Alessandro Dalla Via
Etching, 1697 circa, inscribed on banner: "PLUS ULTRA", at lower left: "GLI / ARGONA / UTI"; in basso a sinistra: "Lodouico Lamberti del: Alessandro Dalla Via Sc". Very good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, wide margings, in excellent condition. Frontispecie of the work "Teatro delle citta e porti principali dell’Europa, in pianta, in profilo, ed in elevatione, Descritte, e Publicate ad uso dell’Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti, Parte III dedicate all’altezza Serenissima Di Francesco Farnese Duca VII " by Vincenzo Coronelli, published in Venice in 1697. Francesco Maria LEVANTO (Attivo intorno al 1664)
Buchanan, James
1697. Printed by the Assigns of Rich and Edw. Atkins Esquires; for Samuel Keble at the Turks-Head in Fleet-Street, and John Walthoe, in Vine-Court, Middle Temple. 1697. Leather bound. Quarto, [unpaginated]. Contemporary leather, raised bands, decorative in-lays on covers. Bookplate from previous owner affixed to Page 6. Boldly signed by President James Buchanan on front title page in black in. This unique volume is from his legal library and one of the earliest signed presidential volumes available on the private market. Very good. Item #1010 The works of Edward Coke are considered the definitive writings on the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. He produced thirteen volumes of reports, three of which have been bound together here. These reports were used as precedence for voiding the Stamp Act of 1765 and writs of assistance, which led to the American Revolution. His works would go on to influence the third and fourth amendments of the constitution, which restricts the quartering of soldiers in private homes and guarantees against unreasonable search and seizures. Its no surprise that President Buchanan, a prominent lawyer from Pennsylvania, would have these books in his library. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

"from the moseley family library" pages clean binding tight. 1697 Theosophical Transactions by the Philadelphian Society. No. 1-5. complete bound set of all fiveFor the Advancement of Piety, and Divine Philosophy, The Theosophical Transactions, or Acta Philadelphica, were a series of five small memoirs published by the Philadelphian Society between March and November 1697. Edited by leaders of the group, Richard Roach and Francis Lee, they were intended to be circulated amongst members to inform them of religious occurrences and newly published works. They were published in London and sold for one shilling. Surviving copies of the Transactions in England are rare; the Bodleian Library in Oxford only has the first of the five memoirs, while the British Library has a complete bound set of all five. In America copies survive in numerous places including the libraries of Harvard University, Oakland University and the University of Texas. The content of these five works varied considerably, here is a summary of just volume one: In it stories relayed to members included an account of a 'Black Bituminous Vapour' in France which 'arose out of the Earth, and did considerable Mischief'. This vapour destroyed fields, trees and 12 houses, but apparently passed over people if they laid on the ground. Elsewhere, in Germany a respected gentleman was awoken by a 'little man' and given the key to treasure hidden in a mountain (only to lose the key and face divine pu … [Click Below for Full Description]

EVELYN, John
London: Tooke, 1697. 1697 1st ed Evelyn Numismata Illustrated Medals Coins Physiognomy Numismatics"The long and prolixer beard was ever a mark of gravity and wisdom in men, but a woman with a hairy chin, was saluted as a monster, by a peal of stones at her." - John Evelyn, NumismataJohn Evelyn's 'Numismata' is one of the most important 17th-century books on numismatics, ancient coins, medals, collecting them, and identifying authentic and fakes. This 1697 first edition is illustrated with engravings of medals each with inscriptions and commentary on the figures. While the title of the works refers to both numismatics, which includes coins, the content of Evelyn's treatise focuses primarily on medals alone. This work though, takes a bizarre turn and covers more than just the study of medals. Evelyn writes about human physiognomy and the importance of the human face which appears on medals and coins. One rather odd section discusses the appearance of a beard on both a man and a woman! ASTELL, Mary] "A Lover of her Sex"
T. W. for R. Wilkin, 1697. Third Edition, First edition. Hardcover. 12mo, 120pp.; 298pp., plus advertising leaf at rear. A good copy only, lacking pp. 9-16 in the "Introduction" to Part II. Entirely unrestored, bound in contemporary full calf with black morocco spine label and gilt title. Outer joints thinly cracked, but holding, general wear to extremities, and backstrip chipped at the base (not hideously). Near-contemporary owner's name to title page of part I, and a few ink notations to front endpapers, noting this as a "scarce" title (the ink and hand suggest this notation pre-dates the late 19th century). This bound volume joins together the third edition of Part I and the first edition of Part II. Mary Astell, a minimally educated English woman often credited as the "first English feminist," herein lays out her proposal to improve the economic and social prospects of womankind, a proposal that was to some extent ignored and to another extent ridiculed at the time by the male thinkers of her day. Known to libraries, but scarce in commerce. This copy unfortunately incomplete with the four missing leaves from the Introduciton to Part II. Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

BAYLE, Pierre.
Rotterdam: chez Reinier Leers, 1697. 2 volumes, folio (363 x 231 mm). Contemporary calf, rebacked a little crudely preserving most of the original spine, endpapers laid down. Calf scuffed, contents generally clean with sporadic fox marks and faint staining, some minor worming without loss to text. A good copy. Engraved vignette to title pages, historiated capitals and tailpieces. First edition of Bayle's dictionary, which bore a tremendous influence on the Age of Enlightenment and its emblematic Encyclopédie, one of 2,000 copies printed. French Protestant Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) wrote his Dictionnaire while on self-imposed exile in Rotterdam as an "anti-clerical counterblast to Moreri's [Le Grand Dictionnaire historique, 1674], in order, as he put it, 'to rectify Moreri's mistakes and fill the gaps'. Bayle championed reason against belief, philosophy against religion, tolerance against superstition" (PMM). The work's elegant typography was designed by Bayle himself. Described by En français dans le texte as no less than superb, it innovatively relies on an army of shoulder- and footnotes to convey the crux of Bayle's argument. The dictionary contains some 2,000 entries, including mostly biographies of religious and historical figures as well as writers, in the latter case focusing on the 16th and 17th centuries, but also articles on geography. The views he expressed in his detailed Life of Mahomet, which, in radical opposition with the opinion of the Church, "stresses the superior tolerance and rationality of Islam's core teaching" (Israel), were reasserted more than 60 ye … [Click Below for Full Description]

ASTELL, Mary] "A Lover of her Sex"
London: T. W. for R. Wilkin, 1697. Third Edition, First edition. Hardcover. Good.

The Mourning Bride is a tragedy written by British playwright William Congreve. It premiered in 1697 at Betterton's Co., Lincoln's Inn Fields. The play centres on Zara, a queen held captive by Manuel, King of Granada, and a web of love and deception which results in the mistaken murder of Manuel who is in disguise, and Zara's also mistaken suicide in response. There are two very widely known quotations in the play; from the opening to the play: Music has charms to soothe a savage breast, The word "breast" is often misquoted as "beast" and "has" sometimes appears as "hath". Also often repeated is a quotation of Zara in Act III, Scene VIII: Heav'n has no rage, like love to hatred turn'd, Nor hell a fury, like a woman scorn'd. This is usually paraphrased as "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." --- Wikipedia
