Part II has a separate heading 'A treatise of Hawking and Falconry', the charming engraved folding plate shows a falconer with 7 falcons and falconer's equipment and comprises 91 pages. Virgil, John Dryden
London : Jacob Tonson, 1697 A good copy in contemporary full leather binding with frontispiece, title page in red and black inks, and 91 (of 101) full page engravings. This is the first illustrated edition of Dryden's famous translations of Virgil's works completed in 1696. The illustrations are spectacular - each dedicated to a subscriber who donated 5 guineas for the privilege. With frontispiece by M Vander Gucht (a flemish engraver working in England); title page; dedication to the Right Hon Lord Clifford 4pp; Life of Vergil 16pp; Preface to the Pastorals 12pp; Poems to Dryden 6pp; Lists of Subscribers [which also provide a plate index] 4pp; plate and text to Pastorals p 1-48; Dedication to Earl of Chesterfield 5pp; Essay on the Georgics 6pp; Georgics pp 49-147; Dedication (45pp); Aeneispp 201-619; Postscript to the Reader p621-623; Notes and Observations p625-640. The pagination between Georgics and Aeneis is odd in that the page numbers stop with Georgics and restart with Aeneis; the dedication is not paginated and the 'gap' is bigger than it should be (by about 10 pp). However, no content is missing from any of the sections listed. The contemporary panelled calf binding has been extensively repaired at some time, relaying what could be saved of the original calf to both boards and spine. The binding is in good condition. Internally there is a small ink signature of Jasper Radcliffe Cook to the top of the title page. There is a little worming to the bottom margin (not affecting text) which is noticeable from the title page to part way through the preface but is then a … [Click Below for Full Description]

FURETIERE (Antoine)
Amsterdam, Henri Desbordes, 1697.. John Pollexfen (1636-1715), a successful merchant and economist, served on numerous government bodies, his most important appointment being to the Board of Trade from 1696 to 1707. The Discourse is a "complete exposition of his views on trade and money" (Palgrave.) "Pollexfen's economic writings were a by-product of his public career... Although Pollexfen did recommend that bonds and bills be assignable, he devoted much space to asserting the importance of retaining physical coin and denouncing the expanded role of paper money. Like Locke, he thought that silver had an innate value and that the standard of coin must be invariable. He regarded labour as the sole source of wealth and accordingly supported immigration. He recognized the importance of the domestic trade, which he wished to free from restrictions. DELLON, Gabriel.
Amsterdam, Pieter Mortier, 1697.Sm.8vo. Contemporary vellum. With engraved title-vignette, 3 engraved vignettes and 6 engraved plates (3 folding). (12),282,(17) pp.First Dutch edition; first published in French in Leiden in 1687: Relation de l'inquisition de Goa. - In 1668 Dellon sailed to India with the Compagnie des Indes. He travelled extensively along the Malabar coast. In 1673 he left the employment of the company and started a private medical practice in Damao, at that time a Portuguese colony. Six months later, early in 1674, he was arrested by the Inquisition and taken to Goa, where he was imprisoned for two years. He was then shipped to Lisbon, but released in the following year on condition that he should return immediately to France. .. It proved a considerable success , particularly in Protestant Europe, where it ran to numerous editions. Although long regarded purely as a work of propaganda, recent research has testified to its accuracy (Howgego p.304/305). ' Dellon's description of the Inquisition and of the practices of its officials and their collaborators is the only source available on the functioning of that institution by a cemtemporary who saw it from the inside' (Lach, Asia in the making of Europe III,2, p.851). It includes also details of his stay in Bahia, Brazil. His account of the Inquisition was still forbidden in Portugal in 1769. - A nice copy.Cf. Borba de Moraes I, p.253-255; Sabin 19444-19447.

[Tonti, Henry de]:
Paris. 1697.. Paris. 1697.. [4],333,[21]pp. including the leaf of privilege and three leaves of publishers' ads. Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt with leather label. Modern bookplate on rear pastedown. Very minor foxing and soiling. Very good. This work is generally considered the most reliable account of La Salle's last expedition, describing events from 1678 to 1691, particularly the fatal attempt to establish a colony in Texas and the explorations along the Gulf coast of Texas and Louisiana from 1685 until La Salle's murder in 1687. Tonti spent some time among the Indians of Louisiana and Texas, and accounts of those tribes are included as well. He later denied authorship of this book, but existing manuscripts suggest it was either written by him or compiled from his letters. A decade after La Salle's death, his many powerful enemies still provided incentive for the use of caution. This is the first issue of this work, including the account of pearl fishing in the Gulf of Mexico which appears on pages 185- 88. Those leaves were suppressed by the French government, and most copies have cancel leaves, easily recognizable because they are in smaller type, and of course omitting the reference to pearl fishing. A most important work for the French exploration of the Gulf Coast, Louisiana, Texas, and the Mississippi. HOWES T294, "c." STREETER SALE 105. GREENLY, MICHIGAN 7. WAGNER SPANISH SOUTHWEST 67. First edition of Guglielmini's account of his experimental studies of rivers.Domenico Guglielmini (1655-1710) was a native of Bologna. He studied mathematics and medicine at the university, where he went on to teach mathematics from 1690. He was simultaneously appointed Superintendent of Water for the city, and made detailed studies of hydraulics, which led to the writing and publication of the present work, his most important. The year after its publication he was appointed professor of mathematics at Padua and left off the study of hydraulics definitively when later appointed to the chair of medicine.'Guglielmini's major work and one of the most important hydraulic works of its time, "The Nature of Rivers" numbers among works by Castelli and Barattieri. Gamba has praised this work not only for its classical hydraulics, but for the clarity of Guglielmini's verbal and mathematical expression.'His approach to hydraulics was through extensive field observation, and his concepts "were essential links in the ever-strengthening chain of flow principles ..." He was the first to indicate the existence of resistance laws, though he was unable to express it quantitatively. - Rouse & Ince, History of … [Click Below for Full Description]
