Casas, Bartolome de las
Chez André Pralard, ruë Saint Jacques, à l'Occasion, A Paris, 1697. First French edition. Engraved frontispiece by Pierre Giffart, depicting Hernán Cortés collecting the treasures of the New World. Woodcut device on the title page. In later black half leather, with gilt title on spine. Marbled endpapers. [2 (engraved frontispiece)], [10], 382, [2] p. First French edition of las Casas' chronicle of the first decades of colonization of the Americas. Bartolomé de las Casas (1484-1566) was a Spanish colonist, Dominican missionary and an early historian of the Spanish colonization of the Americas. He was among the firsts who expose the oppression of the Indians and call for the abolition of slavery. Las Casas arrived as one of the first European settlers in the Americas, and initially participated in the Conquista and the abuses against the Indians, but eventually, he became an advocator of the rights of the natives. He was the first officially appointed Protector of the Indians, and in 1544 became the Bishop of Chiapas in Guatemala. Las Casas is considered to be one of the first advocates for a universal conception of human rights. La decouverte des Indes Occidentales is an abbreviated translation by abbé (Jean-Baptiste Morvan) de Bellegarde of the 1552 book, Brevissima relacion de la destruycion de las Indias (A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies), in which Las Casas detailed the mistreatment of the indigenous peoples. Sabin 11273. With small wormholes throughout the book at the lower edge of the margin, no effect on the text. Pages slightly yellowed. Overall in fi … [Click Below for Full Description]

(PENITENTIAL PSALMS). [RANCÉ, Armand-Jean-Baptiste Le Bouthillier de, Abbot of La Trappe].
[Northern France/Flanders], 1697. Manuscript on paper, 8vo (156 × 100 mm), pp. [90], plus a parchment flyleaf at front and rear. Title with gouache vignette with traces of silver ink (now oxidised to black), justification ruled in red throughout, an engraved plate depicting King David and his harp pasted to the verso of the second title. Light marginal thumbing. Contemporary red goatskin, panelled in gilt, spine with five raised bands, gilt edges. Slightly rubbed, preserved in a modern black morocco slipcase by Riviere. First vellum flyleaf with early inscription: 'Ex libris: D[omi]ni praepositi ecclesiae s[anc]ti Petri insulis'. An interesting seventeenth-century manuscript of the Seven Penitential Psalms. The Latin psalms (6, 31, 37, 50, 101, 129, and 142) are presented in the ruled margins, while the central text is that of the French paraphrases attributed to the Abbé de Rancé (1626-1700), recent founder of the monastery of La Trappe. His paraphrases were included in his posthumous collected works, but we have been unable to find them in any pre-1700 publication, suggesting they circulated in manuscript only at the time this little manuscript was made. The title bears an attractive coloured vignette illustrating a passage from psalm 140: 'Que ma priére s'élève vers vous, comme la fumée de l'encens du matin: que l'élévation des mes mains vous soit aussi agréable que le sacrifice du soir'. The second title verso bears an attractive contemporary print, enclosed within red ruled lines and part of the intended design of the manuscript. The early inscription locates the manu … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEVANTO FRANCESCO MARIA/CORONELLI VINCENZO MARIA.
1697. Incisione in rame, mm 405x510, colorata. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Aguirre, Pedro, Antonio de
Mexico City: Juan Joseph Guilleno Carrasco, 1697. Very good.. [11],10 leaves. Small quarto. Dbd. Very light wear at edges. Small patch of worming at top edge, occasionally affecting text. Partial marca de fuego at bottom edge. Light tanning and foxing. Sole edition of this late 17th-century sermon on the subjects of the Virgin Mary and the Immaculate Conception, delivered at the Capuchin women's convent in Mexico City on the feast day of the Immaculate Conception, 8 December, 1696, and published the following year. Aguirre begins by saying that the joy of the occasion has been spoiled by the almost simultaneious deaths of Dr. Bernabe Diaz de Cordova y Murillo who was to have sung the mass and of Fr. Balthasar de Medina, who was to have preached. The overall message of the sermon addresses the relationship of the conception to original sin and death in Catholic thought. With an attractive title-page composed of several different text styles and a handful of woodcut ornaments within a woodcut border. We locate six copies of this rare Mexican imprint -- at St. Bonaventure, the University of Dayton, Indiana University, NYPL, JCB, and the National Library of Chile. Medina, Mexico 1660. Palau 3946.

North and South America - Carolus Allard, c. 1697
1697. NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD "Recentissima Novi Orbis Sive Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Tabula". Copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Carolus Allard c. 1697. Original hand colouring, heightened with gold. Rare map of North and South America, the first to show important corrections to the mapping of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Valley. The cartouche is especially attractive, with an allegorical figure of America seated within a sugar cane field inhabited by exotic animals and scenes relating to mankind's eternal search for gold. Allard's map includes one of the boldest depictions of the myth of Terra Esonis, a land bridge extending from Japan to the Straits of Anian, here with over a dozen place names and only a small strait on either side. We see a beautiful example of California as an Island, based upon Nicholas Sanson's second projection. The open ended Great Lakes and primitive early treatment of the Mississippi River are also noteworthy, as is the early Rio Colorado, extending to a lake in Apachas and Navaio regions of the Southwest, and mistakenly referencing Taos and Xila, indicating a confusion with the Rio Grande regarding the Taos reference. The interior of South America includes tribal vignettes in Brazil and a misprojected, overly wide projection of the continent. An further interesting aspect of the map is the depiction of early Australia. Quiri Regio, the Northern parts of what would become Australia, are also well delineated, showing what would become Carpentaria, the Gulf of Carpentaria and Arnhem Land. 'A New Voyage Round the World' is an extensive travel work, documenting the scientifically minded ex-pirate Williams Dampier's journey around the world. Dampier made note of much during his travels, which results in an incredibly rich read, looking to not only the customs and habits of different countries, but on the local horticulture, animal life, and rivers and geography. As a result, this work is a fascinating look into the seventeenth century world. The tour described in this work took twelve years. Dampier was the first Englishman to map parts of Australia and New Guinea. Dampier was penniless when he returned from England after his first circumnavigation, but he had all of this journals. This work was very popular when it was published, and went though at least three editions … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
