OVID, P Naso
Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1697. 1697 Ovid Metamorphoses in Rondeux Benserade Roman Greek Mythology Illustrated"I grabbed a pile of dust, and holding it up, foolishly asked for as many birthdays as the grains of dust, I forgot to ask that they be years of youth."― Ovid, MetamorphosesOvid's 'Metamorphoses' is one of the most famous works of Greek and Roman mythology and history of the 1st-century. It is known to have inspired the works of Dante, Boccaccio, Chaucer, and even Shakespeare as well as works of visual art and music. This epic poem recounts the history of the world from creation to the death of Julius Caesar. In 1667 French poet Isaac de Benserade published a unique edition of 'Metamorphoses' - an edition completely in rondeaux form. It was rather unpopular when it was first released; however, it has since become a highly desired and incredibly valuable edition of Ovid. This work features 239 incredible illustrations along with a curious conclusion using an acrostic of the names of Louis XIV and Madame de Ludre.Item number: #7092 Price: $795OVID, P NasoLes Metamorphoses d'Ovide en rondeaux imprimez et enrichis de figures par ordre de Sa MajestéA Amsterdam, chez Pierre Mortier ... Atabey Sale, 563: "Herbelot spent the last thirty years of his life working on his Bibliothèque orientale, a landmark in Arabic studies which was unfinished at his death and completed and published two years later by the orientalist Antoine Galland in 1697. He knew a range of languages, including Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Aramaic, Syriac, and Hebrew, and was familiar with their literature and history, of which this work forms an encyclopaedia." A supplement compiled by Claude de Visdelou wasn't published until 1780. James Ford Bell Catalogue, cites the 1781-83 edition only. [Attributes: First Edition]

The publisher Thomas Cook produced his own engravings based on the prints by Hogarth. His intention was to make some of the sad faces look happier as this made them more appealing to customers at the time. 1697. [Christianity, Religion] ~ POPE, Walter The life of the Right Reverend Father in God seth, Lord Bishop of Salisbury, And Chancellor of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.. London. Printed for William Keblewhite, 1697. 8vo. [4], 193pp, [3]. With two terminal pages of publisher's advertisements. Without errata slip. Contemporary blind-ruled speckled calf, recently rebacked and recornered. Later armorial bookplate of Seth Ward to FEP, near contemporary inked initials to head of title-page, occasional pencilled highlighting, light spotting, minute worm-holes to margins. The first edition of Walter Pope's (c.1630-1714) biography of Seth Ward (1617-1689), English astronomer, philosopher and Anglican bishop, and the first Savilian professor to both subscribe to and teach Copernican theory whilst at Oxford. Pope, a long-standing confidant, is remarkably generous in his praise for Ward's accomplishments - to the extent that he claims, likely falsely, that his friend was an autodidact in the field of mathematics. Throughout Pope provides succinct biographies of notable scholars associated with Ward; these include the astronomer Lawrence Rooke (1619/20-1662), whom Ward taught whilst at Cambridge; and polymath Isaac Barrow (1630-1677), who held the Cambridge chairs of Greek, Geometry and Mathematics in the wake of the Restoration before passing each on to noteworthy successors - the latter to Isaac Newton. Herbelot de Molainville
Paris: par la Compagnie des Libraires, 1697. First edition, folio, pp. [32], 1059, [1]; title page printed in red and black, woodcut ornaments and initials; full contemporary calf, gilt-decorated spine in 7 compartments, red morocco label in 1; edeges a little worn, a few minor tears and dampstains in the text, but in all, a very good, sound copy. Manuscript inscription at the top of the title page reads: "Monasterii S. Germani a pratis Congregationis S. Maun: 1698." Based on the immense Arabic bibliography (the Kashf al-Zunun) of Hadji Khalfa (Katip Çelebi), of which it is largely an abridged translation, but it also contains the substance of a vast number of other Arabic and Turkish compilations and manuscripts. Four editions of this encyclopedia on the culture and history of the Near East were printed, the last being 1781-83.

Autor(en) Evangelium infantiae.Verlag / Jahr 1697Sprache Gewicht ca. 500 gBestell-Nr 68850Bemerkungen Editio princeps of a popular Arabic text, here published together with the translation in Latin. A rare and curious work, presenting at the one hand a critical text-edition for the Arabic language-student, and at the other hand it is de facto the editio princeps of a manuscript, very popular in the Near and Far East, and containing an Arabic Evangely of the Youth of Christ, belonging to the so-called apocryphe bible literature. Compiled from older apocryphe evangelies, like the Proto-Evangely by Jacobi and the Thomas-Evangely, and enlarged with all sorts of Western religious legends, it was especially popular with the Christian heretic sect of the Nestorians or Chaldeans at Syria, Persia, and Egypt. It also spread to the far East, to China, India and Japan. The editor, Henricus Sike, came from Bremen in Germany, and at the time he was a student at the Utrecht University, where he made a great impression on Reeland, a.o.
