LYCOPHRON
Lycophron was Greek poet whose poem 'Alexandra' one of very few surviving works of the Hellenistic poet. This poem tells the prophetic stories of Cassandra in Greek mythology and the fortunes of city of Troy and Trojan heroes. This poem was one of the earliest written accounts of Alexander the Great with references to his uniting Asia and Europe as a world power. This 1697 Oxford edition was paraphrased by Byzantine poets Isaac and John Tzetzes in the 12th-century and includes their famous commentary originally entitled "Chiliades". Cervantes, Miguel De
Por Juan Bautista Verdussen, Antwerp, 1697. Finely bound work of Don Quixote, early illustrated Brussels edition, which had been the first in Spanish with illustrations. Octavo, 2 volumes, two frontispieces and 32 full-page engraved plates, bound contemporary calf, richly embossed and tooled, with gilt floral emblems to the spine. In excellent condition. Palau 51998; Peeters-Fontainas 232. Don Quixote tells the tale of a man so entranced by reading about the chivalrous romantic ideals touted in books that he decides to take up his sword and become a knight-errant himself, with the aims of defending the helpless and warding off the wicked. With his somewhat confused laborer-turned-squire, Sancho Panza, they roam the world together and have adventures that have haunted reader's imaginations for nearly four hundred years. Don Quixote is generally recognized as the first modern novel. Over those years, it has had an incredible influence on thousands of writers, from Dickens to Faulkner, who once said he reread it once a year, "just as some people read the Bible". Vladimir Nabokov is quoted as saying, "Don Quixote is greater today than he was in Cervantes's womb. [He] looms so wonderfully above the skyline of literature, a gaunt giant on a lean nag, that the book lives and will live through [his] sheer vitality. He stands for everything that is gentle, forlorn, pure, unselfish, and gallant. The parody has become a paragon." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Barthélemy d'Herbelot; Antoine Galland (ed.)
Compagnie des Libraires, 1697. [28], 1059, [1] pp.; thick folio, full vellum over boards, large central ornament stamped on upper and lower covers, six raised bands, tan leather title label with gilt title. Title page printed in red and black; with engraved head and tail pieces and initials throughout; half title and errata page. Page numbers 304-5 are skipped without interruption in contents; pages 461 and 871 misnumbered. Barthélemy d Herbelot (1625-1695), French Orientalist and chair of Syriac at the College Royal compiled this work of knowledge, an encyclopedia really, covering all aspects of the Islamic (i.e., Turkish, Persian and Arab-speaking) world. This first edition of Bibliotheque Orientale consists of over 8,000 entries/articles, alphabetically arranged, two columns per page; the title page spells out the ambitiously broad scope of knowledge about the Orient and its peoples to be found within: their histories, religions, arts and sciences, medicine, mathematics, natural history, mythology, geography, grammar, the lives of their saints, Turkish, Arab and Persian books, and on and on. This work was edited and published posthumously by d Herbelot s fellow Orientalist, Antoine Galland (1646-1715), perhaps more famously known for having been the first to translate "The Thousand and One Nights" into a Western European language. Galland also contributes a lengthy prefatory "Discours" that explains d Herbelot s methods and the need for Oriental studies. This work remained the standard reference through the nineteenth century, and a revised and expanded edition was publi … [Click Below for Full Description]

JONES, David
London : Printed, and are to be sold, by R. Baldwin ., MDCXCVII [1697]. 1697 SECRET History of White-Hall Stuart House SPY Letters David Jones 2in1 A rare collection of ‘secret history’ letters on English royalty and the Stuart House David Jones’s ‘Secret History of White-Hall’ is an important late 17th-century historical view of English royalty and politics. Jones recognized that the English public had a strong desire to understand the inner workings of the Stuarts and decided to capitalize on the taste for secret court memoirs, which had been largely censored prior to 1695. According to Snyder, these works were written in the form of letters written at Paris to a noble lord, a much-used device. Furthering on that, Bullard notes that ‘Secret History’ “scrutinizes the conventions of secret history to provide an acute analysis of this form of historiography. Jones’s observations not only have a profound impact upon the relationship between secret history and the opposition to arbitrary government, but also prefigure some of the more audacious was in which the conventions of secret history are manipulated during the 18th-century. ‘Secret History of White-hall’ consists of a series of 131 letters sent to an unnamed English peer to a spy at the French Court. A ‘Continuation’ contains 31 letters written through 1695. (Bullard, 53-55) Item number: #5126 Price: $750 JONES, David A continuation of the secret history of White-hall from the abdication of the late K.

Herbelot de Molainville, Barthélemy d'
Paris: par la Compagnie des Libraires. First edition, folio, pp. [32], 1059, [1]; title page printed in red and black, woodcut ornaments and initials; full contemporary calf, gilt-decorated spine in 7 compartments, red morocco label in 1; edeges a little worn, a few minor tears and dampstains in the text, but in all, a very good, sound copy. Manuscript inscription at the top of the title page reads: "Monasterii S. Germani a pratis Congregationis S. Maun: 1698." Based on the immense Arabic bibliography (the Kashf al-Zunun) of Hadji Khalfa (Katip Çelebi), of which it is largely an abridged translation, but it also contains the substance of a vast number of other Arabic and Turkish compilations and manuscripts. Four editions of this encyclopedia on the culture and history of the Near East were printed, the last being 1781-83. Atabey Sale, 563: "Herbelot spent the last thirty years of his life working on his Bibliothèque orientale, a landmark in Arabic studies which was unfinished at his death and completed and published two years later by the orientalist Antoine Galland in 1697. He knew a range of languages, including Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Aramaic, Syriac, and Hebrew, and was familiar with their literature and history, of which this work forms an encyclopaedia." A supplement compiled by Claude de Visdelou wasn't published until 1780. James Ford Bell Catalogue, cites the 1781-83 edition only. [Attributes: First Edition]

"Map taken from the ""Mercurio Geografico"", a collection of maps printed in Rome between 1660 and 1730 by De Rossi. Along the years the Atlas has been enriched with many plates; those added at the end of the XVIII century, like the present one, are much more rare to find than the maps of the first editions. Copperplate, in excellent condition."

Alessandro SPECCHI (Roma, 1668 - Roma, 1729)
[Click Below for Full Description]
