The Critici Sacri is a compilation of Latin biblical commentaries and was published for the first time in 1660, this edition from 1698 is an expanded edition. It contains nearly 10.000 pages of commentaries by well over fifty sixteenth and seventeenth century scholars and is perhaps the most ambitious universal Bible commentary ever compiled. The compilers brought together texts by Benedictus Arias Montanus, James Ussher, Christopher Cartwright, Johannes Drusius, Sixtinus Amama, Abraham Scultetus, Kaspar Waser, Sebastian Münster, François Vatable, Claudius Salmasius, Joseph Scaliger, Isaac Casaubon, Hugo Grotius, and many others. The commentaries and criticism are not arranged by author, but by the Bible passages they discuss, so that one can read and compare the views of all the leading scholars concerning any passage.)

ANTWERPIAE IN PHILIPPI REGIS CATHOLICI GRATIAM DESCRIBEBAT. Ao. MDLXXI’. Double hemisphere world map, showing principally the dissemination of the tribes of Israel. After

Benedictus Arias Montanus 1698 - 34x50cm. No text verso. Except for some occasional paper thinning along the white margins, a clean, crisp and fine example of a rare map in a strong printing impression in full recent colour. A rare version of a world map, drawn after the itself rare Arias Montanus world map of 1571 (published in Antwerp in Plantin's Polyglot Bible), and shortly mentioned in Shirley's Corrigenda and Addenda (#125) without giving the source. Cartographic outline and text have been clearly copied from the Montanus map. However, the decorative features, like windheads, seamonsters, ships, etc. have been omitted. It was first published in a 9-volume bible commentary by John Pearson, entitled 'Critici Sacri: sive Annotata doctissimorum virorum in Vetus ac Novum Testamentum.' in 1660 in London (Wing P-994A). However, the engraver arranged the text of this variant map - published later by Janssonius van Waesberge in the 1698 Amsterdam edition of the same work - in very different tables, and below the map are vivid scenes of the Garden of Eden (left) and the deluge (right), which do not appear on any of the earlier versions of the map.

Indisches Mogulreich, seltene Geschichte Indiens, Hofmann J., an

This second edition, considerably extented, explains how to prepare jams under Louis XIV. The text is illustrated with 2 woodcuts and a plate describing a table seted. Good copy in a very attractive contemporary binding. Fine. Chez Jean Guignard, à Paris 1698, In 12 (9x16,3cm), (12) 275pp. (1), relié. - Second edition, rare. Although Cioranescu gives this edition to be the first, there would have been an issue in 1697, as confirmed by the privilege. Full Sheepskin brown speckled contemporary. Back tooled raised. Part of title in red morocco. Head cap partly threadbare. Little lack tail. Good copy. Travelogue of a forced to leave France, whose journey begins in Milan soldier, through Venice, where the narrator dwells at length on the customs and monuments. After service with the Venetians and covered part of Greece, the author leaves the Venetian army and returned to Italy, visiting Naples, Rome and Florence, and then returns to France. Close fast enough narrative of the novel, but still lingers on the characteristics of a place. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

[bound with:] L'ART DE VOYAGER UTILEMENT

Amsterdam. 1698.. [10],402,[2]; [4],51,[1]pp. plus frontispiece. 12mo. 20th-century green morocco by Brugalla, gilt, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Spine lightly sunned. Minor scattered foxing. Near fine. An interesting combination of Montauban's account of his buccaneering voyages against the slave ships off Guinea, and Las Casas' stirring tracts against the brutal treatment of the West Indies natives. Sieur de Montauban was a member of the group of French pirates who took the name "Freres de la Cotes." His hatred for the Spanish and English impelled him to terrorize their slave ships off the West African coast. He became famous for freeing African slaves and for his demonstrated respect for their humanity. Las Casas, the first great historian and humanist of the New World, arrived in Cuba in 1502 and spent most of his time in the Caribbean and Mexico until his return to Spain in 1547. An early critic of Spanish policy, he nonetheless rose to be Bishop of Chiapas. After his return to Spain, he launched a series of attacks on Spanish Indian policy. His tracts, first published in 1551-52 and printed in the present volume in an English translation, denounce Spanish cruelty to Indians in the West Indies and Mexico. This is a translation of four of the nine Las Casas tracts, softened in some of the cruel parts "which might have given pain to delicate persons" (Sabin). The third work, L'ART DE VOYAGER UTILEMENT, is a short, rare, anonymous piece extolling the virtues of "le Voyager." Its author discusses what it takes to join their ranks - courage and rugged strength to endure the inevitable hardship and deprivation that accompanies life on the high seas and in unknown parts of the world. A handsome volume. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 698/33, 698/148. SABIN 11274. PALAU 46965n. MEDINA (BHA) 1085n. JCB (4) 359. NICHOLSON C127. HANKE 560. STREIT I:735.

        Discourses concerning Government

London: Printed, and are to be sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster,, 1698. Published from an original manuscript of the author. Folio (315 × 205 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, blindstamp rule border to covers, neatly rejointed, new contrasting spine label. Joints and spine ends neatly restored, new red morocco label. Front free endpaper with neat tape repair. A few leaves browned; an excellent copy. First edition of this major text of republican theory written between 1681 and 1683 and originally circulated as a manuscript. "Although long and sometimes repetitive the Discourses places Sidney alongside Milton as the master of republican eloquence. It is the power of its prose, as much as any aspect of its content, which helps to account for the work's exceptional subsequent impact in Britain, continental Europe, and America. Polemically a refutation of Sir Robert Filmer's Patriarcha (1680), the practical purpose of the Discourses is again to argue for armed resistance to oppression ... for subsequent influence in Enlightenment Britain, America, the United Provinces, Germany, and France he had no seventeenth-century rival except John Locke" (ODNB). "Sidney was executed in 1683 for complicity in the Rye House Plot, his papers, including the [unpublished] Discourses, being used against him. The indictment cited sentences saying that the king is subject to law, is responsible to the people, and may be deposed, as a 'false, seditious, and traitorous libel'… Sidney's Discourses Concerning Government was not published until 1698" (Sabine, 512). Thomas Jefferson was one of many influenced by Sidney's ideas. In 1804, he wrote of the Discourses: "They are in truth a rich treasure of republican principles, supported by copious & cogent arguments, and adorned with the finest flowers of science. It is probably the best elementary book of the principles of government… which has ever been published in any language" (Sowerby III: J6). "Jefferson identified Sidney as one of four writers who provided the intellectual foundations of the Declaration of Independence" (A Covenanted People, 56).

R.[obert] R.[oberts] for Ri[chard] Chiswell, London 1698 - Wing F2257. ESTC R23401. Cox I: p 280. Kress S.2042. Goldsmiths'-Kress 03475.2. Not in Atabey or Blackmer. "Fryer was a surgeon in the service of the East India Company for nine years and travelled extensively on the Coromandel and Malabar coasts. He describes well the cities of Surat and Bombay, the life and trade there as well as at Madras. Nearly sixteen years elapsed before he could be persuaded to publish the story of his wanderings. At length piqued at the frequent appearance of translations of foreign, especially French, books of travel, in which English industry and enterprise were decried, he issued a handsome folio," (Cox, 'Reference Guide To The Literature Of Travel, Vol I, p. 280). "As a surgeon in the service of the East India Company, he left England in December 1672 and arrived at Masulipatam in June 1673. He spent the following four years on the Coromandel and Malabar coasts, visiting and describing Surat, Bombay and Madras. He also travelled to Gokarna, Karwar, Goa, and ventured inland to Junnar. He was in Persia between 1677 and 1679, then returned to India until 1681. [his] account of the places he visited is accurate and reliable with numerous anecdotes told with a fine sense of humour'' (Howgego, 'Encyclopedia of Exploration to 1800', p.406). It is a "book rich in details of natural history and local medical practice," (DNB). Small puncture on one leaf at Oo, not affecting text, leaves at Pp and Pp4 browned, a few minor shallow stains on the fore margins of some later leaves, very faint institutional stamp on margins of a few leaves, otherwise leaves clean, impressions sharp, and overall a near fine copy in an exceptionally handsome binding. Calf ruled and decorated in blind, five raised bands, compartments heavily decorated in gilt, red morocco lettering piece, all t. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        PYROSOPHIA

Cornelius Boudestein, Leiden 1698 - (16), 469, (3=addenda and Nnn4 blank) pp. 5 plates. 4to. (195*160 mm.). Title printed in red and black. Contemporary overlapping vellum. spine renewed, however with title in old hand. "a formal, systematic textbook that deals with the principles of chemistry, both theoretical and practical, and that attempts to demonstrate their applicationsto natural philosophy, medicine, metallurgy and alchemy" (DSB). Barchusen studied pharmacy at several universities, including the universities of Berlin, Mainz and Vienna. He settled in Utrecht in 1694, and after being awarded an honorary M.D. by the city in 1698, he was appointed extraordinary professor of chemistry in 1703. He is widely recognised as the first professor to give chemistry its own place as an independent science within university education. Besides chemistry, Barchusen was interested in botany, physics and astronomy. He stipulated in his will that his botanical books, some of which included notes in his own handwriting, and all other works in the field of 'historia rerum naturalium' (natural history), insofar as not present in the library of the university, should be housed in this collection. After Barchusen's death in 1723 the city fathers took possession of 165 works, the 'Legatum Berkhusianum', plus a portrait of the bequeather that is still part of the Utrecht university library collection. Barchusen's work shows his development from a practicing pharmacist to a professor of the new academic discipline of chemistry. His first book Pharmacopoeus synopticus, published in 1690, was a pharmaceutical work. After his arrival in Utrecht, he published a further three works on chemistry, of which Pyrosophia is the most important. Although Barchusen was not a chemist of genius, his activities much contributed to the high level of the Dutch academic chemistry from which his illustrious contemporary at Leyden, Hermann Boerhaave, emerged as the most influential teacher in the first decades of the eighteenth century. The major development from one author to the other is, that Barchusen has a chapter Alchemia sive Arte Transmutatoria at the end of his book, a subject occurring in the index of Boerhaave, however with page references to the historical introduction [beginning of volume I] only. The subject thus disregarded by Boerhaave for serous discussion survived outside academia. Casanova had a strong interest in the transmutation into gold and elixirs for staying young eternally. Honeyman 208. Bierens de Haan 159. 3 copies in NCC [UvA, RUL and Utrecht]. Reprinted in 1718 with Haak [also Leiden] under the title Elementa Chemiae with minor alterations, a much more common title than the original text offered here.
