One of the books published during the debate on the recoinage of the English currency at the end of the 17th century in which Locke played such an important part in rejecting devaluation. John Locke?s contention that the old standard should be maintained was chiefly based upon his ?commodity theory? of money ? he regarded money as representing nothing but a quantity of silver. Hodges disagrees with Locke and argues for the raising of the value of money, together with calling in all the ?plate of the kingdom? to be melted down for coin. Schumpeter identifies that in this book Hodges explicitly recognises the fact that a policy aiming at persistent export surpluses must defeat itself through the rise in domestic prices that it would eventually produce. Hodges published a supplement to this work in 1698.

Evangelium infantiae.
1697. . Editio princeps of a popular Arabic text, here published together with the translation in Latin. A rare and curious work, presenting at the one hand a critical text-edition for the Arabic language-student, and at the other hand it is de facto the editio princeps of a manuscript, very popular in the Near and Far East, and containing an Arabic Evangely of the Youth of Christ, belonging to the so-called apocryphe bible literature. Compiled from older apocryphe evangelies, like the Proto-Evangely by Jacobi and the Thomas-Evangely, and enlarged with all sorts of Western religious legends, it was especially popular with the Christian heretic sect of the Nestorians or Chaldeans at Syria, Persia, and Egypt. It also spread to the far East, to China, India and Japan. The editor, Henricus Sike, came from Bremen in Germany, and at the time he was a student at the Utrecht University, where he made a great impression on Reeland, a.o. Later he became professor in Hebrew at Cambridge, in England.- Our copy without title.

Katib Chelebi (Hajji Khalifah).
Venice, Andrea Poletti, 1697.. 4to. (8), 206 pp., final blank f. With woodcut printer's device on t. p. Contemp. vellum with ms. title to spine.. First Italian edition of the "Taqwim al-Tawarikh", an annalistic chronicle from the creation of Man to the year 1648, when it was composed by the famous Turkish polymath Katib Chelebi (1609-57). This is, at the same time, the first printing of any work of Katib Chelebi's in any language: the chronicle was not published in the original mixture of Persian and Ottoman Turkish until 1733, by Müteferrika. "[T]he work originated as an excerpt of [Chelebi's previous effort,] 'Fazlakat aqwal al-ahyar', but continued up to Chelebi's own time [...] Becoming highly popular as an easy reference work, it was continued after Chelebi's death by several authors, including Hüseyin Hezarfenn, Seyhi, and Ibrahim Müteferrika, who published it as the twelfth product of his press [...] Equally popular in Europe as a reference work, it was translated into Latin, Italian, and French. Today, the afterword is the main part of interest, as it contains a brief discussion of the regularities or laws of history, and an initial elaboration of his ideas of causation in history, which are later copies by Na'ima (d. 1128/1716) in his theoretical discussion" (Kafadar, Karateke, Fleischer: Historians of the Ottoman Emprire, s.v.). - Slight worming to upper gutter; binding restored at top edge. Contemp. Italian ownership to title page. - Not a single copy in auction records since 1950. - Babinger, GOW, 197. OCLC 563174142, 457543094.

Fine.

(which, according to common computation, is 5190 years) and from thence down to the present year 1697. Being a collection of the most remarkable instances of uncleanness, that are to be found in sacred or prophane history during that time. With observations thereon. Vol. I. [all published]. London: printed for Richard Baldwin, at the Oxford Arms in Warwick-Lane. 1697. 8vo. [24],318p. With first and final blank leaves. With table of contents and errata. Rebound in full brown morocco, lettered in gilt, by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. A fine, clean, wide-margined copy. Sole edition. Wing E3296A L, OC; CLC, WF, WSG, Y. An extraordinarily industrious and exhaustive compilation with innumerable instances, in addition to whoring, adultery, polygamy, incest, bestiality, buggery, sodomy, fetishism, paedophilia, and with digressions on gluttony, excessive wine consumption, over-furnishing of houses, gnosticks, games and plays in the theatres: in all an encyclopaedia of mainly sexual misbehaviour provided with a copious index. The antics of the Emperor Tiberius provide plenty of text: "After this Tiberius retir'd to Caprae. There he invented alcoves, which he furnish'd with whores, and catamites, and lewd discoverers of unnatural and beastly postures and motions. He entertained himself by seeing them in three several rows abusing each other, thereby to excite his decay'd appetite. He provided himself with filthy pictures and infamous statues, and furnish'd them with the abominable books of Elephantis, that if any one had a mind to be prodigiously wicked, he might not want a pattern to sin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: par la Compagnie des Libraires, 1697. First edition, folio, pp. [32], 1059, [1]; title page printed in red and black, woodcut ornaments and initials; full contemporary calf, gilt-decorated spine in 7 compartments, red morocco label in 1; edeges a little worn, a few minor tears and dampstains in the text, but in all, a very good, sound copy. Manuscript inscription at the top of the title page reads: "Monasterii S. Germani a pratis Congregationis S. Maun: 1698." Four editions of this encyclopedia on the culture and history of the Near East were printed, the last being 1781-83. Atabey Sale, 563: "Herbelot spent the last thirty years of his life working on his Bibliothèque orientale, a landmark in Arabic studies which was unfinished at his death and completed and published two years later by the orientalist Antoine Galland in 1697. He knew a range of languages, including Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Aramaic, Syriac, and Hebrew, and was familiar with their literature and history, of which this work forms an encyclopaedia." A supplement compiled by Claude de Visdelou wasn't published until 1780. James Ford Bell Catalogue, cites the 1781-83 edition only. [Attributes: First Edition]

Bristol: H. Hammond, 1697. 8vo (17.8 cm, 7"). [32], 399, [3] pp. (map lacking). First edition: a wealth of case studies of men, women, and children afflicted by such ailments as Wand'ring Scorbutical Gout, Arthritick Pains, Spina Ventosa, Dead-Palsie, etc., along with => historical information about both the city of Bath and water cures in general. Dr. Pierce (b. ca. 1622, d. 1710) was one of the most prominent Bath physicians of the day; he specialized in supervising mineral water cures, both by drinking and by bathing. Both parts of his Memoirs (the second has a separate title-page but contiguous pagination) are present here, including => a chapter dedicated specifically to women's gynecological ailments including "green sickness" and "virgin distemper"; the final errata leaf is also present. In describing Pierce's accomplishments, specifically the present work, the DNB calls him "probably the first English writer to note the now well-known occurrence of acute rheumatism as a sequel to scarlet fever; and his account of Major Arnot's case [pp. 44–46 here], in which muscular feebleness of the arm followed the constant carrying of a heavy falcon on one fist, is the first suggestion of the condition later described as ‘repetitive strain syndrome.' He carried out post-mortem examinations on some patients, one of which was on the body of Sir Robert Craven, who had a mediastinal tumour; and another on a man with osteomyelitis of the hip. => These original observations entitle him to a high place among English physicians. [Click Below for Full Description]
