An Account Of the Taking of Carthagena [sic] by the French, In the Year 1697. Containing all the Particulars of that Expedition, from their first setting out, to their return into Brest

London: Printed for Sam Buckley, 1698.. First English edition, 8vo, (viii), 134, (2 advertisement) pp. Large folding map, with a small closed tear along a fold crease and some other minor wear, generally in very good condition. Contemporary calf with a simple blind stamped border, recently rebacked retaining the original gilt decorated backstrip. A major Spanish port in what is now Colombia, de Pointis was appointed by Louis XV to raid and plunder the city. He extorted some 8 million crowns in ransom and returned to France having swindled his buccaneer partners out of much of their share, which resulted in them returning to Cartagena for further destruction and looting.       London: J. Tonson, S. Buckley, and R. Knaplock, 1698.. [2],211,[1],44pp. Contemporary calf. Rubbed, chipped at head of spine. Scattered foxing, minor browning, titlepage and first few leaves slightly stained, endpapers moderately soiled. Although worn, a good copy, in an unsophisticated contemporary binding with a notable early American provenance. In a half morocco and cloth box. This copy bears the ownership signature of Alexander Dallas, Secretary of the Treasury under James Madison, on the rear pastedown. This is Tonti's relation of La Salle's final expedition, here in the first English edition, after the Paris edition of 1697. This is the first issue, with "Grown" instead of "Crown" in the imprint. La Salle was the first to descend the Mississippi River from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, and this account by his second in command describes La Salle's search for the mouth of the Mississippi River and his intention to ascend it for the purpose of establishing a colony. La Salle was murdered by a mutinous band before his plans could come to fruition. "Tonti disclaimed authorship of this narrative, but it was probably based on his letters or memoirs with help possibly from Le Clerq's PREMIER ÉTABLISSEMENT DE LA FOI which had appeared in 1691" - Howes. A work of primary importance in regard to the early exploration of the Gulf Coast, Louisiana, Texas, and the Mississippi. Tonti's work is far rarer than the other primary account of La Salle's expedition, by Joutel. This English edition is particularly difficult to acquire. SABIN 96171. WING T1890. GRAFF 4163.       Utrecht. 1698. - [70],389pp. plus folding map and four folding plates. 12mo. Modern vellum over boards, spine stamped, all edges red. Modern bookplate on front pastedown. Internally clean. Near fine. First edition. This edition of Hennepin's writings is a continuation of his NOUVELLE DECOUVERTE. of the previous year. In this work he added new material drawn from contemporary sources on Indian manners and customs and various North American travels. The first eight chapters describe the adventures and murder of La Salle, while the last concern the British treatment of the Recollets after the taking of Quebec in 1629. Lengthy passages are taken from Le Clercq's ETABLISSEMENT DE LA FOY of 1688. Despite the fact that Hennepin has been severely and justly criticized for imposture and plagiarism, his works, according to Thwaites, still stand as "invaluable contributions to the sources of American history; they deserve study, and to this day furnish rare entertainment. We can pardon much to our erratic friar, when he leaves to us such monuments as these." No other narratives of French exploration in the interior of North America enjoyed as wide a popularity or stimulated as much controversy and criticism among later scholars as those of Hennepin. A Recollet missionary, Father Hennepin went to New France in 1675, and in 1678 he set out with La Salle to explore the fertile basin of the Mississippi River. While La Salle turned back to raise funds to continue the voyage, Hennepin went on to ascend the river from Fort Crevecoeur (Chicago) and penetrated farther northwest into the interior than any white man to that time. He discovered St. Anthony's Falls near the present site of Minneapolis, and provided the first eyewitness account of Niagara Falls. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 698/101. ARENTS 432. CHURCH 774n. HARISSE 177.         El Nuevo Apostol de Galicia, religioso Capuchino, y Misionario Apostolico en la America, y Europa

Oficina de la viuda de Melchor Alvarez 1698 - First edition of one of the very few and earliest sources of information on the Caribes and the Provinces of Caracas and Cumana. 1698. Madrid. Oficina de la viuda de Melchor Alvarez. In 8vo (200 mm x 152 mm). 12 ff. + 507 + 12 ff. & portrait of Carabantes sorrunded by American natives. Contemporary limp vellum, remnants of ties, spine lettered in ink, slightly soiled, else fine, a most attractive binding. Worm holes to several leaves at the beginning, some affecting a little text, a few foxing spots and damp staining, else a remarkably fresh and clean copy. First edition; an exceedingly rare work on the life of this 17th century Capuchin monk in Venezuela and the Caribbean. Carabantes (1628 ¿ 1694) was one of the first Capuchin missionaries in America; although his name was Velazquez, he changed his name for that of his home town in 1645, when entering the order. In 1657, he arrived in the Island of Margarita (Venezuela), from there he went on to Caracas and Cumana, where he was able to evangelize the Caribes, a tribe notorious for its cruelty and ferocity. As often, the missionary learned the natives tongue and wrote subsequently a vocabulary for the missionaries. His stay in the region lasted for 9 years, after which he had to travel back to Spain to defend his fellow missionaries; after that, he planned to return to the Americas, but his superiors decided to keep him in Spain, where death found him short after. It is attributed to him the conversion of five ¿caciques¿ (denomination for the chiefs of the tribes). It is with little doubt one of the few, and more primitive, sources of information extant on several Provinces of Venezuela and local tribes amongst them, the Caribes, Cuacas, Tapies, etc. A copy of the ¿Copia de Carta escrita al Excelentissimo Señor Marques de Aytona¿ published in 1666 and written by Carabantes, is only registered as having appeared for sale by Maggs in the 20´s; no auction record is found for this work.       Paris: Andreae Cramoisy, 1698 - A confidant of Louis XVI, Jean Foy-Vaillant (1632-1706) was the greatest numismatist of his day. Trained as a doctor, he abandoned medicine to focus his considerabile energies on the much more rewarding pursuit of Roman coinage. This is his fifth work on the subject, and like its predecessors is profusely illustrated. This copy bears the ownership signature of Michael Richey, dated 1733, at the base of the title page. Richey (1678-1761), a professor of history and Greek at the Hamburg Gymnasium and a prolific writer; he collaborated with his friend and neighbor Georg Philipp Telemann to produce some of the earliest German lieder. A former library copy, with a label to the front pastedown, a perforated blindstamp to the titlte page, and numerals inked on white on the spine, the book is in sound condition with some wear to the covers and an old repair to the head of the spine. Falgate worked at the Bank of England. Neither OCLC, COPAC, or ESTC locate a 1698 edition (the earliest mention of Falgate is in the 1699 Almanack). .

London: Printed for, and sold by A. Baldwin, 1698. - [8],55,[13],34pp. plus folding engraved map. Contemporary ruled sheep, with 8 leaves of original printed binder's waste sheets (probably Wing G61). Minor wear along front joint, but a near pristine copy in original binding. In a cloth chemise and half morocco and cloth slipcase. Provenance: Frank T. Siebert (Sotheby's New York, May 21, 1999, lot 122); Jay Snider (bookplate). One of the first extensive promotional tracts for New Jersey and Pennsylvania, based on the author's fifteen years there, and dedicated to William Penn. An enthusiastic promoter, Thomas describes the natural products of the country and the extent of settlement which had already taken place, as well as giving a good account of the Indian tribes of the area and specimens of the Delaware Indian language. He particularly encourages poor Englishmen to move there, and gives one of the first descriptions of Philadelphia. "Thomas had lived in America for about fifteen years, and the information contained in this book is the result of his own observations and experience. It was written to induce the immigration of all who wished to better their worldly condition, and especially of the poor who might subsist in West Jersey 'without either begging or stealing.' He gives an account of the natural products of the country and the improvements already made and in progress, as well as of the modes of life among the Indians and the prevailing intercourse between them and the settlers. In the Preface the author says: 'Nor is there the least question or doubt to be made, but this Noble Spot of Earth will thrive exceedingly'" - Church. In addition to the geographic and ethnographic information it provides, Thomas' text also recognizes a nascent population boom that would sustain growth and development in the region. He writes: "Jealousie among Men is here very rare, and Barrenness among Women hardly to be heard of, nor are old Maids to be met with; for all commonly Marry before they are Twenty Years of Age, and seldom any young Married Woman but hath a Child in her Belly, or one upon her Lap." One of the most important early works on Pennsylvania, rich with descriptive information, in a fine contemporary binding. This copy sold for $40,250 at the Siebert sale in 1999. STREETER SALE 946.

      - The earliest appearance of Pierre Bayle's influential hatchet-job on Spinoza was in the Rotterdam edition of his Dictionaire historique et critique, 1697. This is the very rare first Dutch translation of that article, which was for a long time one of the main sources of information on Spinoza's life, and the central focus of hostility towards his doctrines. Bayle considered that Spinoza had been the first fully rational, and therefore the first and most dangerous, atheist in European philosophy. Edwin Curley comments: 'it is interesting as an example of how an intelligent contemporary could radically misread Spinoza' (A Spinoza Reader, p. xxxiv). Bayle's article occupies pp. 1-116 of this volume (Van der Linde 70), which also contains these other significant sources on the early reception of Spinoza: (1) Prelims: François Halma's polemics with Philopater (Duiker). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 8vo, [cxcii], 464, [16] pp., contemporary calf, spine gilt in compartments, nicked at head, corners a little worn, some dampstaining (mainly confined to inner blank margin), a few signatures lightly browned, no stamps or inscriptions, overall a very good copy of a rare and important book.         Folium populi.(Colophon:) Ingolstadt, [Petrus Apianus], 22 October 1533. Folio (30 x 20.5 cm). With the text in Latin and German, title-page in red and black with a large woodcut by Hans Brosamer; a nearly full-page woodcut of the coat of arms of the dedicatee, J.G. of Loubenberg; a large woodcut diagram printed twice (in the Latin and in the German text); and 7 decorative initial letters. Without the folding plate included in a very small number of copies. Modern boards with the original fly-leaves preserved.

Adams A-1289; Berlin Kat. 1698; BMC STC German, p. 37; DSB I, pp. 178-179; Van Ortroy, Apian 106; Zinner, Astron. Instrumente, pp. 233-234; Zinner, Astron. Literatur 1513; cf. WorldCat (microfilm only); for Brosamer, see Thieme & Becker V, pp. 66-67. First edition, in Latin and German, of Apianus's description of his newly invented sundial in the form of a poplar leaf. This instrument can be used to tell the hours of the day, the times of sunrise and sunset, and the so-called "Jewish" hours dividing the time between sunrise and sunset into 12 parts. The stunning woodcuts were executed by Hans Brosamer (ca. 1500-1554), with his monogram on the title woodcut next to the image of a woodblock cutter's knife. The title in the present copy is in an uncorrected state, with "RFCENS" and "RFDACTUM" for "RECENS" and "REDACTUM."Apianus (1495-1552), cartographer and professor of mathematics at the University of Ingolstadt, was a pioneer in the design of astronomical and geographical instruments. He set up a printing office in his own home in order to oversee his scientific publications. With wormholes slightly affecting the text and illustrations, but otherwise a very good copy and with generous margins. Lacking the final blank leaf, but with a contemporary fly-leaf at the front and another at the back. A pioneering horological work, beautifully illustrated.
