On display is a unique example of a 1698 King James Old and New Testament Bible printed by Charles Bill, Printer to his Most Excellent Majesty. This is a rare one of kind Bible with a most unique leather pattern and styling reminiscent of exquisite high french cultural influence containing dentelle stamping around the inside of the covers and 24 karat gold page edging. In addition it has original matching marbled endpapers. Very rare. Very light foxing is present throughout and is an expected condition of age. The cover is a magnificent gloss ebony black leather with exquisite gold leaf on the covers both front and back as well as spine. The spine shows 6, 24 karat gold leaf bands as well as 5 floret imprinting between them. The front and back covers have gold edging around then and flor de lis figures on the 4 corners. Both boards and spine are firmly attached and the book is tight and put together very well. This is a beautiful example of a late 1600's Bible. It measures approximately 6 1/2" x 3 3/4" x 1 1/2" and weighs just under 1 pounds. It is of course used and does show the expected wear and tear associated with its age. This is an incredible opportunity to own a piece of history in the form of a Bible printed over 3 centuries ago. With the beautiful gloss black ebony coloring and gold leafing on the spine it makes for a spectacular display. It could be opened up to any of the Title pages or left closed to show the beautiful 300 year old original leather cover. A magnificent addition to any collection. R P Louis Hennepin
Utrecht: Antoine Schouten, 1698. With three engraved plates and one folding map. Lacking one plate and one map as is quite common - may have been bound without it. Printed in original French. Louis Hennepin was a catholic priest and missionary of the Franciscan Recollect order and an explorer of the interior of North America. This is a continuation of his work from the previous year, in which Hennepin recounts his explorations to the New World. Hennepin was sent as a missionary to New France at the request of Louis XIV to accompany explorer Robert de la Salle, who was credited with claiming of the Mississippi river in the name of France. Hennepin was with La Salle at the construction of Fort Crevecouer when Le Salle sent Hennepin and two others as as an advance party to search for the Mississipi river. Hennepin was captured by the Sioux war party and abducted for a time. In these works Hennepin falsely calimed to have made a voyage of discovery along the lower Mississippi river before Le Salle's descent in 1682. Two great waterfalls were brought to the world's attention by Louis Hennepin, Niagara Falls and the Saint Anthony Falls, the only waterfall in the Mississippi River. In a quarter morocco binding. Externally, worn with some rubbing. Backstrip missing. Hinges tender. Bookbinder stamp to rear pastedown. Ink signature to front free-endpaper. Internally, binding strained. Pages bright with spotting throughout. Overall Condition: Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

A New Discovery of a Vast Country in America, Extending above Four Thousand Miles, between New France and New Mexico. With a Description of the Great Lakes, Cataracts, Rivers, Plants, and Animals. By Louis Hennepin Published: London: Printed for M. Bentley, J. Tonson, H. Bonwick, T. Goodwin, and S. Manship, 1698. [22], 243, [33], 228 pp. Two volumes in one, engraved frontispiece to volume one, 6 engraved folding plates, lacks the 2 maps. Bound in modern leather with raised bands, gilted leather spine label and new endpapers. THE FIRST DEPICTION OF NIAGARA FALLS Second English edition, considered typographically superior to the first, and first published in French in 1697. Two English editions were printed in 1698, this edition is has the first line of the printers on the title-page ending in "Tonson", and has alterations to the page numbers on the plates. An important but much decried account of Hennepin's travels in what is now the United States and Canada, including his probably fictitious description of his voyage down, and up, the Mississippi. One of the two plates is the first depiction of the Niagara Falls. Hennepin made two voyages to the New World, the first was on the same boat as the explorer René-Robert Cavalier de La Salle, arriving in Quebec in 1675. The following year he traveled to Fort Frontenac (now Kingston) on Lake Ontario and helped establish a mission there. In 1678 Hennepin was reassigned to Quebec and in November of that year accompanied La Salle on his exploration into the Great Lakes region. Hennepin accompanied Accault on an exploratory expedition … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chez Adrian Braakman, 1698. Ripa's Iconologia first appeared in 1593 in Italian, published at Rome and although unillustrated was an instant success with several subsequent editions and translations into German, Dutch, English, and French. The French is the work of Jean Baudoin (1590?-1650) and it first appeared in 1636. FRYER (FREYER), John.
[8], 566, [26] pp.First and only edition of the Dutch translation of A new account of East-India[!] and Persia (London, 1698), a highly accurate account of India and Persia, with numerous anecdotes and told with a fine sense of humour. The account is based on the experiences of John Fryer (ca. 1650-1733), a British East India Company surgeon who arrived in India in 1673, spending time at Masulipatam and Madras on the Coromandel Coast and at Bombay and Surat on the West Coast, with trips to Gokarna, Karwar, Goa and Junnar. From 1677 to 1679 he travelled in Persia, visiting the southern parts of the country and giving an extensive description of Isfahan. In 1677 he sailed through the Strait of Hormuz and visited Muscat, commenting on the city's Imam, religion and merchandise. At the end of 1677 Fryer left Isfahan and returned to India, where he remained until 1681. The text is divided into eight "letters", each devoted to a different region and a different period of his travels, describing the flora and fauna, religion, architecture, climate, government, etc.Fryer's writings "display a lively curiosity, which, sharpened by his scientific training, produces accurate observations in geology, meteorology, and all aspects of natural history. Fryer also provides some shrewd insights into the nature of Mughal government in the later years of Awrangzeb's reign (r. 1658-1707), ... His professional background makes Fryer a valuable commentator upon contemporary medicine as practiced in Surat" (Franklin). Some minor stains, one large (restored) and one small tear in the folding plates, … [Click Below for Full Description]

MUN, Thomas.
London: printed by E[dward]. J[ones]. for Tho. Horne, 1698. Small octavo (148 x 92 mm). Recent quarter calf, red morocco label, marbled sides, vellum tips. Closely cropped at head occasionally affecting running head, pages a little browned; a very good copy. First edition under this title, the third overall, of "the bible of later mercantilists" (PMM), first published as England's Treasure by Forraign Trade in 1664, though originally written in the 1620s. Retrospectively recognised as one of the key economic writers of the Stuart age, Mun's work was not published until some 23 years after his death, at a propitious moment on the eve of the second Dutch war, perhaps the clearest case in English history of a purely commercial war. Mun thought that the best way to increase the wealth of the nation was by foreign trade, "wherein wee must ever observe this rule; to sell more to strangers yearly than wee consume of theirs in value", thereby obtaining a favourable balance of trade. "The mercantilist programme in this book clearly symbolized the marriage of economics and national policy in the seventeenth century" (op. cit.) "Although the significance of the balance of trade had been aired by earlier writers, Mun's assertion of its importance profoundly influenced English economic thought for the ensuing 150 years" (ODNB). [22],243,[32],228pp. Frontispiece, two engraved folding maps and six engraved folding plates. Modern panelled calf, spine in six compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering piece in the second compartment, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt The desirable Tonson issue of the first edition in English of this important American narrative, including the first eye-witness account of Niagara Falls. The second issue of the English translation, known as the "Tonson issue," with plates and typography improved, after the original French edition published in Utrecht in 1697. No other narratives of French exploration in the interior of North America enjoyed as wide a popularity or stimulated as much controversy and criticism among later scholars as those of Hennepin. A Recollet missionary, Father Hennepin went to New France in 1675, and in 1678 he set out with La Salle to explore the fertile basin of the Mississippi River. While La Salle turned back to raise funds to continue the voyage, Hennepin went on to ascend the river from Fort Crevecoeur (Chicago) and penetrated farther northwest into the interior than any white man to that time. He discovered St. Anthony's Falls near the present site of Minneapolis, and provided the first eyewitness account of Niagara Falls. The engraving of the Falls which appears in his narrative, although an imaginative rendering, was the earliest to be published. Hennepin was subsequent … [Click Below for Full Description]

Engraved frontis., [22], 299, [1], [32],178, [2], 303–355 pp., plus two folding maps and seven plates (six of them folding) frontis. included. Armorial bookplate of original owner "Francis Fulford of Fulford in the County of Devon Esq. 1699." Housed in an old cloth slipcase. The first English edition, first issue (the "Bon" issue) of Father Louis Hennepin's enormously popular but partly fictitious and thus controversial account of his pathbreaking explorations in North America. This is an attractive, un-restored copy in its original late-17th century binding, and difficult to find as such. Offering one of the first accounts of the interior of North America-including the first published description and illustration of Niagara Falls-this important narrative was originally published in French in 1697 and then in English in the present edition of 1698. This edition combines Hennepin's second and third works: "Nouvelle Découverte" (1697) and "Nouveau Voyage" (1698). Father Louis Hennepin (1626–1704) of the Spanish Netherlands was a Roman Catholic priest and missionary of the Franciscan Recollet order, who was stationed—at the behest of Louis XIV—in French Canada beginning in 1675. There he would preach in Quebec and founded a convent at Fort Frontenac in 1676. Three years after his arrival in French Canada, Hennepi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thwaites, Edward, ed.
E Theatro Sheldoniano . typis Junianis, Oxoniae, 1698. First edition: A landmark work of Anglo-Saxon scholarship, edited by one of the most prominent early Oxfordians in the field of Old English literature. The Heptateuch (i.e., the Pentateuch, Joshua, and Judges) and the Book of Job, believed to have been translated into the vernacular by Aelfric, Abbot of Eynsham, are followed by the Gospel of Nicodemus and a fragment of the poem "Judith." Thwaites' inclusion of "Judith" marked => the first printing of Anglo-Saxon poetry from an English press. Additionally, this only the fifth work to print a portion of the Bible in Anglo-Saxon. While Wing claims that there was a previous Sheldonian edition in 1696, identical except for the absence of the "typis Junianis" on the title-page, all other sources we consulted give the publication date as 1698, and no institutionally held copies of a 1696 edition could be located (ESTC gives a "place-holder record" based on the Wing number). In addition, The History of Oxford University Press, which agrees with 1698 as the first appearance of the work, notes that due to alarm over Thwaites' having dedicated it to the nonjuring George Hickes, it was almost suppressed and had to be issued with a new title-page removing the Vice-Chancellor's imprimatur ? which might well explain the confusion. This production was modestly but beautifully embellished with => engravings done by Michael Burghers, being a dramatic engraved frontispiece (signature trimmed in this copy) and a pairing of large headpiece and decorative capital opening both the preface and … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAVERY, THOMAS. - [ORIGINAL PRINTED PATENT FOR THE VERY FIRST STEAM ENGINE]
1698. London, Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1857 + 1861. Lex 8vo. In the original blue printed front wrappers. Inner margins on both patents with nicks, not affecting text. 'Extension'-patent with traces after white paper on inner margin, not affecting text. A very fine and clean set. 4 pp. + 2 pp. ¶ Rare original printed patent for what is arguably one of the most important patents ever taken in the Western world: Thomas Savery's landmark invention of the steam engine with which he laid the foundation for the entire Industrial Revolution and the eventual British hegemony. Over the following 100 years, the steam engine was continuously improved upon and perfected, but Savery's is the very first functioning and economically feasible steam engine ever to be produced and patented. "Though not a steam engine in the modem sense of the word, embodied the first practical application of the force of steam to mechanical purposes" (DNB). His device, patented in 1698 and demonstrated before the Royal Society in 1699, "was a condensing type engine in which the steam was caused to condense within a receiver, thereby creating a vacuum and raising water to be pumped up within connected pipes." (Dibner).Savery's idea behind the engine was simple and was initially designed to function as a water-pump: "A vessel, called a receiver, was fixed at a height of not more than 22 to 26 feet above the level from which the water was to be pumped. Steam was fed to the receiver until it was full. The steam supply was then cut off and the steam in the receiver condensed by a spray of cold water; the consequent … [Click Below for Full Description]

CORONELLI VINCENZO MARIA.
Ottimo esemplare. Copper engraving, nine vignettes on a sheet, each about mm 130x170. Very interesting, an encyclopedia of astronomical history. Vincenzo Maria Coronelli was one of the most important and influential map makers of the late 17th Century. Coronelli's maps are among the nicest and most decorative of their time. HUYGENS
La Hague, Moetjens, 1698, un volume in 4 relié en plein veau moucheté (reliure de l'époque), (petite tache brune sans gravité sur le premier plat de couverture), 2pp., 144pp., 5 PLANCHES DEPLIANTES EDITION ORIGINALE ---- BEL EXEMPLAIRE ---- "THE FIRST ATTEMPT AT PHOTOMETRY" ---- "Huygens did not belive that complete certainty could be achieved in the study of nature, but thought that the philosopher must pursue the highest degree of probability of his theories. Clearly Huygens considered this degree to be adequate in the case of his explanations of light and gravity. It is difficult for the historian to assert how Huygens considered his theories about life on other planets and about the existence of beings comparable to man. The theories were expounded in his Kosmostheoros (1698). The argument of the book is very methodically set forth and its earnestness suggests that Huygens did indeed assign a very high degree of probability to these conjectures. In the Copernican world system the earth holds no privileged position among the other planets. It would therefore be unreasonable to suppose that life should be restricted to the earth alone. There must be life on the other planets and living beings endowed with reason who can contemplate the richness of the creation, since in their absence this creation would be senseless and the earth, again, would have an unreasonably privileged position... In the second part of Kosmostheoros Huygens discussed the different movements of the heavenly bodies and how they must appear to the inhabitants of the planets. He took the occasion to men … [Click Below for Full Description]

MACLAURIN, Colin
5 February, Edinburgh. Important autograph letter from the great Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin (1698-1746) discussing his most important work, Treatise of Fluxions (1742), "the earliest logical and systematic publication of the Newtonian methods. It stood as a model of rigor until the appearance of Cauchy's Cours d'analyse in 1821" (DSB). Autograph material by Maclaurin is of great rarity on the market - this is the only example we have traced at auction in the last 40 years. The letter reads in full, in English translation: I was honoured to receive your letter dated on the first day of the year, and it has been a long time since I received the copies of the Eloge of Cardinal of Polignac, which you so kindly sent to me. At that time, I was in the countryside, working on an addendum to my book [i.e. Treatise of Fluxions]. Then I had to take some brief journeys, which prevented me from thanking you as soon as I would have liked. Dr Martin, to whom you addressed one of your pieces, died during the Cartagena expedition. It seems to me that you have many reasons to be satisfied with the success of the Praise, even if it may be difficult to succeed in that kind of work. As regards my book, I am expecting different feelings about it, especially from foreigners who may not know all the reasons why I had to write about the components of the method in such a detailed manner. I hope that the second volume of the book will better satisfy their expectations, as I discuss the various useful and interesting issues. It would delight me if you found any of it to your taste. BRAND Adam.; IDES Eberhard Ysbrand
Through the Provinces of Ustiugha, Siberia, Dauri, and the Great Tartary, to Peking, the Capital City of the Chinese Empire. Translated from the Original in High-Dutch, Printed at Hamburgh, 1698. First edition. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Czar Peter the Great and two engraved plates. 12mo. Contemporary calf, slightly worn, but very good inside. Engraved ex-libris from the Macclesfield library. Title, 134pp. London, D. Brown & T. Goodwin, Ides (1657-1709), was a German of Dutch origin, a traveler and negotiator who served Tsar Peter I of Russia from 1691 to 1695, when he was sent to Peking to pay homage to the Kangxi Emperor. The meeting alleviated some of the tension between the two countries and helped to establish a fur trade. In this narrative he describes the sights and experiences of his long journey through Siberia to Peking. He was accompanied by Adam Brand (?-1746) who was a merchant and accompanied Ides as secretary and who is the author of the present work. The present English translation is based on an account published in Hamburg (Beschreibung der Chinesischen Reise. B. Schillern) in the same year. It is a tribute to the speed with which information passed between countries. Both are exceedingly rare. A fuller illustrated account of the embassy by Ides Ysbrand ('Three years travels from Moscow over-land to China') was published in London in 1706. The book also includes ?Some Curious Observations concerning Products of Russia, which may serve as a supplement to the Preceeding Treatise. Written originally in Latin by Henry William Ludolf?. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] New edition, after the first published in 1689. Binding full brown sheepskin speckled contemporary … [Click Below for Full Description]
