Exemplaire complet. Anville d Jean Babtiste ( 1697 - 1782 ) Paris
Artist: Anville d Jean Babtiste ( - 1782 ) Paris; issued in: Paris; date: ca 1740, 1697. technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 102 x 119; - description: map of Asia after Capt. Cook; - vita of the artist: Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697 ?1782), was both a geographer and cartographer who greatly improved the standards of map-making. His maps of ancient geography, characterized by careful, accurate work and based largely on original research, are especially valuable. He left unknown areas of continents blank and noted doubtful information as such; compared to the lavish maps of his predecessors, his maps looked empty. His first serious map, that of Ancient Greece, was published when he was fifteen. At the age of twenty-two, he was appointed one the king's geographers, and began to attract the attention of first authorities. D'Anville's studies embraced everything of geographical nature in the world's literature, as far as he could muster it: for this purpose, he not only searched ancient and modern historians, travelers and narrators of every description, but also poets, orators and philosophers. One of his cherished subjects was to reform geography by putting an end to the blind copying of older maps, by testing the commonly accepted positions of places through a rigorous examination of all the descriptive authority, and by excluding from cartography every name inadequately supported. Vast spaces, which had before

LeCOMTE, Louis
1697 CHINA Illustrated Chinese Rites Science Astrology Confucius Jesuit Le Comte The history of China has always been one of the most popular discussions of western culture and was a regular occurring topic of authors from the 16th- 18th-centuries. One of the most important examples of Chinese history was written by Louis Le Comte, a French Jesuit who wrote this work on his mission to China in 1688. This work, ‘Nouveau Memoires’ created a huge debate within the Chinese Rites Controversy. These tomes cover various Chinese empires and kingdoms including the K’ang His and Kangxi, Chinese astrology and star gazing, Zodiac and mythology, Chinese boats, Mandarin costumes, mechanical inventions, and establishment of Christianity in China. While these contents are important, the most desirable aspect of this book is the section devoted to Confucius and his teaching, along with a rare portrait of Confucius. A highly desirable work with fascinating contents that includes 22 full-page engravings! This lot includes a supplementary volume from Gobein’s ‘Memoires of China’ – a work that describes in detail Jesuit missions to China, Dominican friars in China, the role of Chinese women in the church, first-hand accounts of ceremonies honoring Confucius, and witnessing supernatural wonders. THIERS, Jean Baptiste.
Antoine Dezallier, Paris, 1697. Hardcover. Two volumes. Small octavos. French text. (xxxii) 532pp & (xxviii) 520pp. Modern full leather with gilt rules and embellishments to boards and spine, raised bands and gilt titling to spine, marbled page edges, fresh endpapers. The 'Traité des superstitions selon l'Ecriture Sainte,' ('Treatise on Superstitions According to Holy Scripture') was one of the best known and comprehensive of what have been termed the "catalogs of superstitions." It was written by Jean Baptiste Thiers (1636-1703), a French theologian, to aid other churchmen in the identification of what would now be termed folk or popular religious and magical beliefs, so that they could be better refuted and suppressed. As such it was in some ways an encyclopedia of such beliefs, with much on magic, 'the black arts', folk-healers, curses, talismans, astrology and all forms of divination, exorcism etc. etc. This edition was considerably revised and expanded from the First Edition of 1679. A few light scratches to boards, light bump to lower edge of upper board of volume II, small biographical clipping about the author tipped onto first blank, light browning to margins, otherwise a sound and attractive VG+ set.
[Click Below for Full Description]

ETTNER, Johann Christoph von.
Augspurg und Leipzig: bey Lorentz Kroniger u. Gottlieb Göbels sel. Erben, 1697. FIRST EDITION, second issue, with the date altered from 1696. "The book is directed against chemical quackery of the time and is of considerable historical interest. "One point which has not, I believe, been mentioned before is the very interesting passages referring to Eckhart's visit to England, and particularly his relations with Robert Boyle. One visit to Boyle is mentioned on pp. 653-655, where Boyle discusses some colours with him and makes some experiments. He shows him a ring made of 'auro philosophico' and invites him to visit the Collegium Regium with him. This is described on pp. 678-681, when Eckhart and his friends meet Boyle at Gresham College... They see the library and inspect the library catalogue... There is a further mention of Boyle, when he makes his return visit to Eckhart (p. 790), and they talk for two or three hours" (Duveen). Ettner (1650-1724) was a noted physican and chemist from Breslau who often wrote under the pseudonym Eckhart. Fulton 359 (this issue). Duveen p. 198 (this issue). SCAMOZZI, VINCENT.
Nürnberg, Johann Hoffmann, 1697 (1678). Folio. (33,5 x 21,2 cm.). Contemp. full vellum. Faint handwritten title on spine. Covers a bit spotted, but fine condition. Ornamental engraved title-page dated Nürnberg 1678 ( with title: "L'Idea della Architettura universale" and including a portrait of the author) as frontispiece. (14),192 pp. and 85 engraved plates (no plate numbered 51, but 2 plates numb. 53). Including 3 double-page plates. A few right margins with small wormtracts, affecting a few plates. Sometimes light browning, but internally clean. ¶ Scarce second German edition of the main architectural work in the first part of the 17th Century.<br>"Scamozzi's influence spread far beyond his Italian commissions through his two-volume treatise, L'Idea dell'Architettura Universale ("The Idea of a Universal Architecture"), which is one of the last works of the Renaissance dealing with the theory of architecture. It was originally published with woodcut illustrations at Venice in 1615. Scamozzi depended for sections of his treatment of Vitruvius on Daniele Barbaro's commentary, published in 1556 with illustrations by Palladio; he also discussed issues of building practice. At that time, such treatises were becoming a vehicle for self-promotion. Scamozzi was aware of the potential value of publicity distributed through the established channels of the book trade and he included many of his own plans and elevations, as built, as they should have been built, and as idealized projects."(Wikipedia). - Ornamentkat.-Bln. A fine set, though I think the text has probably been washed. The first printing of this collection of erotic and satiric verse that I have located is dated 1613 [1623], it was republished several times in the 17th and 18th centuries and well into the 19th century. The main author was Nicolas Vauquelin, seigneur des Yveteaux (1567 - 1649), and a large number of authors made contributions. This is the copy that was in the de Backer sale in 1926. Brunet I, 1446; Tchermezine III, 192, citing the sale of this copy.

SAINTE-MARTHE (Denys).
Rouen, Veuve Behourt, Louis Behourt, 1697.

Contemporary Italian full with gilt spine title. All edges sprinkled red. One of Hertz's two 1697 issues of this important instructional work on bookkeeping (first printed in 1638; part three, here still issued under its original title "I frutti d'Albaro", is in its third edition; part four, first printed in 1665, in its second edition). "Peri was the first to be independent of the Venetian school" (Hausdorfer 188). Palgrave notes that the work "has much wider aims than the author would lead us to believe. It is a technical handbook for merchants, to teach them trading and book-keeping, treating at much length of the method of mercantile accounts called the system of double entry. It contains also interesting historical notices on the exchanges between the principal Italian and foreign cities [.] Following the impulse given to comparatively liberal opinions in public economy and commerce, as by Scaccia, Stracca, and other followers of commercialist doctrines, Peri demonstrates the importance of merchants, and pleads for them and commerce." Although this edition announces an additional part on commercial correspondence by Mattia Cramer, the present copy does not contain it. - Occasionally slightly browned and foxed; some wrinkles and dog-ears, otherwise well-preserved. FLOYER, John (Sir)
R, Clavel at the Peacock, 1697. FIRST EDITION Contemporary calf, possibly rebacked at an early date, spine in compartments with spine label; some spotting, but overall a very good copy. First edition. After a lengthy preface, Floyer provides a short discussion on the pros and cons of both hot and temperate baths, and then launches into his treatment of cold water as a medical miracle. He sets out the history of cold bathing, then discusses specific cases, and includes descriptions of various local baths as well as testimonials by other physicians. "From his convictions, amounting almost to an obsession, concerning the value of cold bathing, he was able to persuade 'worthy and obliging gentlemen' to contribute towards erecting a cold bath at a house owned by a relative and friend, the Pyotts, near Lichfield. In fact two baths were built, an upper ladies' bath and lower men's bath, both fed by the very cold spring water at Abnalls, a mile or so outside the city. By thermometer readings he had previously checked that this spring water was the coldest of any in the district. Floyer was by no means the first nor the last physician to support the use of plunge pools and cold baths for health, though the fad did not gain considerable traction until the eighteenth century. Between 1700 and 1770 the medical advice book market expanded steadily. The books often described modes of healthy living that, the authors claimed, would extend life expectancy. One of the many types of routine advocated was the cold regimen, which included spending time out of doors, eating cooling foods, takin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hogarth, William (1697-1764). Size of engraving: 28 x 23 cm. On strong paper. Published by W. Hogarth 1761."Hogarth's representation of the headdresses he imagined might have been worn at the coronation of George III and Queen Charlotte reflects a preoccupation with fashionable hairstyles documented by Walpole, who witnessed the ceremony. Walpole wrote to Conway (25 September 1761); "Some of the peeresses were dressed over night, slept in armchairs, and were waked if they tumbled their heads." Hogarth is also poking fun at antiquarians who believed that the beauty of a work of art could be explained by measurements and proportions. Hogarth includes portraits; in the fifth Order, to the far left, is a profile of Queen Charlotte." London: Jacob Tonson, 1697. London: Jacob Tonson. Fair with no dust jacket. 1697. Hardcover. Ex-library with a bookplate on the front pastedown, and a few library notations. Heavy wear and rubbing to 3/4 leather covers and marble boards. Front cover detached. Large chip from spine head. Front end page and frontis missing. Title page tattered and was long ago glued onto another paper, tipped in, and still has a few tears in it. Part of what is missing from the title page is the copyright date, but I have compared this title page with pictures of the 1697 edition and it matches. The first three pages after the title page have been repaired long ago along spine edge. The page titled "The Life of Pub. Virgilius Maro" is only attached by a couple of inches at the top. Pencil marks and notes in some margins. Numerous pages appear to have been edited in ink (pictures available). Heavy damp staining, age toning, foxing. Chips and tears, mostly at the spine tail corner, on many pages. Tears extend up into the text on some pages (the first page of the The Life of Pub. Virgilius Maro, and pages 303-306 seem to be the worst). Due to size and/or weight of the book I can only ship it domestic mail. A Little Store that's BIG on Service. Tracking on every package. ; Ex-Library .

FLOYER, John (Sir)
London: R, Clavel at the Peacock, 1697. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary calf, possibly rebacked at an early date, spine in compartments with spine label; some spotting, but overall a very good copy. One of the many types of routine advocated was the cold regimen, which included spending time out of doors, eating … [Click Below for Full Description]
