HAUDICQUER DE BLANCOURT (Jean)
Paris, Jean Jombert, 1697. (Duncan, 5804. Duveen, 281. Ferguson, I, 367. Wellcome, III, p. 223). A very good tight copy. ESTC R235060. Sir Richard Blackmore (1654-1729) was a physician and a poet with a passion for writing epics. He supported the Glorious Revolution, and his first epic Prince Arthur (1695) was a celebration of William III. The poem was based on the form of Virgil's The Aeneid and the subject matter of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae. It told of the Celtic King Arthur opposing the invading Saxons and taking London, which was a transparent encoding of William III opposing the "Saxon" James II and taking London. William made Blackmore physician-in-ordinary (a position he would hold with Queen Anne as well), gave him a gold medal, and knighted him in 1697. Among Blackmore's admirers were John … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ausgabe ' Rotterdam, 1695 - 1697' an); Graesse I, 314; vgl. Brunet I, 711 (spätere Ausgaben). Title, leaf 'To the Reader', 124 pp.; title and last page a bit darkened, marginal paper repairs to several corners including title-page without loss of letters, one leaf with scuff a bit obscuring text, second leaf slightly cropped at bottom not affecting text. Early nineteenth century polished calf gilt, gilt fillets to covers, spine gilt with raised bands, red and tan morocco labels lettered in gilt, ; sometime rebacked preserving spine, a very good example. Reader, here's sportive mirth and harmless Droll, Come buy and Read, and laugh thy Belly full. When thou hast done, if thou condemn me for 't, Then I have made my self, and not thee sport; That man is too morose, and much to blame, That doth condemn all mirth to be profane: All Ages have of lawful mirth allow'd; If too much time in it were not bestow'd. Here thou hast mirth, with small expence of time, I've taken paines, the pleasure will be thine. With "a pioneering dialect glossary, preceded in print only by John Ray's" (ODNB). This glossary is the fourth part of the publication, taking more than 30 pages (pp. 89-124): "For'th lang Lane, is when a thing is borrowed with an intention never to be pay'd again". The first part (pp. 1-32) is the Praise itself, an imaginative poem relating Bacchus' adventures in Yorkshire in an interesting mix of English, dialect and Latin. It was first published in 1685. It is followed (pp. 33-78) by A York-Shire Dialogue in its pure Natural Dialect [.] in the North parts of York shi … [Click Below for Full Description]

MYNSICHT, Adrian von (1603-1638)
Venice: Carlo Troise, 1697. Hardcover. Very Good+. Mynsicht’s esoteric ‘Thesaurus’ is one of the most reprinted works of chemical pharmacy. [24], 490, [68]; [6], 58, [2]; [6], 37, [2] pages. 8vo (160 x 100mm). Contemporary vellum boards; (some foxing, minor worming in lower corners). Extensive early annotations in Italian scattered throughout, some trimmed or faded, but adding to the overall feeling of use and appreciation. Mynsicht, of Magdeburg, was a Rosicrucian alchemist and esotericist. His remedies were widely used by European pharmacists from the 18th-century. Mynsicht is frequently cited as part of a “new science” in pharmacy as he introduced the idea of free medical practice. Mynsicht, also publishing under the name Henricus Madathanus, was best known for an allegorical text, Aureum saeculum redivivum, which communicated his alchemical philosophy in symbolic language. Like many of his contemporary alchemists, Mynsicht also made contributions to scientific chemistry and especially Paracelsianism, the medical movement based on the esoteric theories and therapies of Paracelsus. This Mysnicht’s thesaurus, first published in 1631, contains information on pharmaceutical remedies in this tradition with and appendix on the philosopher’s stone. This edition was supplemented with the additions of Carlo Musitano and Andrea Battimelli. A rare and important thesaurus of alchemy and pharmacy.

PRIDEAUX, Humphrey.
London, Printed for William Rogers, at the Sun against St. Dunstan's Church, in Fleetstreet, 1697. Two parts in one volume, 8vo. Near contemporary sprinkled calf with raised bands; pp. [2], xxiii, [5], 162; 180; wear to extremities; internally, apart from a few spots a very clean and good copy. The dean of Norwich was well-versed in Arabic and Hebrew and 'his main fame as a writer has rested on two frequently reprinted works, his Life of Mahomet (1697) and his Connection (1716-18). The former's title states its purpose - The True Nature of Imposture Fully Displayed in the Life of Mahomet - and the life itself is followed by a long Letter to the Deists identifying seven marks of imposture chargeable on 'Mahometism' but not on Christianity. Prideaux's learned footnotes and bibliography of thirty-six Arabic authorities imply original research in manuscript sources; but, as P. M. Holt shows, everything derives from printed editions (with Latin translations) or citations and references in Christian writers' (ODNB). ESTC R7105.
