Alessandro SPECCHI (Roma, 1668 - Roma, 1729)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Anville d Jean Babtiste ( 1697 - 1782 ) Paris
Artist: Anville d Jean Babtiste ( - 1782 ) Paris; issued in: Paris; date: ca 1763, 1697. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49 x 66; - description : Map shows total Europe with Asia and north Afrika, on inset map Thailand; - vita of the artist: Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697 ?1782), was both a geographer and cartographer who greatly improved the standards of map-making. His maps of ancient geography, characterized by careful, accurate work and based largely on original research, are especially valuable. He left unknown areas of continents blank and noted doubtful information as such; compared to the lavish maps of his predecessors, his maps looked empty. His first serious map, that of Ancient Greece, was published when he was fifteen. At the age of twenty-two, he was appointed one the king's geographers, and began to attract the attention of first authorities. D'Anville's studies embraced everything of geographical nature in the world's literature, as far as he could muster it: for this purpose, he not only searched ancient and modern historians, travelers and narrators of every description, but also poets, orators and philosophers. One of his cherished subjects was to reform geography by putting an end to the blind copying of older maps, by testing the commonly accepted positions of places through a rigorous examination of all the descriptive authority, and by excluding from cartography every name inadequately supported. Vast spaces, which had before

[CORONELLI, VICENZO MARIA].
(circa1697]. Black and white map, ornate initial letter and double columns of text in Italian below and on the reverse. Sheet size 49.2 x 35cm, map size 24.5 x 27.4/30cm. The map was first published in 1688 as a gore sheet, a map with curved edges, which together with other similarly shaped sheets, designed to be pasted together around a base to form a globe. It is probable that this sheet is from Cornonelli's "Isolario descrittione geographico-historica, sacro-profano, antico-moderna, politica, naturale e poetica..." which was published in Venice in 1696-1697 Very good copy. Tooley 352. Coronelli is particularly famous for his construction of terrestrial and celestial globes. His most famous globes were a large pair he made for Louis XIV. Coronelli's talents were many. Born the son of a tailor in 1650, by the time of his death in 1718, he was a highly regarded theologian, mathematician and cartographer as well as having risen through the Franciscan order to become General of the Order. Over his career he produced over 500 maps and globes and founded Academia Cosmografica degli Argonauti the first geographical society. This gore sheet shows Northern Australia (from the Kimberley to the coast beyond Arnhem Land) with delightful depictions of an elephant, deer and other unlikely images of the land and its inhabitants. An important map of northern Australia, this map also offers a very interesting depiction of the section of Southeast Asia from Borneo's east coast to the western part of New Guinea, together with the islands of south-east Indonesia. Le Comte, Louis.
London: Pr. for Benj. Toke & Sam. Buckley, 1697. 8vo (20 cm; 8"). [12] ff., 527 [i.e., 543], [1] pp.; frontis. (port.), 3 plt. (2 fold.), fold. table. In the annals of early Westerners writing about China, the members of the Society of Jesus rank high for the quantity and quality of their writings. Louis Le Comte (1655–1728) began his novitiate in October 1671, was sent to China as a mathematician and a member of the 1687 Jesuit mission under the leadership of Jean de Fontaney, and returned to Europe in 1691. In 1696 he published his Nouveaux mémoires sur l'état présent de la Chine: It caused great debate within the Chinese Rites Controversy. This is the first edition of the English translation of that work. It begins with an engraved frontispiece portrait of Emperor Cam-hy [i.e., K'ang-hsi] signed "M. Vander Gucht sculp." The other plates depict "The throne of the emperor of China" (folding), "Outom-Chu, a tree in China," "The observatory at Pekin" (folding),and a folding table of "All the words that form the Chinese tongue" (!!). The work is a classic in the field of early European accounts of China, of missions to and in China, and of travel in general. Thomas Jefferson owned a copy of this edition and may have done so for the work's sections on education in that kingdom. Provenance: Signature of M. Middleton dated 1699 at top of the frontispiece. Later in the collection of the Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Wing (rev. ed.) ESTC R26296 It was Jacob Tonson's close working relationship with Dryden that allowed the great contemporary poets to make a serious living in beautifully illustrated editions. What Tonson had done in producing the exquisite 1688 first illustrated edition of Milton's Paradise Lost influenced Dryden leading to the contract witnessed by his friend and fellow poet William Congreve in 1693 calling for an edition with 102 brass [copper] plates. Consequently, this was the first example of a major literary work by a living English writer published by subscription. The first subscribers numbered 101 and each were honored with a plate with their coat of arms. Pitt Moses, 1639-1697
Pitt Moses, 1639-1697 - A map of the NORTHPOLE and the parts adioining, 1680, Pitt Moses Attractive English map of the North Pole and Arctic regions. The map combines some out-dated cartography with a solid view of Hudson and Baffin bays. In Canada the unusual three-island configuration of northern Labrador is derived in part from Sanson's map of 1656. Pitt includes the mythical island of Freesland complete with several place names and Forbishers Strait bisects the southern tip of Greenland. Cartographically the map is notable for the small inset map of Nova Zembla with an explanation that new information had arrived from Russia indicating that it was joined to the mainland instead of being an island as shown on the main map. The cartouche emphasizes the importance of whaling in the region with whaling scenes, walruses, narwhales and Eskimos in their kayaks. A magnificent coat of arms dedicates the map to Charles Fitz Charles, Earl of Plymouth. Size of the sheet: 58x67 cm., printed on thick paper, wide margins, only small tears on margins and only little fingerstained. This is the only original work prepared by Pitt for his ill-fated and uncompleted atlas. It was likely engraved by Michael Burghers, a Dutch emigrant who became the official engraver to the University of Oxford. The atlas was projected to be a 12 volume work in the tradition of the earlier Dutch atlases and was to use updated copperplates belonging to Johannes Jansson van Waesberge, son-in-law and heir of Jan Jansson. Only 4 volumes were completed before the venture failed and Pitt was thrown into debtor's pr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica, M.Pitt, 1680 Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula Moses Pitt Antique map chart Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Date: 1680 Publication: The English Atlas This beautiful map is one of the most intriguing examples of the internal workings of the map publishing business in the seventeenth century. The copperplate from which the map was printed was originally engraved by Pieter van den Keere (Petrus Kaerius) in 1608. It then passed into the hands of Jan Jansson in 1620, and finally to Jansson’s heirs who formed a partnership with the Englishman, Moses Pitt. The plate was reworked several times and a comparison of the various states provide a compelling view of the changing image of the world during the 17th century. In this final state, the classic carte-a-figures borders remain unchanged, while the map itself was updated with actual discoveries such as Australia, Tierra del Fuego and the straits of Magellan and Le Maire. Other changes reflect prevailing, but erroneous, theories such as an insular California, a peculiar isthmus linking Nova Zembla to northern Asia, and a revived huge Antarctic landmass. The map is very scarce because Pitt’s ambitious atlas project was a commercial failure; resulting in his confinement in debtor’s prison. This map is a classic example of the mapmaker's art with carte-a-figures borders depicting allegorical representations of the sun, moon, the five known planets, the four elements and the four seasons. Along the bottom are vignettes sh … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gaya, Louis de
London: Printed for Abel Roper 12mo (16 cm; 6.25"). [8], 112, [12] pp.. 1697 Third edition in English, but the first with this title. Originally published in Paris, 1680 as Les cérémonies nuptiales de toutes les nations, it was first published in English in 1685 as Nuptial rites, of which ESTC locates only the British Library copy, and a second time in 1687 with the title changed to Matrimonial customs, of which ESTC locates only the copies at the British Library, Oxford, Ohio State, and UCLA's Clark Library. The title-page of a 1698 edition takes it on to note that the work is "very diverting, especially to the ladies," and later printings also telegraph what might be called its "extra-educational" pleasures. While the Irish and Scots are discussed, the English and Welsh are not. Commentary on the rest of the world is surprisingly inclusive: China, Japan, Maluccas, Maldives, Syria, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Florida, the Caribbean, Cuba, Colombia, India, and so on. Some attention is paid to a few religions or sects — Catholics, Calvinists, Lutherans, Moors, the Druses — and an index entry points to the "Negroes" of "Serrelionia." Having previously noted the paucity of reported copies of the first and second editions, we note that searches of NUC, WorldCat, ESTC, and COPAC locate only seven copies of this edition in U.S. libraries and two in British. Recent quarter red morocco. Foxing and age-toning, yet clean, pleasant, and strong; a good, complete copy.

NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD"Recentissima Novi Orbis Sive Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Tabula'. Copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Carolus Allard c. 1697. Original hand colouring, heightened with gold.Rare map of North and South America, the first to show important corrections to the mapping of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Valley. The cartouche is especially attractive, with an allegorical figure of America seated within a sugar cane field inhabited by exotic animals and scenes relating to mankind"s eternal search for gold.Allard"s map includes one of the boldest depictions of the myth of Terra Esonis, a land bridge extending from Japan to the Straits of Anian, here with over a dozen place names and only a small strait on either side. We see a beautiful example of California as an Island, based upon Nicholas Sanson"s second projection. The open ended Great Lakes and primitive early treatment of the Mississippi River are also noteworthy, as is the early Rio Colorado, extending to a lake in Apachas and Navaio regions of the Southwest, and mistakenly referencing Taos and Xila, indicating a confusion with the Rio Grande regarding the Taos reference. The interior of South America includes tribal vignettes in Brazil and a misprojected, overly wide projection of the continent. An further interesting aspect of the map is the depiction of early Australia. Quiri Regio, the Northern parts of what would become Australia, are also well delineated, showing what would become Carpentaria, the Gulf of Carpentaria and Arnhem Land. A massive isla … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Tonti, Henry de]
Paris, 1697. 19th-century calf, spine gilt, leather label. Bookplate on front pastedown. Minor edge and corner wear, a few small nicks to boards. Minor worming to about a third of the text at upper and inner margins, just touching some letters, mostly in the headlines. Good. This work is generally considered the most reliable account of La Salle's last expedition, describing events from 1678 to 1691, particularly the fatal attempt to establish a colony in Texas and the explorations along the Gulf coast of Texas and Louisiana from 1685 until La Salle's murder in 1687. Tonti spent some time among the Indians of Louisiana and Texas, and accounts of those tribes are included as well. He later denied authorship of this book, but existing manuscripts suggest it was either written by him or compiled from his letters. A decade after La Salle's death, his many powerful enemies still provided incentive for the use of caution. This is the first issue of this work, including the account of pearl fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, which appears on pages 185-188. Those leaves were suppressed by the French government, and most copies have cancel leaves, easily recognizable because they are in smaller type, and omitting the reference to pearl fishing. A most important work for the French exploration of the Gulf Coast, Louisiana, Texas, and the Mississippi. HOWES T294, "c." STREETER SALE 105. GREENLY, MICHIGAN 7. WAGNER SPANISH SOUTHWEST 67.
