James Tyrrell
LONDON : W Rogers, F Harris, R Knaplock, A Bell, and T Cockerill, 1697 An exceptionally rare original copy of James Tyrrell's historical work. Tyrrell (1642-1718) was an author and Whig philosopher, and a close friend of John Locke. He intended his history to stretch to William III. In reality, he spent so much time on the detail of each reign that he only succeeded in reaching Richard II by the end of Volume III - his final volume. This set is Volumes I and II. Volume I covers 'the earliest accounts of time' up to the Battle of Hastings. Volume II covers William I to Henry III. In contemporary full leather binding with a blind stamped decorative border to the boards, raised bands and gilt tooling to the spine, red title labels and gilt decoration to board edges. Vol I has a frontispiece, title page, Dedication to Thomas, Earl of Pembroke (i-iv), preface to the reader (v-xxviii), general introduction (xxix-cxxviii), table to the preface and introduction (cxxix-cxxxvi) and text in 6 books. The page numbering is a little odd in that Books I-V are paginated 1-355 and Book VI is paginated separately - 1-116.It includes 5 fold out charts covering Tables of Succession. There is also an alphabetical table/index at the rear (i-xci). Volume II has title page dated 1700, dedication to William III (i-iv), Preface to the Reader (v-xxix), Introduction (xxx-cxxxv), table to the preface and introduction (6pp), catalogue of authors (3pp), text in 8 books (pp1-1119), advertisement to the reader (p1120), Appendix (1-36) and Index (57 pp), and finally errata, corrigenda and delend … [Click Below for Full Description]

[ERICUS, Johannes Petrus]
Venice:: Francesco Tramontini for the author,, 1697. 4to. 4to in 8s (215 x 152 mm). [16], 184, [2] pp. Title in red and black, 8 etched illustrations including title vignette, 5 by Gio. Palazzi, one etched and several woodcut tailpieces. A few upper corners creased in quires E & F, else fine. Early 19th-century English half calf and marbled boards (rubbed, upper joint split). Provenance: Earls of Macclesfield (bookplate, blindstamps). ***& & ONLY EDITION of an eccentric and little-known treatise of comparative etymology, embellished with etched vignette illustrations. Ericus attempted in this work to prove that all languages trace their origins to Greek. Professor of philology and geography at Padua, Ericus (or Erich) was a native of Eisenach in Thuringia, as noted in his other important work on language (see below). Little is known of his life, and he is mentioned in none of the relevant bibliographies or biographical dictionaries. Only Leibniz paid him notice, having met him in Venice in 1697 and been impressed by his linguistic researches; he mentions him several times in his letters, and discusses the present work at length in the Epistolica de historia etymologica dissertatio of 1717. While rejecting most of Ericus' conclusions, Leibniz praised the thoroughness of his efforts to penetrate the origins of languages, which few etymologists had attempted.& & Even for his time, Ericus’ erudition is undeniable; in the present work he compares the syntax, morphology, phonology, semantics and metrical systems of Latin, Greek, Hebrew, English, Dutch, French, Italian, S … [Click Below for Full Description]

PERI, Giovanni Domenico (1564-1639). -
Venezia, Hertz, 1697.4 picc. Peri was a rich and learned merchant who based this work primarily on his own experience. «It is a technical handbook for merchants, to teach them trading and book-keeping... It contains also interesting historical notices on the exchanges between the principal Italian and foreign cities... Peri demonstrates the importance of merchants (and) treats also of mercantile contracts... The work is still interesting, especially for the history of the mercantile customs of those times» (Palgrave III, 94). Some occasional light foxing, but a good copy in contemp. vellum (hinges weak).

Felibien Andre'.
Cm. 24, pp. (24) 542.

Dryden] Decimus Junius Juvenalis; Aulus Persius Flaccus
London: Jacob Tonson, 1697. Early issue. Adorned with sculptures, being a frontispiece, sixteen finely engraved copper plates by Hollar to illustrate each of the Satires and one additional engraved bust of Persius. Also with engraved half-titles to each of the Satires. 8vo, contemporary full speckled calf, sometime lont ago rebacked to period style with the spine featuring gilt ruled raised bands, one compartment with a dark green morocco label lettered and ruled in gilt, endleaves renewed. xo, 501, [3] pp. A well preserved copy. Some minor toning or foxing, more so to the title and frontispiece, binding with some normal age evidence. AN IMPORTANT TRANSLATION OF ONE OF THE GREAT CLASSICAL TEXTS. Jacob Tonson published The Satires of Decimus Junius Juvenalis and Aulus Persius Flaccus originally in 1693. Tonson assembled this complete translation of Juvenal's Satires by "various hands", but numbers 1, 3, 6, 10, and 16 were all done by Dryden himself. Number 7 was done by his son Charles, and 14 by his son John. The complete translation of Persius is by Dryden alone, and Dryden also wrote the substantial preface, the "Discourse concerning the original and progress of satire", in which he explains the history of the genre and gives a critique of its principal Latin practitioners. He also provides reflections on its modern use. While the sixteen Satires are translations rather than imitations, and generally preserved the original Roman allusions, there are a number of turns of phrase which reflect satirically upon William III. Doubtless both the tragic pessim … [Click Below for Full Description]

Written by La Salle's lieutenant, Tonti, who had entered Louis XIV's service as a cadet in 1668, "serving in several Mediterranean campaigns and losing his right hand in battle. To mitigate the difficulties caused by the loss of his hand, Tonti fitted himself with an artificial hand made either of iron, copper, or silver, which may have been articulated. La Salle noted that Tonti could accomplish tasks that required the use of two free arms. Tonty sometimes used his metal hand as an instrument of diplomacy with Indians, who throughout the Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes knew him as "the man with the iron hand." Unable to obtain further royal patronage at the end of the Dutch wars, Tonti became the chief lieutenant of La Salle, who had been granted permission to explore the Mississippi and exploit its resources. As La Salle's lieutenant, Tonti achieved many firsts in the European exploration and settlement of the North American interior. During the winter of 1678-1679, Tonti supervised construction of the Griffon, the first sailing vessel on the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Etherege, Sir George
London: Printed by T. Warren for Henry Herringman, and are to be Sold by J. Tonson, F. Saunders, T. Bennet, and K.Bentley, 1697 1634?-1691 Quarto, 8.75 x 6.5 inches. Seventh edition. This play first appeared 1664. A-I4, K2. This is a good copy, in boards. The first work of Etherege was The Comical Revenge, or Love in a Tub. It was published in 1664 and may have been produced for the first time late in the previous year. This comedy was an immediate success and Etherege found himself, in a night, famous. Thus introduced to the wits and the fops of the town, Etherege took his place in the select and dissolute circle of Rochester, Dorset and Sedley. On one occasion, at Epsom, after tossing in a blanket certain fiddlers who refused to play, Rochester, Etherege and other boon companions so "skirmished the watch" that they left one of their number thrust through with a pike and were fain to abscond. Etherege married a fortune, it is not certain when, and, apparently for no better reason, was knighted. On the death of Rochester, he was, for some time, the "protector" of the beautiful and talented actress, Mrs. Barry.ˇ63ˇ Ever indolent and procrastinating, Etherege allowed four years to elapse before his next venture into comedy. She Would if She Could, 1668. "The reputation of Sir George Etherege has risen considerably in the present century, and although there is now some danger of his being given an importance that he would have been the first to disown, he undoubtedly stamped his own unemphatic image on the Restoration theater. The comic world of his … [Click Below for Full Description]
