Allard, Carolus (1648-1709)
"NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD ""Recentissima Novi Orbis Sive Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Tabula"". Copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Carolus Allard c. 1697. Original hand colouring, heightened with gold. Rare map of North and South America, the first to show important corrections to the mapping of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Valley. The cartouche is especially attractive, with an allegorical figure of America seated within a sugar cane field inhabited by exotic animals and scenes relating to mankind's eternal search for gold. Allard's map includes one of the boldest depictions of the myth of Terra Esonis, a land bridge extending from Japan to the Straits of Anian, here with over a dozen place names and only a small strait on either side. We see a beautiful example of California as an Island, based upon Nicholas Sanson's second projection. The open ended Great Lakes and primitive early treatment of the Mississippi River are also noteworthy, as is the early Rio Colorado, extending to a lake in Apachas and Navaio regions of the Southwest, and mistakenly referencing Taos and Xila, indicating a confusion with the Rio Grande regarding the Taos reference. The interior of South America includes tribal vignettes in Brazil and a misprojected, overly wide projection of the continent. An further interesting aspect of the map is the depiction of early Australia. Quiri Regio, the Northern parts of what would become Australia, are also well delineated, showing what would become Carpentaria, the Gulf of Carpentaria and Arnhem Land. A mass … [Click Below for Full Description]

Following his arrival in Portuguese India, Charles Dellon, a French surgeon, was imprisoned by the Portuguese Inquisition in Goa for denying the validity of baptism and blaspheming Catholicism. His attitude and criticisms toward the Inquisition were published in his most-known works 'l'Inquisition de Goa'. In this work, Dellon thoroughly describes his trial and incarceration, giving an account of the types of treatment he and other prisoners received during the Inquisition. He also writes about his authority on medicine as well as travel strategy to India from Europe. First published in 1687, this work was immensely popular and was immediately published in other European languages. The contents are incredibly desirable, so much so, that it is known to have had a substantial influence on writers such as Voltaire, who used this work to help write 'Candide.'. PUFENDORF, Samuel von.
Nuremberg: printed for Christophle Riegel by Knorz, 1697. 2 volumes, folio (365 x 225 mm), divided into text and plates. Contemporary calf, rebacked and tips repaired, with new endpapers, tan labels to spines lettered in gilt, gilt motifs to compartments, purple silk page markers. Housed in a custom grey cloth box, paper label to spine. Half-title present, complete with the leaf of instructions to the binder. Volume I with a few small chips and short tears to pages, some repaired with Japanese paper, occasional finger-soiling, some light foxing and occasional browning within text block area as usual. Engraved frontispiece and 12 engraved portraits in volume I; 115 engraved plates in volume II, many folding. First French edition, following the Latin edition of the previous year. Pufendorf's monumental history of the reign of Charles X Gustav of Sweden was written whilst serving as historiographer royal to Charles XI. The plates, mostly depicting land and sea battles in the Second Northern War, were engraved from the drawings of Erik Dahlberg (1625–1703), Quarter-Master General of the Swedish army, by a mixture of Dutch and French engravers, including one of the most notable plates of the time, the four-metre folding depiction of Gustav's funeral. Loosely inserted are two bookplates from the British politician George Rose, presumably removed when the endpapers were replaced. Rose (1744–1818), a friend of Nelson and George III, served as president of the Board of Tr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boccaccio, Giovanni; Decamerone. French. Illustrated by Romeyn de Hooghe.
Chez George Gallet, A Amsterdam: MDCXCVII, 1697. Two volumes. pp. v. 1: [24], 366 ; v. 2: 427, [13] Plus frontis and with 100 etchings by de Hooghe preceding each of the 100 novellas. First title page printed in red and black. Contemporary French full leather speckled calf bindings. 12 mo. 160mm. The etchings are boldly printed. Hardbound. Very Good+. Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) was one of the greatest of Italian poets. He mingled in courtly and scholarly society, and turned to story-writing in verse and prose. In 1350 he met Petrarch in Florence, and began his life as an ardent soldier in the cause of 'the new learning'. Around the same time he moved to Padua where he joined the court of Louis of Bavaria as Ambassador from the city-state of Florence. Later he served Florence (and humanism) as ambassador to many other Courts. The Decameron is a collection of novellas containing 100 tales told by a group of seven young women and three young men sheltering in a secluded villa just outside Florence to escape the Black Death, which was afflicting the city. Boccaccio probably conceived the Decameron after the epidemic of 1348, and completed it by 1353. The various tales of love in The Decameron range from the erotic to the tragic. Tales of wit, practical jokes, and life lessons contribute to the mosaic. In addition to its literary value and widespread influence (for example on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales), it provides a uniques document of life at the time. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was an extremely important and prolific late Dutch Baroque, painter, sculptor, engraver, pri … [Click Below for Full Description]

LA ROCHE-GUILHEN, Anne de;
[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Anville d Jean Babtiste ( 1697 - 1782 ) Paris
Artist: Anville d Jean Babtiste ( - 1782 ) Paris; issued in: Paris; date: ca 1740, 1697. technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 102 x 119; - description: map of Asia after Capt. Cook; - vita of the artist: Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697 ?1782), was both a geographer and cartographer who greatly improved the standards of map-making. His maps of ancient geography, characterized by careful, accurate work and based largely on original research, are especially valuable. He left unknown areas of continents blank and noted doubtful information as such; compared to the lavish maps of his predecessors, his maps looked empty. His first serious map, that of Ancient Greece, was published when he was fifteen. At the age of twenty-two, he was appointed one the king's geographers, and began to attract the attention of first authorities. D'Anville's studies embraced everything of geographical nature in the world's literature, as far as he could muster it: for this purpose, he not only searched ancient and modern historians, travelers and narrators of every description, but also poets, orators and philosophers. One of his cherished subjects was to reform geography by putting an end to the blind copying of older maps, by testing the commonly accepted positions of places through a rigorous examination of all the descriptive authority, and by excluding from cartography every name inadequately supported. Vast spaces, which had before

DELLON, Gabriel
1697 History of Inquisition of GOA Portuguese INDIA Catholic Dellon Torture Following his arrival in Portuguese India, Charles Dellon, a French surgeon, was imprisoned by the Portuguese Inquisition in Goa for denying the validity of baptism and blaspheming Catholicism. His attitude and criticisms toward the Inquisition were published in his most-known works ‘l'Inquisition de Goa’. In this work, Dellon thoroughly describes his trial and incarceration, giving an account of the types of treatment he and other prisoners received during the Inquisition. He also writes about his authority on medicine as well as travel strategy to India from Europe. One of the most important examples of Chinese history was written by Louis Le Comte, a French Jesuit who wrote this work on his mission to China in 1688. This work, ‘Nouveau Memoires’ created a huge debate within the Chinese Rites Controversy. These tomes cover various Chinese empires and kingdoms including the K’ang His and Kangxi, Chinese astrology and star gazing, Zodiac and mythology, Chinese boats, Mandarin costumes, mechanical inventions, and establishment of Christianity in China. While these contents are important, the most desirable aspect of this book is the section devoted to Confucius and his teaching, along with a rare portrait of Confucius. BLONDEL DE SAINT-AUBIN (Guillaume)
[Attributes: Hard Cover]

THIERS, Jean Baptiste.
Antoine Dezallier, Paris, 1697. Hardcover. Two volumes. Small octavos. French text. (xxxii) 532pp & (xxviii) 520pp. Modern full leather with gilt rules and embellishments to boards and spine, raised bands and gilt titling to spine, marbled page edges, fresh endpapers.The 'Traité des superstitions selon l'Ecriture Sainte,' ('Treatise on Superstitions According to Holy Scripture') was one of the best known and comprehensive of what have been termed the "catalogs of superstitions." It was written by Jean Baptiste Thiers (1636-1703), a French theologian, to aid other churchmen in the identification of what would now be termed folk or popular religious and magical beliefs, so that they could be better refuted and suppressed. As such it was in some ways an encyclopedia of such beliefs, with much on magic, 'the black arts', folk-healers, curses, talismans, astrology and all forms of divination, exorcism etc. etc. This edition was considerably revised and expanded from the First Edition of 1679. A few light scratches to boards, light bump to lower edge of upper board of volume II, small biographical clipping about the author tipped onto first blank, light browning to margins, otherwise a sound and attractive VG+ set.
