Middelburg plategrond - De Wit
Prijs: Euro950,- (incl. 21% BTW)

[LADMIRAL, Jan] and Bernard Siegfried ALBINUS.
Franklin, Colour printing, pp. 41-42, item 1; Landwehr, Coloured Plates 3; Lilly library 101; Wellcome Lib., p. 26; not in Norman Library. First edition of the first of six pioneering colour mezzotints, this one drawn by the German-born Dutch anatomist Albinus: one of the earliest applications of colour printing and the first colour-printed anatomical illustration by Jan Ladmiral, depicting the intestinal wall (muscularis mucosae) of a human being, with an explanation of the plate in Latin, French and Dutch. The painter Jan Ladmiral (1698-1773) and his brother Jacob were pupils and assistants of Jacob Christoph le Blon in London, who invented the method of mezzotint colour printing. It seems that when Ladmiral offered his services to the famous Albinus in Leiden, he presented this technique as entirely new and his own, without ever mentioning le Blon. Ladmiral produced 6 such anatomical illustrations for 6 separate publications, later published under the joint title: Anatomische voorwerpen door Jan Ladmiral. The main text of this first one is set in Nicolas Kis's roman type, with the first paragraph in his italic. The letterpress leaves foxed, with a water stain and small marginal wormholes, but the illustration in very good condition.

PONTOPPIDAN, Erik and Hand de HOFMAN.
Graesse V, p. 410; Kat. Schles. Holst. Landesbibl. 337; not in Berlin Kat. Rare complete set of the first and only early edition of the monumental atlas of Denmark by Erik Ludvigsen Pontoppidan (1698-1764), continued after his death by Hans de Hofman, and richly illustrated with the latest maps and views of all important sights and buildings in Denmark, engraved by I. Haas, I.G. Schmid and others. In addition to its value as a rich and beautiful atlas of 18th-century Denmark, it is of considerable importance for its extensive and scholarly description and history of the country, from its origins up to the time of publication. Each volume gives a list of its plates, and a 50-page index at the end of volume VII covers all seven volumes. Each volume with a 1798 owner's purchase inscription by C. Worgod and his stamp. With an occasional minor stain in the fore-edge margin or insignificant small marginal defect or repair, but generally in fine condition. The bindings are slightly rubbed, the head of the backstrip of volume I restored and the spine labels chipped, but the bindings remain in good condition. A fine copy of greatest atlas of Denmark, with more than 6000 pages and nearly 300 plates, rarely found complete.

RIDINGER, Johann Elias.
Cobres 310; Dejager 252; Mennessier de la Lance II, 429; Nissen, ZBI 3418; for the Adalbert von Lanna collection: Lugt I, pp. 516 ff. (no. 2773). Rare first edition, in German and French, of a great coloured print series, with a 39-page letterpress text, showing horses in a wide variety of colours and patterns by Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767), a German painter, graphic artist and engraver of animals, most famous for his horses: "one of the most beautiful illustrated animal books of the 18th century ... lavishly illustrated and also very rare" (Dejager). Together with the book we offer Ridinger's fine original pen and ink, ink wash and chalk drawing for the second plate. While many books or print series on horses show them standing or occasionally running in a race, most portraits in the present series show them much more naturally: stamping or pawing the ground, rearing up, jumping, kicking, sitting and rolling on the ground. When they do stand still they are often turning their heads. With significant tears in 2 plates, unobtrusively repaired without loss, but otherwise in good condition, with minor, mostly marginal repairs, small smudges or stains, or minor browned patches in a few other plates. The drawing has a minor crease in the paper, affecting only the background, but is otherwise in fine condition, with only a couple minor marginal defects, not approaching the drawn image. A beautiful and charming horse book, essential to any collection, with the original drawing for one of the plates in fine condition.

*** [English translation available upon request. KOENIGSHOFEN (Jacob Twinger von)
(1698) Schmit Ritter von Tavera, Bibliographie zur Geschichte des österreichischen Kaiserstaates, 1858, I, n°193. - Graesse, IV, p. 39. [Click Below for Full Description]

He was the first person to see capillaries in animals, and he discovered the link between arteries and veins that had eluded William Harvey. Mun, Thomas
Printed for E.J. for The Horne, London, 1698. First edition with the revised title of this milestone in economics, 'mercantilism at its best', originally published in 1664 as England's Treasure by Forraign Trade. Or, the ballance of our forraign trade is the rule of our treasure. "The title of this book became, in Adam Smith's words, 'a fundamental maxim in the political economy not of England only, but of all other commercial countries'. It gave Mun his claim to the title of founder of the mercantile system of political economy" (DNB). Small octavo, bound in full contemporary calf. Period ownership names to the front free endpapers. Exceedingly rare. "For those who want to read a single example of mercantilist writing, it is difficult to better Thomas Mun's England's Treasure by Forraign Trade, completed in 1628 and published posthumously in 1664. Adam Smith at any rate regarded it as perfectly representative of a vast body of similar literature: "The title of Mun's book,?? he said, "became a fundamental maxim in the political economy, not of England only, but of all other commercial countries??'(Blaug). Mun's work epitomized 'the marriage of economics and national policy in the 17th century' (PMM). It offered a compelling explanation of the dynamics of growth through commercial expansion, and advocated the promotion of the manufacturing and industrial sector as the true creator of added value. "Mun may be considered as the earliest expositor of what has been called the mercantile system of commercial policy. It was found to be indispensable to the profitable carrying on o … [Click Below for Full Description]

DENNIS, John
Rich. Parker. 1698 English Theater Defense Against Jeremy Collier Plays Dennis & Congreve 2in1 Two late 17th-century English works bound as one both of which were critical responses to Jeremy Collier. Collier was an English theater critic who controversially attacked English comedies. Collier s wrote on what he considered to be profanity and immorality in English plays. He believed plays should be providing moral encouragement, rather than encouraging unethical vices. John Dennis was an English dramatist known for his critical reviews of playwrights as well as his defenses against Collier. The Usefulness of the Stage was one of these defenses. William Congreve s plays seemed to be the most attacked by Collier. Congreve subsequently wrote his own work, Amendments , in hopes of calming the harshness aroused by Collier s Short View . PHAEDRUS
Henricum Wetstenium. 1698 1st ed Greek Literature Phaedrus Fables Aesop Stoic Philosophy Burmann Things are not always what they seem; the first appearance deceives many; the intelligence of a few perceives what has been carefully hidden. Phaedrus Phaedrus was a 1st-century fabulist and Roman poet known for his five books of verse fables. Many of his tales are adaptions of Aesop s famous tales, but he does include his own new stories as well. One major difference between Aesop and Phaedrus, however, is Phaedrus s treatment of the moral. Phaedrus emphasized the moral of the story much more than Aesop did. This edition of Phaedrus s Fables contains the commentary of Guidius, Ritterhusius, and Rigaltius. It also is considered to be widely accepted as a useful and correct edition, but it did not break new ground in the fable style . It was edited by Petrus Burmannus (Peter Burmann), a professor at Utrecht. His editions of Greek and Roman classics have all been considered acceptable to other intellects. In Burmannus s preface he tells the reader, the basis for this edition was laid by the German collector of Greek and Latin manuscripts Gudius . Moss claims this edition to be held in considerable estimation and is indeed a success. It was found to be reprinted and reissued several times during the next century. A fine woodcut frontispiece by Tiedeman and Mulder, which depicts Phaedrus writing while he listens to the Muse, in the background is Aesop surrounded by his fable animals. Item number: #1074 Price: $550 PHAEDRUS Phaedri . Fabularum aesopiarum libri v, cum integris comment … [Click Below for Full Description]

Malpighi's name is born by several physiological features related to the biological excretory system, such as the Malpighian corpuscules and Malpighian pyramids of the kidneys and the Malpighian tubule system of insects. MUN, Thomas.
First edition under this title, the third overall, of "the bible of later mercantilists" (PMM), first published as England's Treasure by Forraign Trade in 1664, though originally written in the 1620s. Retrospectively recognised as one of the key economic writers of the Stuart age, Mun's work was not published until some 23 years after his death, at a propitious moment on the eve of the second Dutch war, perhaps the clearest case in English history of a purely commercial war. Mun thought that the best way to increase the wealth of the nation was by foreign trade, "wherein wee must ever observe this rule; to sell more to strangers yearly than wee consume of theirs in value", thereby obtaining a favourable balance of trade. "The mercantilist programme in this book clearly symbolized the marriage of economics and national policy in the seventeenth century" (op. cit.) "Although the significance of the balance of trade had been aired by earlier writers, Mun's assertion of its importance profoundly influenced English economic thought for the ensuing 150 years" (ODNB).
