Franciscus HALMA (1653 - 1722)
Acquaforte e bulino. In ottimo stato di conservazione" Antique print of a prospect of the Port of Civitavecchia, with castle and arsenal. Engraved after G.B. Falda by Jacob de Laat. Tagli a spruzzo, unghie decorate. Minimi restauri a cuffie e cerniere. Ottimo esemplare. [Click Below for Full Description]

Evangelium infantiae.
1697 Editio princeps of a popular Arabic text, here published together with the translation in Latin. A rare and curious work, presenting at the one hand a critical text-edition for the Arabic language-student, and at the other hand it is de facto the editio princeps of a manuscript, very popular in the Near and Far East, and containing an Arabic Evangely of the Youth of Christ, belonging to the so-called apocryphe bible literature. Compiled from older apocryphe evangelies, like the Proto-Evangely by Jacobi and the Thomas-Evangely, and enlarged with all sorts of Western religious legends, it was especially popular with the Christian heretic sect of the Nestorians or Chaldeans at Syria, Persia, and Egypt. It also spread to the far East, to China, India and Japan. The editor, Henricus Sike, came from Bremen in Germany, and at the time he was a student at the Utrecht University, where he made a great impression on Reeland, a.o. Later he became professor in Hebrew at Cambridge, in England.- Our copy without title.- Titel fehlt. Versand D: 5,00 EUR

Anville d Jean Babtiste (1697 - 1782 ) Paris
Artist: Anville d Jean Babtiste ( - 1782 ) Paris; issued in : Paris; date: 1765 1697 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; condition: Some restoration at centerfold; size (in cm): 50,5 x 62 - description: Map depicts Turkey, Syria, Creta and Cyprus. On inset map the Bosporus and partly Greece with the islands Lesbos and Dardania. - vita of the artist: Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697 ?1782), was both a geographer and cartographer who greatly improved the standards of map-making. His maps of ancient geography, characterized by careful, accurate work and based largely on original research, are especially valuable. He left unknown areas of continents blank and noted doubtful information as such; compared to the lavish maps of his predecessors, his maps looked empty. His first serious map, that of Ancient Greece, was published when he was fifteen. At the age of twenty-two, he was appointed one the king's geographers, and began to attract the attention of first authorities. D'Anville's studies embraced everything of geographical nature in the world's literature, as far as he could muster it: for this purpose, he not only searched ancient and modern historians, travelers and narrators of every description, but also poets, orators and philosophers. One of his cherished subjects was to reform geography by putting an end to the blind copying of older maps, by testing the commonly accepted positions of places through a rigorous examination of all the descriptive authority, and by excluding from cartography every name inadequately supported. Vast spaces, which had befo … [Click Below for Full Description]

The characters - Virginia, Icilio, and Lucio and, in the recitative, also Publio and Appio - point to an opera on the ancient Roman story of Virginia (also spelled Verginia) as told by Livy in Ab Urbe Condita. The eighteenth century produced quite a few operas on that subject. In the early decades, Silvio Stampiglia's libretto La caduta dei Decemviri was set by several composers (first by Alessandro Scarlatti, 1697), but the present manuscript uses a different libretto. Between 1785 and 1798, operas entitled "Virginia" by Angelo Tarchi, Gioacchino Albertini, Gaetano Andreozzi, Felice Alessandri, and Vincenzo Federici emerged, to various libretti. In addition, there is an opera Icilio e Virginia by Ferdinando Paer (1793). The present manuscript omits all instrumental parts except the bass line. It was thus most probably either a director's score for the keyboard player or, more likely, an aid for the singer(s) in the learning of their parts; the note, "Prima Donna Virginia," could signify that the manuscript was written specifically for the singer cast in the role of Virginia.. Oblong quarto (300 x 220 mm.). 21, [i] (blank) pp. Notated in ink on 10-stave paper. Note to the right of caption title: "Prima Donna Virginia"; note to beginning of music: "Rec:uo"; note to end of music: "Fine Dell'atto Secondo." A scene in recitative and a terzetto. Recitative notated on two-stave systems: upper staff for all vocal parts, lower for instrumental bass (not figured). The recitative has five participants: Vir … [Click Below for Full Description]

NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD?Recentissima Novi Orbis Sive Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Tabula?. Copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Carolus Allard c. 1697. Original hand colouring, heightened with gold.Rare map of North and South America, the first to show important corrections to the mapping of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Valley. The cartouche is especially attractive, with an allegorical figure of America seated within a sugar cane field inhabited by exotic animals and scenes relating to mankind?s eternal search for gold.Allard?s map includes one of the boldest depictions of the myth of Terra Esonis, a land bridge extending from Japan to the Straits of Anian, here with over a dozen place names and only a small strait on either side. We see a beautiful example of California as an Island, based upon Nicholas Sanson?s second projection. The open ended Great Lakes and primitive early treatment of the Mississippi River are also noteworthy, as is the early Rio Colorado, extending to a lake in Apachas and Navaio regions of the Southwest, and mistakenly referencing Taos and Xila, indicating a confusion with the Rio Grande regarding the Taos reference. The interior of South America includes tribal vignettes in Brazil and a misprojected, overly wide projection of the continent. An further interesting aspect of the map is the depiction of early Australia. Quiri Regio, the Northern parts of what would become Australia, are also well delineated, showing what would become Carpentaria, the Gulf of Carpentaria and Arnhem Land. The book discusses the nature of rivers and their parts, the motion of water, estuaries and confluents, riverbanks, and the kind of materials carried by rivers. Fine.

Vincenzo Maria CORONELLI (Ravenna 1650 - Venezia 1718)
Beautiful map of the islands of Tremiti: San Nicola, Capraia, and San Domino, in the Adriatic Sea. From the famous Isolario dell'Atlante Veneto by V. M. Coronelli, published in two volumes, in 1696-1697. Copperplate, printed on two sheets joined togheter, in very good condition. Venezia Venice 590 450
