditions required for a system of bodies to remain at rest: "If there is one constant force on all the masses, and its center is at an infinite distance from the system, the center of gravity of the system must be as far as possible from, or as n … [Click Below for Full Description]

COLLAGE ENGRAVING
[Orval, Belgium?, before 1698, possibly 1666]. Sheet size 182 x 152 mm., matted, glazed and framed. The unsigned engraving with contemporary or near-contemporary hand-coloring, the background of the upper portion of the engraving carefully cut out and replaced by a plain paper ground (a crown with feather from the original engraving cut out separately and mounted at upper left), the border colored yellow, gold- and silver-embroidered silk fabric raiments applied to the figures of the saint and the soldiers, each garment outlined and highlighted in black thread or ribbon. Some abrasions affecting the flesh areas of the image apparently due to a volatile or acidic coloring material, a few worm[?]holes in lower portion.*** The print shows St. Menas, the Egyptian saint, leaning against a tree, serene in his martrydrom, a soldier to his right raising a scourge to flog him, while two other soldiers apply further ghastly torture to the Saint using fire and a double prong. On a stone tablet in the lower left foreground is an engraved dedication (wormed and partly illegible) to Henri de Meugen, Abbot of the Benedictines of Orval, Belgium, from 1639 until his death in 1698. The numbers 66 appear at the end of the inscription, possibly the date [16]66. The unsigned engraving was almost certainly produced before the Abbot?'s death in 1698. The collage with its embroidered decoration, in which silk threads in white and blue are woven into the gold-threaded armor of the soldiers, while the Saint?'s loincloth is silver, may have been created somewhat later, in the 18th century. St Menas … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cowper, William
Sam. Smith and Benj. Walford, Oxford. Baroque Anatomy Cowper, William (1666-1709). The anatomy of humane bodies. . . . Folio. [72]ff. including mezzotint portrait by Smith after Closterman, allegorical engraved title attributed to Abraham Bloteling (1640-90) with pasted-on English title in cartouche as usual, second engraved title with vignette by Sturt. 114 plates (2 folding), 105 designed by Gérard de Lairesse [1640-1711] & probably engraved by Bloteling, 9 mostly drawn & engraved by M. van der Gucht. London: Sam. Smith & Benj. Walford, 1698 [printed at the Sheldonian Theater, Oxford]. Portrait, which is often missing, trimmed & mounted as always. First few leaves frayed, portrait soiled and with tears repaired, folding plates partially backed in paper to repair tears, tears in a few other plates, light foxing & spotting as in virtually all copies due to mineral deposits in the paper. Good to very good copy. First Edition in English of the original plates designed for Govard Bidloo by Gérard de Lairesse, a painter who rivaled Rembrandt in popularity in his time. G-M 385 cites the original issue of the plates with Latin text by Bidloo in 1685. Bidloo's text, however, was widely criticized, and because of this Cowper arranged to supply an entirely new text in English to accompany a reissue of the original engravings. This reissue was limited to 300 copies. The new English text was clearly superior, and the basis for later Latin editions. Cowper, however, did not acknowledge Bidloo, even going so far as to paste over Bidloo's name with his own in the cartouche on the engrave … [Click Below for Full Description]

Massialot François
Paris: Charles de Sercy, 1698. Third Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Full contemporary acid calf rebacked early on with the old spine laid down. Worn at the corners, spine a bit dry, hinges rubbed. Modest age toning internally, repair to one corner of one of the plates, otherwise quite clean. Froger, Francois
Paris: dans l'Isle du Palais et G. Saugrain, 1698. First edition.. Endpapers show a little marginal browning, light wear and a few age cracks to spine, the contents are very bright and clean; a tight copy in very good condition in an attractive contemporary binding.. Pp. (12), 219, (1); additional engraved title page, 29 engraved maps and plates, 9 of which are folding. Contemporary speckled calf leather, spine with 5 raised bands, red morocco title label in one compartment lettered in gilt, the five remaining compartments with elaborate gilt decorations, sm 8vo (184 x 105 mm). This is the rare first edition of an expedition undertaken in 1695-1697 to found a French settlement in the Straits of Magellen - that project ultimately failed. The expedition additionally visited the coast of Africa, Brazil and French Guiana (Cox II, p. 264). This account of the expedition is especially noteworthy for details of natural history subjects and for the accuracy of Froger's charts. Froger went on this voyage at the age of eighteen (Hill Collection, 2004, no. 656). The work contains one of the earliest maps of the port of Rio de Janeiro. See also Sabin 26001. Armorial bookplate of Charles Izard Manigault (1795-1874), grandson of Gabriel Manigault (1704-1781), a rice planter and businessman from South Carolina who was considered one of the wealthiest men in the colonies. It is known that between 1817 and 1823, Charles Manigault travelled widely in Asia, Australia and South America. On his return to the United States he entered the family business as a plantation owner. He was also an art … [Click Below for Full Description]

SH … [Click Below for Full Description]
