HOGARTH, William (1697-1764).
HOGARTH, William (1697-1764). Illustrations for Samuel Butler's 'Hudibras'. A Complete Set of Twelve Original Engravings On Seven large Sheets of Paper. Original copper engravings after Hogarth, re-worked & published by Thomas Cook, Paternoster Row, London, c.1800. 685 x 525 mm.The Illustrations for Samuel Butler's 'Hudibras' were Hogarth's first published set of original engravings being initially published in 1725. The publisher Thomas Cook produced his own engravings based on the prints by Hogarth. His intention was to make some of the sad faces look happier as this made them more appealing to customers at the time. Although these prints were produced before the Heath edition of 1822 it is important to point out that they are not produced from the original plates by Hogarth.Plate 1: Frontispiece and its Explanation.Plate 2: Sr. Hudibras his passing worth The manner how he sally'd forth.Plate 3: Hudibras's First Adventure.Plate 4: Hudibras, Catechiz'd.Plate 5: Hudibras, vanquish'd by Trussa.Plate 6: Hudibras, in Tribulation.Plate 7: Hudibras and the Lawyer.Plate 8: Hudibras beats Sidrophel and his man whacum.Plate 9: The Committee.Plate 10: Hudibras Triumphant.Plate 11: Burning the Rumps at Temple Bar.Plate 12: Hudibras Encounters the Skimmington.#2097988

Walter POPE
1697. [Christianity, Religion] ~ POPE, Walter The life of the Right Reverend Father in God seth, Lord Bishop of Salisbury, And Chancellor of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.. London. Printed for William Keblewhite, 1697. 8vo. [4], 193pp, [3]. With two terminal pages of publisher's advertisements. Without errata slip. Contemporary blind-ruled speckled calf, recently rebacked and recornered. Later armorial bookplate of Seth Ward to FEP, near contemporary inked initials to head of title-page, occasional pencilled highlighting, light spotting, minute worm-holes to margins. The first edition of Walter Pope's (c.1630-1714) biography of Seth Ward (1617-1689), English astronomer, philosopher and Anglican bishop, and the first Savilian professor to both subscribe to and teach Copernican theory whilst at Oxford. Pope, a long-standing confidant, is remarkably generous in his praise for Ward's accomplishments - to the extent that he claims, likely falsely, that his friend was an autodidact in the field of mathematics. Throughout Pope provides succinct biographies of notable scholars associated with Ward; these include the astronomer Lawrence Rooke (1619/20-1662), whom Ward taught whilst at Cambridge; and polymath Isaac Barrow (1630-1677), who held the Cambridge chairs of Greek, Geometry and Mathematics in the wake of the Restoration before passing each on to noteworthy successors - the latter to Isaac Newton. Four editions of this encyclopedia on the culture and history of the Near East were printed, the last being 1781-83. Atabey Sale, 563: "Herbelot spent the last thirty years of his life working on his Bibliothèque orientale, a landmark in Arabic studies which was unfinished at his death and completed and published two years later by the orientalist Antoine Galland in 1697. He knew a range of languages, including Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Aramaic, Syriac, and Hebrew, and was familiar with their literature and history, of which this work forms an encyclopaedia." A supplement compiled by Claude de Visdelou wasn't published until 1780. James Ford Bell Catalogue, cites the 1781-83 edition only. [Attributes: First Edition]

Autor(en) Evangelium infantiae.Verlag / Jahr 1697Sprache Gewicht ca. 500 gBestell-Nr 68850Bemerkungen Editio princeps of a popular Arabic text, here published together with the translation in Latin. A rare and curious work, presenting at the one hand a critical text-edition for the Arabic language-student, and at the other hand it is de facto the editio princeps of a manuscript, very popular in the Near and Far East, and containing an Arabic Evangely of the Youth of Christ, belonging to the so-called apocryphe bible literature. Compiled from older apocryphe evangelies, like the Proto-Evangely by Jacobi and the Thomas-Evangely, and enlarged with all sorts of Western religious legends, it was especially popular with the Christian heretic sect of the Nestorians or Chaldeans at Syria, Persia, and Egypt. It also spread to the far East, to China, India and Japan. The editor, Henricus Sike, came from Bremen in Germany, and at the time he was a student at the Utrecht University, where he made a great impression on Reeland, a.o. D Jones
London: R. Baldwin, 1697. First edition, small 8vo, pp. [14], 80, 80, 80, 64, 80, 110; contemporary paneled calf with tasteful modern rebacking and red morocco label on spine, extremities worn and boards a little splayed, but overall good and sound. Jones (fl. 1676-1720), a captain in the English Royal Regiment of Dragoons, spent much of his time on the continent, where he became fluent in modern languages and was appointed to serve the Marquis of Louvois. Jones published many works in his lifetime, but The Secret History is chief among them. It "consists of a series of letters purporting to have been written by Jones to an English peer between January 1676 and February 1689, and professes to divulge the secret diplomatic transactions that had passed between the English and French courts during the previous twenty years. Little reliance can, however, be placed on these pretensions" (DNB). Wing J934. [Attributes: First Edition]

Printed by the Assigns of Rich and Edw. Atkins Esquires; for Samuel Keble at the Turks-Head in Fleet-Street, and John Walthoe, i, 1697. Printed by the Assigns of Rich and Edw. Atkins Esquires; for Samuel Keble at the Turks-Head in Fleet-Street, and John Walthoe, in Vine-Court, Middle Temple. , 1697. Leather bound. Very good. Quarto, [unpaginated]. Contemporary leather, raised bands, decorative in-lays on covers. Bookplate from previous owner affixed to Page 6. Boldly signed by President James Buchanan on front title page in black in. This unique volume is from his legal library and one of the earliest signed presidential volumes available on the private market. The works of Edward Coke are considered the definitive writings on the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. He produced thirteen volumes of reports, three of which have been bound together here. These reports were used as precedence for voiding the Stamp Act of 1765 and writs of assistance, which led to the American Revolution. His works would go on to influence the third and fourth amendments of the constitution, which restricts the quartering of soldiers in private homes and guarantees against unreasonable search and seizures. Its no surprise that President Buchanan, a prominent lawyer from Pennsylvania, would have these books in his library.

Martin Johns; [and] George Kriebel; [and] George Dittrich; et al.
Handwritten Manuscript, Pennsylvania. 12mo. 215 pages. The binding measures 6 5/8 inches tall by about 4 1/4 inches wide. Housed in a modern custom-made cloth slipcase with burgundy silk moire pastedowns within. Hardcover bound in full leather with a ribbed spine and with rolls on the front and rear boards in blind. The binding is superbly preserved. All edges red. The hinges are sturdy and the leather is attractive and clean. Written in very neat old style German on both the rectos and the versos of the leaves. The pages have chain lines, and some of the pages show the lightly drawn ink lines for boarders for the text. Some of the capital letters in the text have some extra decorations (no color, and no images). There is a two-page Register at the front. There are 16 sections. Some of the text appears to be copies of letters, and some are a form of Catechism, written in question and answer format. There are dates within the text of 1697 to 1699, but the style of the binding is 18th century, and the paper also seems consistent with 18th century paper. ~ The book had belonged to Moravian Bishop Rondthaler of Winston-Salem. It does not have his signature in it, but it does have what looks like part of his trimmed calling card on which is printed "Rt. Rev. Edward Rondthaler, D.D. / Winston-Salem." There is an ink inscription on the front flyleaf dated 1851 which looks like "G(.?.) Kriebel / his Book June 11 (or "the"?) g / 1851." A name at the top of the first page of text is Martin Johns. Other names in the text are "Susana Dittrichen" (page 37 and 64); "George Dittrich" (pag … [Click Below for Full Description]

EVELYN, John
1697. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The long and prolixer beard was ever a mark of gravity and wisdom in men, but a woman with a hairy chin, was saluted as a monster, by a peal of stones at her." - John Evelyn, Numismata John Evelyn's 'Numismata' is one of the most important 17th-century books on numismatics, ancient coins, medals, collecting them, and identifying authentic and fakes. This 1697 first edition is illustrated with engravings of medals each with inscriptions and commentary on the figures. While the title of the works refers to both numismatics, which includes coins, the content of Evelyn's treatise focuses primarily on medals alone. This work though, takes a bizarre turn and covers more than just the study of medals. Evelyn writes about human physiognomy and the importance of the human face which appears on medals and coins. One rather odd section discusses the appearance of a beard on both a man and a woman! [Attributes: First Edition]
