Pointis, Jean Bernard Louis]
Amsterdam, 1698. [8],143pp. plus one (of two) folding plates. 12mo. Contemporary calf, spine gilt, leather label. Rubbed at extremities, front hinge cracked. Bookplate of John Carter Brown on front pastedown, with his ink stamp on second leaf and small deaccession stamp on bookplate. Minor scattered foxing. Small tear to inner edge of map, expertly closed. Very good. Lacks the plan of Carthagena. The first edition of this first-hand account relating the French attack on Carthagena, organized and led by the Baron de Pointis. The expedition left Brest on January 9, 1697, stopping at Santo Domingo to pick up Jean Baptiste Ducasse, then governor of Tortuga, and some six hundred buccaneers. After a ferocious fight the city capitulated to the French buccaneers on May 3, and Pointis was able to secure at least $15,000,000 in booty. The six hundred pirates pillaged and burned the city for three days and Pointis emerged triumphant. The large folding map depicts the southeastern Caribbean. Only three copies are recorded at auction (including this one) in the last thirty years. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 698/169. PALAU 260435. SABIN 63700. [Attributes: First Edition]

HOFFWENIUS, PETRUS.
Stockholm, 1698. 8:o. (12),84 pp. & 8 woodcut plates. Contemporary pigskin-backed grey paper over wooden boards. Cover edges heavily worn, minor worming to head of spine. Hinges starting, occasional minor spotting and a few discrete underlinings in red chalk. A good copy.Collijn Sveriges bibliografi 1600-talet 394. The first edition, which lacked illustrations, was published as a series of dissertations in 1678. The present second edition was published and illustrated by Lars Roberg. "Synopsis physica" represents the definitive breakthrough for the new Cartesian worldview in Uppsala and Sweden. To avoid confrontation with the theologians Descartes is never mentioned by name, despite the fact that his theories and scientific results is the main content of the book! In Hoffwenius worldview Earth and the Solar System was not the result of divine creation but of slow and natural evolution. "Synopsis" was used as a textbook in Sweden into the 18th century. Petrus Hoffwenius was professor of medicine at Uppsala university and had already caused offence at the University Senate in 1664 with his dissertation "Parec-basis, qua tropos epistemos seu", which also was characterized by Cartesian reasoning. Tonti, Henri De, Chevalier
London, 1698. Contemporary calf. Rubbed, chipped at head of spine. Scattered foxing, minor browning, titlepage and first few leaves slightly stained, endpapers moderately soiled. Although worn, a good copy, in an unsophisticated contemporary binding with a notable early American provenance. In a half morocco and cloth box. This copy bears the ownership signature of Alexander Dallas, Secretary of the Treasury under James Madison, on the rear pastedown. This is Tonti's relation of La Salle's final expedition, here in the first English edition, after the Paris edition of 1697. This is the first issue, with "Grown" instead of "Crown" in the imprint. La Salle was the first to descend the Mississippi River from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, and this account by his second in command describes La Salle's search for the mouth of the Mississippi River and his intention to ascend it for the purpose of establishing a colony. La Salle was murdered by a mutinous band before his plans could come to fruition. "Tonti disclaimed authorship of this narrative, but it was probably based on his letters or memoirs with help possibly from Le Clerq's PREMIER ÉTABLISSEMENT DE LA FOI which had appeared in 1691" - Howes. A work of primary importance in regard to the early exploration of the Gulf Coast, Louisiana, Texas, and the Mississippi. Tonti's work is far rarer than the other primary account of La Salle's expedition, by Joutel. This English edition is particularly difficult to acquire.

Hennepin, Louis
Utrecht, 1698. [70],389pp. plus folding map and four folding plates. 12mo. Handsome tan crushed morocco, gilt extra, leather spine labels, marbled endpapers, a.e.g., by Lucien Broca. A few tiny marginal paper repairs. Otherwise, internally clean. Near fine. First edition. This edition of Hennepin's writings is a continuation of his NOUVELLE DECOUVERTE. of the previous year. In this work he added new material drawn from contemporary sources on Indian manners and customs and various North American travels. The first eight chapters describe the adventures and murder of La Salle, while the last concern the British treatment of the Recollets after the taking of Quebec in 1629. Lengthy passages are taken from Le Clercq's ETABLISSEMENT DE LA FOY of 1688. Despite the fact that Hennepin has been severely and justly criticized for imposture and plagiarism, his works, according to Thwaites, still stand as "invaluable contributions to the sources of American history; they deserve study, and to this day furnish rare entertainment. We can pardon much to our erratic friar, when he leaves to us such monuments as these." No other narratives of French exploration in the interior of North America enjoyed as wide a popularity or stimulated as much controversy and criticism among later scholars as those of Hennepin. A Recollet missionary, Father Hennepin went to New France in 1675, and in 1678 he set out with La Salle to explore the fertile basin of the Mississippi River. While La Salle turned back to raise funds to continue the voyage, Hennepin went on to ascend the river from Fort Crevecoeur … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas, Gabriel
London, 1698. Contemporary ruled sheep, with 8 leaves of original printed binder's waste sheets (probably Wing G61). Minor wear along front joint, but a near pristine copy in original binding. In a cloth chemise and half morocco and cloth slipcase. Provenance: Frank T. Siebert (Sotheby's New York, May 21, 1999, lot 122); Jay Snider (bookplate). One of the first extensive promotional tracts for New Jersey and Pennsylvania, based on the author's fifteen years there, and dedicated to William Penn. An enthusiastic promoter, Thomas describes the natural products of the country and the extent of settlement which had already taken place, as well as giving a good account of the Indian tribes of the area and specimens of the Delaware Indian language. He particularly encourages poor Englishmen to move there, and gives one of the first descriptions of Philadelphia. "Thomas had lived in America for about fifteen years, and the information contained in this book is the result of his own observations and experience. It was written to induce the immigration of all who wished to better their worldly condition, and especially of the poor who might subsist in West Jersey 'without either begging or stealing.' He gives an account of the natural products of the country and the improvements already made and in progress, as well as of the modes of life among the Indians and the prevailing intercourse between them and the settlers. In the Preface the author says: 'Nor is there the least question or doubt to be made, but this Noble Spot of Earth will thrive exceedingly'" - Church. Rene Descartes; Claude Picot
Rouen, Chez Jean-Baptiste Besongne, 1698. - 1698 Principles of Philosophy by Rene Descartes Metaphysics Isaac Newton Physics Very Rare French ed of Principia Philosophiae René Descartes (1596 – 1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician and writer who spent most of his life in the Dutch Republic. Principles of Philosophy (Latin: Principia philosophiae) is a book by René Descartes. It set forth the principles of nature—the Laws of Physics—as Descartes viewed them. Most notably, it set forth the principle that in the absence of external forces, an object's motion will be uniform and in a straight line. Newton borrowed this principle from Descartes and included it in his own Principia; to this day, it is still generally referred to as Newton's First Law of Motion. The work provides a systematic statement of his metaphysics and natural philosophy, and represents the first truly comprehensive, mechanistic account of the universe. We do not find any other examples of this work for sale elsewhere. However, there are other examples of late 17th-century printings of this work for sale for over $8,700! Arias Montanus, B.].
Benedictus Arias Montanus 1698. 34x50cm. No text verso. Except for some occasional paper thinning along the white margins, a clean, crisp and fine example of a rare map in a strong printing impression in full recent colour. A rare version of a world map, drawn after the itself rare Arias Montanus world map of 1571 (published in Antwerp in Plantin's Polyglot Bible), and shortly mentioned in Shirley's Corrigenda and Addenda (#125) without giving the source. Cartographic outline and text have been clearly copied from the Montanus map. However, the decorative features, like windheads, seamonsters, ships, etc. have been omitted. It was first published in a 9-volume bible commentary by John Pearson, entitled 'Critici Sacri: sive Annotata doctissimorum virorum in Vetus ac Novum Testamentum.' in 1660 in London (Wing P-994A). However, the engraver arranged the text of this variant map - published later by Janssonius van Waesberge in the 1698 Amsterdam edition of the same work - in very different tables, and below the map are vivid scenes of the Garden of Eden (left) and the deluge (right), which do not appear on any of the earlier versions of the map.
