Tagli spruzzati in rosso. All'interno esemplare in ottime condizioni di conservazione. [Click Below for Full Description]

Irvine, Christopher
Sumptibus quorundam Bibliopolarum Edinburgensium; Typisque Jacobi Watson, Edinburgi [Edinburgh] 1697 - Small 4to, pp. 96. Modern marbled paper boards, original endpapers preserved at the rear. Somewhat darkened around the edges, a thin dampstain in gutter expanded slightly towards the rear. Early ownership inscription of James Hamilton to title-page, rear endpapers covered in further ink trials in his hand, some offsetting onto title-page of another inscription from original (now lost) flyleaf. A condensed reprinting of this dictionary of Scottish place-names, first published in 1682 as an octavo of some 250 pages. This much slimmer volume shrinks the typeface considerably to fit the same text in less than half the space, though it also omits the dedication and letter to the reader. The physician Christopher Irvine (c.1620-1693) published on a number of subjects, and this volume topographical lexicography grew out of his editing of a similar work by Thomas Craufurd which he had published in 1664. The Peace of Turin, concluded in 1696, lurred the Duke of Savoy away from the Grand Alliance, which in its turn prompted the Austrians and Spanish to conclude a peace in Italy to protect their now dangerously exposed position there. William III was now also determined to bring an end to the war, and Louis XIV swallowed the bitter pill of recognizing William III as King of England. The necessary treaties then were signed in Ryswick. The Treaty of Ryswick, or Ryswyck, was signed on 20 September 1697 and named after Ryswick (now Rijswijk) in the Dutch Republic. SCHOTTI, Gasparis [SCHOTT, Gaspar] (1608-1666).
Herbipoli:: Excudit Jobus Hertz, Sumptibus Wolfgangi Mauritii Endteri, 1697., 1697. 22 cm. 4to. [20] ff., 1389 pp., [10] ff. Engraved half-title, title printed in red & black, hundreds of striking illustrations (several folding), index; foxed. Modern quarter antique-style calf, gilt-decorated compartments, dark red gilt-stamped label, marbled boards, endleaves. Short old Greek ink inscription on corner of title, translated, means: "everywhere the truth" [literal], thus "seek the truth everywhere." Very good copy. PRIMARY SOURCE FOR THE MAGICAL MONSTER & OTHER CREATURES. Third Edition (first issued in 1667) of an amazing encyclopedia of natural wonders, highly desired for its depictions of extraordinary figures and monstrous beings of both human and animals as well as fish, botanical or arboreal, and teratological phenomena. Caillet says this is the most complete treatise on demonology. All this writing about magic, both natural and … [Click Below for Full Description]
