SAINT REMY, Pierre Surirey de
Finely engraved allegorical frontis. incorporating a port. of Louis Auguste de Bourbon, the dedicatee, 179 engraved plates (many folding), & six folding engraved tables. Engraved arms on titles & several engraved headpieces. 10 p.l., 348 pp.; 3 p.l., 386 pp. Two vols. Large 4to, cont. fine red sheep, gilt fillet round sides, spines gilt, contrasting vellum lettering pieces on spines, a.e.g. Paris: J. Anisson, 1697. First edition of the classic French work of the period on artillery, which served several generations of artillery officers, including the young Napoleon. This richly illustrated work went through several later French editions (1702, 1741, 1745) and was translated into Russian (1732-33). Portions were translated into English in 1756. The plates were mainly executed by P. le Pautre after E. Fourier. Saint-Remy (ca. 1650-1716), was one of the chief artillery officers of the French army. In this comprehensive work, the author describes the manufacture of cannons of various sizes and types, the production of gunpowder and cannonballs, techniques of mounting cannon on carriages and on ships, proper organization and distribution of matériel for the batteries, proper positioning of the guns, ranging, tactics, attack, defense, etc., etc. The fine plates depict cannons and cannonballs, forges, carriages, methods of destroying mines and underground tunnels. A very fine and handsome set. Armorial bookplate of Comte du Kellerc.

Allard, Carolus (1648-1709)
NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD "Recentissima Novi Orbis Sive Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Tabula". Copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Carolus Allard c. 1697. Original hand colouring, heightened with gold. Rare map of North and South America, the first to show important corrections to the mapping of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Valley. The cartouche is especially attractive, with an allegorical figure of America seated within a sugar cane field inhabited by exotic animals and scenes relating to mankind's eternal search for gold. Allard's map includes one of the boldest depictions of the myth of Terra Esonis, a land bridge extending from Japan to the Straits of Anian, here with over a dozen place names and only a small strait on either side. We see a beautiful example of California as an Island, based upon Nicholas Sanson's second projection. The open ended Great Lakes and primitive early treatment of the Mississippi River are also noteworthy, as is the early Rio Colorado, extending to a lake in Apachas and Navaio regions of the Southwest, and mistakenly referencing Taos and Xila, indicating a confusion with the Rio Grande regarding the Taos reference. The interior of South America includes tribal vignettes in Brazil and a misprojected, overly wide projection of the continent. An further interesting aspect of the map is the depiction of early Australia. Quiri Regio, the Northern parts of what would become Australia, are also well delineated, showing what would become Carpentaria, the Gulf of Carpentaria and Arnhem Land. A massive … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

PERI, Giovanni Domenico (1564-1639). -
Venezia, Hertz, 1697. 4 picc. Peri was a rich and learned merchant who based this work primarily on his own experience. «It is a technical handbook for merchants, to teach them trading and book - keeping... It contains also interesting historical notices on the exchanges between the principal Italian and foreign cities... Peri demonstrates the importance of merchants (and) treats also of mercantile contracts... The work is still interesting, especially for the history of the mercantile customs of those times» (Palgrave III, 94). Some occasional light foxing, but a good copy in contemp. vellum (hinges weak).

POLLEXFEN, John.
London: For Brabazon Aylmer, 1697. Octavo (171 x 110 mm). Contemporary unlettered sprinkled calf, blind-stamped rule border to covers, preserved in a custom made cloth box. Joints cracked, but cords holding, spine ends and corners worn. Pastedowns not stuck down, rear free endpaper torn away. Occasional minor spotting. A very good copy. Contemporary attribution to Defoe handwritten on title. A contemporary handwritten edge label pasted to inside front board, now loose. First edition. John Pollexfen (1636-1715), a successful merchant and economist, served on numerous government bodies, his most important appointment being to the Board of Trade from 1696 to 1707. The Discourse is a "complete exposition of his views on trade and money" (Palgrave). "Pollexfen's economic writings were a by-product of his public career. Although Pollexfen did recommend that bonds and bills be assignable, he devoted much space to asserting the importance of retaining physical coin and denouncing the expanded role of paper money. Like Locke, he thought that silver had an innate value and that the standard of coin must be invariable. He regarded labour as the sole source of wealth and accordingly supported immigration. He recognized the importance of the domestic trade, which he wished to free from restrictions. In opposition to Child, he argued that the rate of interest was determined not by legislation but by the requirements of trade and the quantity of coin and capital" (ODNB). Goldsmiths' 3401; Kress 2041; Masui, p. 17; Matsuda 2838; Wing P2778. [Attributes: First Edition]

Le Comte, Louis.
Pr. for Benj. Toke & Sam. Buckley, 1697. In the annals of early Westerners writing about China, the members of the Society of Jesus rank high for the quantity and quality of their writings. Louis Le Comte (1655-1728) began his novitiate in October 1671, was sent to China as a mathematician and a member of the 1687 Jesuit mission under the leadership of Jean de Fontaney, and returned to Europe in 1691. In 1696 he published his Nouveaux mémoires sur l'état présent de la Chine: It caused great debate within the Chinese Rites Controversy. This is the first edition of the English translation of that work. It begins with an engraved frontispiece portrait of Emperor Cam-hy [i.e., K'ang-hsi] signed "M. Vander Gucht sculp." The other plates depict "The throne of the emperor of China" (folding), "Outom-Chu, a tree in China," "The observatory at Pekin" (folding),and a folding table of "All the words that form the Chinese tongue" (!!). The work is a classic in the field of early European accounts of China, of missions to and in China, and of travel in general. Thomas Jefferson owned a copy of this edition and may have done so for the work's sections on education in that kingdom. Provenance: Signature of M. Middleton dated 1699 at top of the frontispiece. Later in the collection of the Pacific School of Religion (properly released).

Ovidius Naso, Publius ; Valentijn, Abraham (vert.)
- Contemporary parchment binding. 150 x 90 mm, 12º: (dl 1:) pi2 *6 (-*4) A-K#12 L#8, [14] 256 pp.; (dl 2:) pi#2 A-Q#12, [4] 382 pp.; (dl 3:) pi#2 A-Q#12, [4] 338 [44] pp. Three identical engraved title pages with a circular portrait engraving. Part II has 15 etchings by C[oenraad] Decker. Little foxing, good copy. Prose translation (prozavertaling) of the complete works of Ovid (and more, because some poems are now known not to be Ovid’s). The works are arranged in the usual chronological order: first the heroines letters (Heldinnenbrieven) and erotic poetry (erotische poezie), then the metamorphoses, illustrated with 15 engravings by C Decker and in part III the incomplete calendar (only six of the 12 months) and mourning songs and letters from the Black Sea. These last two titles were written by Ovid while he was in exile. The translator, Abraham Valentijn (1640 – after 1697) was preceptor and rector at the Latin School in Dordrecht and from 1681 also the librarian for the Dordrecht city library. In his dedication to Mayor Adriaan van Blyenborch, he blames previous Ovid translators that they had not studied Greek historians and poets enough, thus "op tallijke blinde klippen gestooten sijn" (which means that they had a lot of difficulties translating). The 15 prints by Decker for the first edition of Valentijn’s translation, which appeared at Daniel Gaasbeeck at Leiden, are only a small part of the originally intended prints. When you read the message to the binder in the back, you’ll see that there was another set of prints (124 pieces!) that could hav … [Click Below for Full Description]

Folio, approximately 330 x 200 mm, 13 x 8 inches, pages: Title page, i- xvii, [1] errata, 1-343, [8] - index, bound in full contemporary panelled calf, blind decoration to covers, sometime rebacked in lighter calf with raised bands, no lettering or label. A very good tight copy. ESTC R235060. Sir Richard Blackmore (1654-1729) was a physician and a poet with a passion for writing epics. He supported the Glorious Revolution, and his first epic Prince Arthur (1695) was a celebration of William III. The poem was based on the form of Virgil's The Aeneid and the subject matter of Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae. It told of the Celtic King Arthur opposing the invading Saxons and taking London, which was a transparent encoding of William III opposing the "Saxon" James II and taking London. William made Blackmore physician-in-ordinary (a position he would hold with Queen Anne as well), gave him a gold medal, and knighted him in 1697. Among Blackmore's admirers were John … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Lenglet-Dufresnoy, N.] ed.
Au Mont Parnasse [Amsterdam?]: De l'imprimerie de messer Apollon(1697). Two vols. 8vo., full crushed crimson morocco with triple gilt fillet borders. In the center of both upper covers is the gilt-stamped design of the former owner: a serpent holding a long quill, writing in an open book the words of a muse or spirit pictured above. The initials on the book, F.L., are those of the collector, F. Lachèvre, whose bookplate, featuring a skull resting on an open book, is in both volumes. Spines with five raised bands and elaborate gilt tooling in the compartments. Board edges gilt, inner gilt dentelles, a.e.g. Both volumes ruled in red throughout; BOUND BY CUZIN and signed on the lower front turn-in. FINE.The compilation of this collection, with its fictitious imprint, has been variously attributed to Charles de Beauxoncles, Charles Besnacon and Berthelot (the editor of UC's Melvyl catalogue adds, "without sufficient reason"), as well as to original publisher, Antoine Estoc. It consists (358 pp. in volume one and 330 pp. in volume two) of satyrical and erotic poetry from sixteenth and seventeenth century France. A similar collection with a similar title appeared in 1618 and there have been other editions published into the twentieth century; the 1924 two-volume edition published in Paris by J, Fort reproduces the title-pages of the first four editions. A very fine set of a scarce and curious work.University of California Libraries do not have a copy of this edition. Harvard catalogues an undated [ca. 1700?] edition.
