London: Printed for Abel Roper 12mo (16 cm; 6.25"). [8], 112, [12] pp.. 1697 Third edition in English, but the first with this title. Originally published in Paris, 1680 as Les cérémonies nuptiales de toutes les nations, it was first published in English in 1685 as Nuptial rites, of which ESTC locates only the British Library copy, and a second time in 1687 with the title changed to Matrimonial customs, of which ESTC locates only the copies at the British Library, Oxford, Ohio State, and UCLA's Clark Library. The title-page of a 1698 edition takes it on to note that the work is "very diverting, especially to the ladies," and later printings also telegraph what might be called its "extra-educational" pleasures. While the Irish and Scots are discussed, the English and Welsh are not. Commentary on the rest of the world is surprisingly inclusive: China, Japan, Maluccas, Maldives, Syria, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Florida, the Caribbean, Cuba, Colombia, India, and so on. Some attention is paid to a few religions or sects — Catholics, Calvinists, Lutherans, Moors, the Druses — and an index entry points to the "Negroes" of "Serrelionia." Having previously noted the paucity of reported copies of the first and second editions, we note that searches of NUC, WorldCat, ESTC, and COPAC locate only seven copies of this edition in U.S. libraries and two in British. Recent quarter red morocco. Foxing and age-toning, yet clean, pleasant, and strong; a good, complete copy.

HENNEPIN Louis (1626-1705)

Book 12mo,14.3x 7.5cm. engraved half-title frontis, 2 large folding maps & 2folding plates, in full contemporary style calf by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, blind ruled raised bands, gilt titles and blind decorations in the panels, gilt-ruled inner dentelles, original blanks leaves preserved, a fine clean copy. (cgc) T.P.L. 83; Lande 423; Sabin 31349;Church 762; The First Edition of this account of Hennepin's travels in what is now the United States and Canada. His work forms one of the most important volumes in the early history of North America. Following upon the discovery of the Mississippi by Marquei and Joliet, La Salle set out in 1678 to open up this fertile basin. The chronicler of his expedition was Father Louis Hennepin, who explored the upper reaches of the Mississippi while La Salle was retracing his way to raise funds for renewing his voyage, after its disastrous experience on the Illinois River. Hennepin may have touched the site of the future city of Minneapolis. His work forms one of the most important volumes in the early history of North America. He lived for eleven years on this continent and penetrated farther into the then unknown interior than anyone before him. He was the discoverer and explorer of the upper reaches of the Mississippi and the first to describe Niagara Falls, exaggerating their height, however to above 600 feet. He tells of the building of the new Fort Creve coeur which was named by the Indians Checagou (Chicago), describes Fort Frontenac and the Great … [Click Below for Full Description]

D., A
By A.D. of Greys-Inn, Esq; and some others his friends. This was 'A.D.'s' complex scheme for procuring a significant increase in money supply to William III. It involved the issue of paper credit on the basis of capitalised taxes and the replacement of coin by local banks, the paper notes becoming legal tender. The proposal assured the King an annual revenue of 2 million pounds sterling for 6 or 7 years, the final capital sum to amount to some 12 or 14 millions. The scheme invited Parliament to establish "one General National Office of Credit at the Guildhall in London, with divers inferiour offices, one in every ward in the City ... [and] every great Market town" (p.6). These were to issue legal tender notes. Mention was made of the facility which they would create for moving money throughout the Kingdom, and also of their value as an investment for the City orphans, "as likewise to Decay'd Gentlemen of the Clergy ..." (p.41). Provisions were made for advances against plate, bullion, lands or goods.4to., 23 + (1)pp., including the supplement, title-page dusty, final leaf (verso blank) worn with perforations just affecting a single letter of the word 'Finis', a large, uncut, copy well bound in recent, but old-style, quarter calf over marbled boards., 1697. [VOC] YK, Cornelius van
Amsterdam: Andries Voorstad for Jan ten Hoorn, 1697. Quarto, with engraved title page and 21 plates (of which 13 are double-page); fine in contemporary Dutch vellum, spine skilfully lettered in ink. Building the ships of Pelsaert, Tasman and de Vlamingh: the great VOC manual. One of the great seventeenth-century shipbuilding manuals, and the first published in Dutch by a practising shipwright. This richly illustrated book is a remarkable companion to the extraordinary maritime history of the VOC and the Dutch voyagers in general, showing the manner in which the vessels sailed by Pelsaert, Tasman and de Vlamingh were built. As the wealth of the VOC grew throughout the seventeenth century, Dutch shipbuilding thrived and won widespread acclaim (indeed, even the Czar Peter the Great was drawn to the Netherlands to witness the craft first-hand).Shipbuilding was a closed art, typically handed from father to son, and early printed descriptions of the construction process are scarce. When merchants and guildsmen of the VOC commissioned ocean-going vessels, details of the hull and design were typically left to the experience of the shipwright; as a direct result 'no construction draughts exist of seventeenth-century Dutch ships. The only tangible thing which did remain of the methods followed are the building contracts' (see Ab Hoving and Cor Emke, The Ships of Abel Tasman, p. 55). Accordingly, this is book is of lasting importance as a record of a lost craft.Although preceded by Nicolaas Witsen's 1671 book on the subject, De Nederlandsche Scheeps-bouw-konst is effectively the first … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANDRART, Jacob von
Nurmberg. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19 x 22.5". This beautiful map of Africa dates to around 1697 and offers fascinating detail within the largely unexplored interior of the continent. Pictorial mountains, snaking rivers, and small drawings of wildlife balance out the abundant labeling of ports on the coast that were well known to European traders. Typical of maps of this period, the prime meridian runs through Ferro Island. That this map relies more on impressions of the continent than on hard, factual evidence is reflected in the elaborate title cartouche in the bottom left, which illustrates the lifestyle and natural history of Africa as it was then known. In the center, a native chief stands under a parasol held by two other Africans in native dress. On the left, a woman nurses her baby in a hammock, while on the right, men on horseback enter into battle. More detailed wildlife include a lion, a snake, a lizard, and a fox. A key below the map explains the meaning of the colored regions. The map is a clean impression in excellent condition. Minor chips and staining to margins not affecting the image. Jacob von Sandrart (1630--1702) was a Nuremberg-based mapmaker and artist. His creativity brought him renown for his lush decoration and cartouches. This map of Africa is a beautiful example of his work.
