COLLIER, Jeremy
1698. Paperback. Very Good. COLLIER, Jeremy. A SHORT VIEW OF THE IMMORALITY, AND PROFANENESS OF THE ENGLISH STAGE, TOGETHER WITH THE SENSE OF ANTIQUITY ON THIS ARGUMENT. London: Printed for S. Keble ... R. Sare ... H. Hindmarsh ..., 1698. First edition. [16], 288 pp. 19 x 12 cm. 8vo., old speckled calf with raised bands, gilt spine label and decorations. The upper board is nicely re-hinged. Contemporary ink ownership of Anne Guise, mother-in-law of Edward Howard, 9th Duke of Norfolk, on title-page, with the 9th Duke's armorial bookplate on front pastedown and an additional engraved note below bequeathing the book to his estate's library, stipulating that it remain in the family. Also small gilt leather bookplate of Burton William Pearl. Boards worn at corners, light foxing throughout, overall very good. The Rev. He railed against immorality, immodesty, profanity and blasphemy on the stage, and against the liberties afforded female characters (and actresses), because immorality on stage inspired immorality in audiences. Charles II's mistress Nell Gwynn was an actress, and by her mere existence could have doubly proved his point. This treatise sparked a pamphlet war, as refutations and satirical replies were made by Congreve, Vanbrugh and critic John Dennis, among others. One chapter segment outlined in the Table of Contents proposes "Delight not the Chief-end of Comedy". Tragedy and sentiment becoming popular in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Carriera, Rosalba (1675 Venedig 1757)
Kolorierter Kupferstich von B. Lépicié (1698-1755), nach einem Selbstbildnis, auf Bütten. 14,1:10,1 cm. Jahrhunderts.
