[ART CENSORSHIP].

Milan: Giuseppe Malatesta, 1697. [24], 316, [1] pp. With a full-page engraved allegorical frontispiece. Collation: [cross]12 A-M12 N14, COMPLETE. Bound in contemporary Italian vellum (insignificant occasional wormholes). Early ownership inscriptions ("Collegii Nob. [...] Soc. Jesu") on title and blank leaf opposite frontispiece (both cancelled in brown ink). In very good antiquarian condition The Counter-Reformation at war against "obscene" and "lascivious" art, references throughout the text to Leonardo, Michelangelo, Titian, Barocci, Caracci, Raphael, Rubens, Tintoretto, and their contemporaries. Foremost no longer is the aesthetic value of art works, but their moral effect on the public. Among with this goes a new demand for historic truth: the "pitture oneste." Rosignoli (1631-1707) here presents the moralistic art policy of the Counter-Reformation, established after the Council of Trent. The extremely curious allegorical frontispiece depicts St. Michael bearing a shield onto which Christ's likeness has been emblazoned; from this shield rays of light burn through two Baroque paintings; a charred Demon, his artist's palette cast aside, smolders at St. Michael's feet. The work proved popular and several editions were issued almost immediately. Priority has been arbitrarily given to the undated Bologna edition which may actually be a later reprint.       Amsterdam: Andries Voorstad for Jan ten Hoorn, 1697. Quarto, with engraved title page and 21 plates (of which 13 are double-page); fine in contemporary Dutch vellum, spine skilfully lettered in ink. Building the ships of Pelsaert, Tasman and de Vlamingh: the great VOC manual. One of the great seventeenth-century shipbuilding manuals, and the first published in Dutch by a practising shipwright. This richly illustrated book is a remarkable companion to the extraordinary maritime history of the VOC and the Dutch voyagers in general, showing the manner in which the vessels sailed by Pelsaert, Tasman and de Vlamingh were built. As the wealth of the VOC grew throughout the seventeenth century, Dutch shipbuilding thrived and won widespread acclaim (indeed, even the Czar Peter the Great was drawn to the Netherlands to witness the craft first-hand).Shipbuilding was a closed art, typically handed from father to son, and early printed descriptions of the construction process are scarce. When merchants and guildsmen of the VOC commissioned ocean-going vessels, details of the hull and design were typically left to the experience of the shipwright; as a direct result 'no construction draughts exist of seventeenth-century Dutch ships. The only tangible thing which did remain of the methods followed are the building contracts' (see Ab Hoving and Cor Emke, The Ships of Abel Tasman, p. 55). Accordingly, this is book is of lasting importance as a record of a lost craft.Although preceded by Nicolaas Witsen's 1671 book on the subject, De Nederlandsche Scheeps-bouw-konst is effectively the first practical treatise on the subject printed in Holland. The central point is that Yk was a practising shipwright with decades of experience, familiar with the difficulty of finding skilled workers and the quality timbers required for a large vessel, as opposed to Witsen, who was the mayor of Amsterdam and had a great personal interest in the craft, but who necessarily relied on the testimony of shipwrights in authoring his book. Yk's choice to print a large and lavishly illustrated book reflects an important cultural change: by using print to illuminate shipbuilding processes to a wider public the author acknowledged the fact that many merchants and investors who commissioned large ocean going vessels had little experience at sea. In Holland by the late seventeenth century, the East Indies trade of the VOC interested a good portion of the upper middle classes who formed an eager audience for a book of this nature. This is an unusually well preserved copy in a contemporary full vellum binding. The introductory chapter indulges in some historical speculation, with three plates illustrating possible plans for Noah's ark, ancient galleys of the Mediterranean, and ornamental boats of South-east Asia.

        Accuratissima Totius Africae Tabula

Nurmberg. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19 x 22.5". This beautiful map of Africa dates to around 1697 and offers fascinating detail within the largely unexplored interior of the continent. Pictorial mountains, snaking rivers, and small drawings of wildlife balance out the abundant labeling of ports on the coast that were well known to European traders. Typical of maps of this period, the prime meridian runs through Ferro Island. That this map relies more on impressions of the continent than on hard, factual evidence is reflected in the elaborate title cartouche in the bottom left, which illustrates the lifestyle and natural history of Africa as it was then known. In the center, a native chief stands under a parasol held by two other Africans in native dress. On the left, a woman nurses her baby in a hammock, while on the right, men on horseback enter into battle. More detailed wildlife include a lion, a snake, a lizard, and a fox. A key below the map explains the meaning of the colored regions. The map is a clean impression in excellent condition. Minor chips and staining to margins not affecting the image. Jacob von Sandrart (1630--1702) was a Nuremberg-based mapmaker and artist. His creativity brought him renown for his lush decoration and cartouches. This map of Africa is a beautiful example of his work.

(12),282,(17) pp.* First Dutch edition; first published in French Relation de l'inquisition de Goa. Leiden 1687. - In 1668 Dellon sailed to India with the Compagnie des Indes. He travelled extensively along the Malabar coast. In 1673 he left the employment of the company and started a private medical practice in Damao, at that time a Portuguese colony. Six months later, early in 1674, he was arrested by the Inquisition and taken to Goa, where he was imprisoned for two years. He was then shiped to Lisbon, but released in the following year on condition that he should return immediately to France. . It proved a considerable success , particularly in Protestant Europe, where it ran to numerous editions. Although long regarded purely as a work of propaganda, recent research has testified to its accuracy (Howgego p.304/305). It includes also details of his stay in Bahia, Brazil. His account of the Inquisition was still forbidden in Portugal in 1769. - A nice copy.Cf. Borba de Moraes I, p.253-255; Sabin 19444-19447. [Attributes: First Edition]

Milano, per Marc?'Antonio Pandolfo Malatesta, (1697). In-8 gr. Importante e rara opera in "edizione originale". Cfr. A Paris Chez Christope Ballard. 1697 - 12mo (in 6s), 157 x 90 mms., pp. [xiv], 166 [167 - 1766 contents], woodcut of pantograph on page 8, contemporary calf, spine ornately gilt in compartments, morocco label; lacks leaves before title-page and after end of text, some minor marginal worming, joints cracked, top and base of spine worn, corners worn. A fair copy. First published in 1673 or 1674, Traite de Mignature proved to be very popular with aspiring artists, because of its detailed instructions on preparing paints and pigments. The first English translation appeared in 1729, The Art of Painting in Miniature. A diagram of a colour wheel was added to the edition published in 1708, making the work even more successful and useful. The attribution of the work to "Claude Boutet" was made by Joseph-Marie Quérard (1797-1865) in his his bibliographic dictionary, La France Litteraire (1826-1842), deriving from a pencil annotation of an edition of the work published in 1711.

Guillaume Broedelet 1697 Utrecht, 1697 Good lacking back board 1st Hardbound 12mo 506p Internally very good to fine. Engraved and printed title pages, two folding engraved plates two large folding engraved maps. Plates are of an American buffalo and the FIRST STATE OF THE FIRST PUBLISHED VIEW OF NIAGRA FALLS, the height of which Hennepin, in his usual manner, exaggerated to 600 feet. This work also includes Hennepin's pretended expedition to the mouth of the Mississippi, which he appropriated from Le Clercq's "Premier Establissement de la Foy dans la Nouvelle France (Paris 1691)" Despite Hennepin's propensity to exaggerate and even plagiarize, Nouvelle decouverte remains one of the most important volumes in early history of North America. He lived for eleven years on this continent and penetrated farther into the then unknown interior than anyone before him (Lande 423 note). Streeter I:104, Howes H416. Howes rate this item as an e..
