ITA

Later stiff paper wrappers.

Franklin, Colour printing, pp. 41-42, item 6; Landwehr, Coloured Plates 109; Lilly library 101; STCN (7 copies); Wellcome Lib., p. 428; not in Norman Library. First edition of a pioneering colour mezzotint, depicting a disected human penis by Jan Ladmiral, with an explanation of the plate in Latin, French and Dutch. One of the earliest applications of colour printing and among the first colour printed anatomical illustrations. It was the last in a series of 6 anatomical colour mezzotints Ladmiral made. The painter Jan Ladmiral (1698-1773) and his brother Jacob were pupils and assistants of Jacob Christoph le Blon in London, who invented the method of mezzotint colour printing. It seems that when Ladmiral offered his services to the famous Albinus in Leiden, he presented this technique as entirely new and his own, without ever mentioning Le Blon. Ladmiral produced 6 such anatomical illustrations for 6 separate publications, later published under the joint title: Anatomische voorwerpen door Jan Ladmiral. With the initial integral blank leaf, often lacking. Letterpress leaves somewhat foxed and browned, but the illustration in very good condition.

Synopsis physica disputationibus aliquot academicis comprehensa.

Editio secunda cum figuris. Sthlm, 1698. 8:o. (12),84 s.

Venezia 1698 - Incisione in rame, mm 405x510, margini molto ampi.

Delft, printed by Hendrik van Kroonevelt [engravings printed by Petrus Schenk and Gerard Valck?], 1698. - Large folio (39.5x26 cm). [20], 398, [8] pp. With engraved frontispiece, engraved author's portrait, large engraved folding map of the Mediterranean Sea, 103 engraved plates (many double-page and folding, and often containing more than one illustration) and 18 engravings in text (totally containing 218 illustrations, numbered A & 1-210). The engraved plates are all after drawings by De Bruin and contain 15 plates engraved by Jan Luyken and 1 by Casper Luyken, all but one unsigned. 18th-century, gold-tooled, tanned goatskin, marbled edges; rebacked, with original backstrip laid down and modern endpapers. Large paper copy of the first edition of the beautifully illustrated account of De Bruyn's first journey, visiting Egypt, Syria, The Holy Land, Rhodes, Cyprus, Scio and Turkey. The Dutch traveller and painter Cornelis De Bruyn (1652-1726/28) left The Netherlands in 1674 to travel through the Levant by way of Italy. He stayed in the Levant for seven years before settling in Italy in 1685 and returning to the Netherlands in 1693. The work is especially valued because of its engravings after the drawings made by De Bruyn and executed by well-known artists as Jan and Caper Luyken and others, which include, amongst many others, folding panorama's of Alexandria, Sattalia, Constantinople, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Rhodes and Chios. The publication was soon followed by editions in English and French. - The present copy is printed on large paper from a single stock, watermarked: fleur-de-lys on a crowned shield above 4 and WR = WK, with a trimmed leaf size measuring 396 x 259 mm. (not in Heawood or Laurentius). - With some occasional spots, some folds and edges of the plates reinforced or mounted on new stubs; a very good copy. The binding rebacked as noted and with some wear to the tooling. Atabey 159; Howgego, to 1800, B177; Klaversma & Hannema 311; Tiele, Bibl. 207; cf. K. Gnirrep, De Levant in een kleur (1997). Despite the rather dry legal-administrative language there, we learn much from this about => life among the Mexican Franciscans: 1) that they are prohibited to attend bull fights and to play at cards and dice, 2) how they are to address each other, 3) when they may be put to torture in investigations, 4) their penalties for simony, 5) who they may allow to be buried in their churches, 6) how they are to conduct relations with women, and so on as to many, many more aspects of daily life. And, of course, the volume covers much about the administration of the order, the admission of novices, the pursuit and expression of spiritual life, etc. The work begins with the title-page printed in black and red in roman with some italic. The text is in roman also, with sidenotes in some sections, and with a sprinkling of interesting woodcut tailpieces. => A dense and interesting work. Recased in original (?) vellum with four leather ties (two new). Title-leaf mounted; damage to lower third with loss of paper and print including imprint; approbation leaves torn in same portion, repaired with loss of a few words; first leaf of the "Parecer" torn and repaired with no loss. Some worming of both types: pinhole and meander, the latter repaired with archival tissue. Otherwise, occasional light waterstaining only; a solid, serviceable copy.

The present state of the Socinian controversy, and the doctrine of the Catholick fathers concerning a trinity in unity.

London: William Rogers 4to (20.5 cm, 8.1"). [12], 388 pp.. 1698 Sole pre-20th-century edition of this important entry in the first Socinian controversy in the Church of England, from a learned divine noted for his pugnaciousness in print. The author's earlier Vindication of the Doctrine of the Holy and Ever Blessed Trinity, intended as an attack on Socianism, had led to accusations of tritheism and heresy; here he defends more orthodox doctrine on the subject. The main text is in English, with extensive shouldernotes in Latin and Greek. Contemporary speckled calf, panelled with corner fleurons in blind, rebacked in similar calf, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and blind-tooled compartment decorations; sides acid-pitted, edges rubbed. All edges speckled red. Lower margin of title-page and lower (closed) edges institutionally rubber-stamped, no other markings. First few leaves foxed with scattered light spots elsewhere, last few signatures browned; one leaf with two small portions lost from outer margin; one outer corner torn away; one leaf torn across between header and text without any of this affecting text. A solid, tight, and dignified-looking copy.

A NEW DISCOVERY OF A VAST COUNTRY IN AMERICA, EXTENDING ABOVE FOUR THOUSAND MILES, BETWEEN NEW FRANCE AND NEW MEXICO; WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE GREAT LAKES...WITH A CONTINUATION, GIVING AN ACCOUNT OF THE ATTEMPTS OF THE SIEUR DE LA SALLE UPON THE MINES OF ST. BARBE, &c. THE TAKING OF QUEBEC BY THE ENGLISH...

London: Printed for M. Bentley, J. Tonson, H. Bonwick, T. Goodwin, and S. Manship, 1698. Contemporary calf, spine gilt. Contemporary bookplate on front pastedown. Minor foxing. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth clamshell case. The first issue of the English translation, known as the "Bon issue," with plates and typography improved, after the original French edition published in Utrecht in 1697. No other narratives of French exploration in the interior of North America enjoyed as wide a popularity or stimulated as much controversy and criticism among later scholars as those of Hennepin. A Recollet missionary, Father Hennepin went to New France in 1675, and in 1678 he set out with La Salle to explore the fertile basin of the Mississippi River. While La Salle turned back to raise funds to continue the voyage, Hennepin went on to ascend the river from Fort Crevecoeur (Chicago) and penetrated farther northwest into the interior than any white man to that time. He discovered St. Anthony's Falls near the present site of Minneapolis, and provided the first eyewitness account of Niagara Falls. The engraving of the Falls which appears in his narrative, although an imaginative rendering, was the earliest to be published. Hennepin was subsequently captured by the Sioux, and after several months of wandering, he was rescued by Daniel De Lhut. This edition contains translations of both Hennepin's second and third books, NOUVELLE DECOUVERTE... and NOUVEAU VOYAGE.... The first presents a fairly reliable account of Hennepin's actual travels and experiences, but also incorporates his entirely false claim to have descended the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. This is, in fact, Father Zenobe Membre's account, which Hennepin boldly plagiarized from Le Clercq's ETABLISSEMENT DE LA FOY. In his sequel, NOUVEAU VOYAGE, Hennepin added new material drawn from contemporary sources on Indian manners and customs and various North American travels. The first eight chapters describe the adventures and murder of La Salle, while the last concern the British treatment of the Recollets after the taking of Quebec in 1629. Despite the fact that Hennepin has been severely and justly criticized for imposture and plagiarism, his works, according to Thwaites, still stand as "invaluable contributions to the sources of American history; they deserve study, and to this day furnish rare entertainment. We can pardon much to our erratic friar, when he leaves to us such monuments as these." The maps are of great importance for the cartography of the Midwest. JCB (2)II:1535. WING H1450. SABIN 31371. Signed by ""John March."" Judge Saltonstall continues, ""This was put in August 8.98 as a Demur on Plea of title to ye land, before me N: Saltonstall J.P….""John March was a taverne keeper in Newbury as well as a Major in the militia. Early in the summer of 1691, a small force under the command of then Capt. John March, of Newbury, and Capt. Daniel King, of Salem, was sent to look after the Indians, who had become troublesome in the vicinity of York and Wells, on the coast about 30 miles north in the Massachusetts Bay province of Maine. Caleb Moody, a maltster who most probably dealt with March in business, was a member of Capt. John March's force. In 1668, Nathaniel Saltonstall (1639-1707) began his career in town affairs when he was appointed town clerk. According to Robert Moody in The Saltontstall Papers, according to a single surviving record book, he was ""firm and effective in law enforcement, and yet, where allowed discretion by law, humane and flexible."" He also served as Justice of the Peace and was a member of the local militia rising to the rank of Colonel. He took an active part in deposing Governor Edmund Andros who had been appointed Governor of the new Dominion of New England formed by King James II in 1686. When Governor Andros took power, Saltonstall quit as a representative in the General Court because he refused to serve in Andros' government. The Dominion combined all New England colonies into a single unit. After James II was deposed in the 1688 Glorious Revolution, Saltonstall and other major political leaders Andros and other English authorities arrested in April 1689. The Province of Massachusetts Bay was chartered on October 7, 1691, by joint monarchs William and Mary and took effect on May 14, 1692. Two weeks later, on May 27, 1692, the Court of Oyer and Terminer was established to try witchcraft cases. Its members were Lieutenant Governor William Stoughton, Nathaniel Saltonstall, Bartholomew Gedney, Peter Sergeant, Samuel Sewall, Wait Still Winthrop, John Richards, John Hathorne, and Jonathan Corwin.Signed material from any of the Salem Witch Trial judges is seldom encountered, with most of the jurists virtually impossible to obtain as only a scant few examples have reached the market in the past fifty years. This is a well-preserved, legible example. In 2011, a one page, 4.5"" x 8.25"" Autograph Document Signed once by Nathaniel Saltonstall and with a much less desirable 18th century date sold at public auction for over $3200. "

Dissertatio de arteriis et venis intestinorum hominis. Leiden, Dirk Haak; Amsterdam, Jacob Graal, Hendrik de Leth, 1736. 4to. With woodcut vignette on title-page and colour mezzotint printed from 4 plates (3 colours plus black, ca. 17 x 12.5 cm) by Jan Ladmiral pasted on inside of back wrapper, with green margin and gilt border. Later stiff brown paper wrappers.

Franklin, Colour printing, pp. 41-42, item 1; Landwehr, Coloured Plates 3; Lilly library 101; Wellcome Lib., p. 26; not in Norman Library. First edition of the first of six pioneering colour mezzotints, this one drawn by the German-born Dutch anatomist Albinus: one of the earliest applications of colour printing and the first colour-printed anatomical illustration by Jan Ladmiral, depicting the intestinal wall (muscularis mucosae) of a human being, with an explanation of the plate in Latin, French and Dutch. The main text of this first one is set in Nicolas Kis's roman type, with the first paragraph in his italic. The letterpress leaves foxed, with a water stain and small marginal wormholes, but the illustration in very good condition.
