        Accuratissima Totius Africae Tabula

Nurmberg. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19 x 22.5". This beautiful map of Africa dates to around 1697 and offers fascinating detail within the largely unexplored interior of the continent. Pictorial mountains, snaking rivers, and small drawings of wildlife balance out the abundant labeling of ports on the coast that were well known to European traders. Typical of maps of this period, the prime meridian runs through Ferro Island. That this map relies more on impressions of the continent than on hard, factual evidence is reflected in the elaborate title cartouche in the bottom left, which illustrates the lifestyle and natural history of Africa as it was then known. In the center, a native chief stands under a parasol held by two other Africans in native dress. On the left, a woman nurses her baby in a hammock, while on the right, men on horseback enter into battle. More detailed wildlife include a lion, a snake, a lizard, and a fox. A key below the map explains the meaning of the colored regions. The map is a clean impression in excellent condition. Minor chips and staining to margins not affecting the image. Jacob von Sandrart (1630--1702) was a Nuremberg-based mapmaker and artist. His creativity brought him renown for his lush decoration and cartouches. This map of Africa is a beautiful example of his work.

Ogni tavola conserva la velina originale. Esemplare privo di fioriture. Eccellenti condizioni conservazione, fatti salvi minimi schiarimenti delle coperte agli angoli inferiori esterni. Alcune tavole, come sovente accade, sono collazionate fuori posto: segnatamenate "Hogarth painting the Comic House" compare all'antiporta del primo volume, "Morning" all'antiporta del terzo, "The Politician" all'antiporta del quinto, "The Shrimp Girl" e "The Milkmaid" all'antiporta del sesto, mentre "The Pieman" non appare nell'Indice.

      - Amsterdam, Pieter Mortier, 1697.Sm.8vo. Contemporary vellum. With engraved title-vignette, 3 engraved vignettes and 6 engraved plates (3 folding). (12),282,(17) pp.* First Dutch edition; first published in French Relation de l'inquisition de Goa. Leiden 1687. - In 1668 Dellon sailed to India with the Compagnie des Indes. He travelled extensively along the Malabar coast. In 1673 he left the employment of the company and started a private medical practice in Damao, at that time a Portuguese colony. Six months later, early in 1674, he was arrested by the Inquisition and taken to Goa, where he was imprisoned for two years. He was then shiped to Lisbon, but released in the following year on condition that he should return immediately to France. . It proved a considerable success , particularly in Protestant Europe, where it ran to numerous editions. Although long regarded purely as a work of propaganda, recent research has testified to its accuracy (Howgego p.304/305). It includes also details of his stay in Bahia, Brazil. His account of the Inquisition was still forbidden in Portugal in 1769. - A nice copy.Cf. Borba de Moraes I, p.253-255; Sabin 19444-19447. [Attributes: First Edition]

Importante e rara opera in "edizione originale". Cfr. Biograf. Italiani,XV, p. 754.

A Paris Chez Christope Ballard. 1697 - 12mo (in 6s), 157 x 90 mms., pp. [xiv], 166 [167 - 1766 contents], woodcut of pantograph on page 8, contemporary calf, spine ornately gilt in compartments, morocco label; lacks leaves before title-page and after end of text, some minor marginal worming, joints cracked, top and base of spine worn, corners worn. A fair copy. First published in 1673 or 1674, Traite de Mignature proved to be very popular with aspiring artists, because of its detailed instructions on preparing paints and pigments. The first English translation appeared in 1729, The Art of Painting in Miniature. A diagram of a colour wheel was added to the edition published in 1708, making the work even more successful and useful. The attribution of the work to "Claude Boutet" was made by Joseph-Marie Quérard (1797-1865) in his his bibliographic dictionary, La France Litteraire (1826-1842), deriving from a pencil annotation of an edition of the work published in 1711.         "The secret history of Whitehall. From the restoration of Charles II. Down to the abdication of the late K. James. Writ at the request of a noble Lord, and conveyed to him in letters, by ________ late Secretary-Interpreter to the Marquess of Louvois, who by that means had the perusal of all the private minutes between England and France for many years. The whole consisting of secret memoirs, which have hitherto lain conceal'd, as not being discoverable by any other hand. Published from the original papers."

London: R. Baldwin. 1697. "First edition, small 8vo, pp. [14], 80, 80, 80, 64, 80, 110; contemporary paneled calf with tasteful modern rebacking and red morocco label on spine, extremities worn and boards a little splayed, but overall good and sound. Jones (fl. 1676-1720), a captain in the English royal regiment of dragoons, spent much of his time on the continent, where he became fluent in modern languages and was appointed to serve the Marquis of Louvois. Jones published many works in his lifetime, but The Secret History is chief among them. It ""consists of a series of letters purporting to have been written by Jones to an English peer between January 1676 and February 1689, and professes to divulge the secret diplomatic transactions that had passed between the English and French courts during the previous twenty years. Little reliance can, however, be placed on these pretensions"" (DNB). Wing J934."

Guillaume Broedelet 1697 Utrecht, 1697 Good lacking back board 1st Hardbound 12mo 506p Internally very good to fine. Engraved and printed title pages, two folding engraved plates two large folding engraved maps. Plates are of an American buffalo and the FIRST STATE OF THE FIRST PUBLISHED VIEW OF NIAGRA FALLS, the height of which Hennepin, in his usual manner, exaggerated to 600 feet. This work also includes Hennepin's pretended expedition to the mouth of the Mississippi, which he appropriated from Le Clercq's "Premier Establissement de la Foy dans la Nouvelle France (Paris 1691)" Despite Hennepin's propensity to exaggerate and even plagiarize, Nouvelle decouverte remains one of the most important volumes in early history of North America. He lived for eleven years on this continent and penetrated farther into the then unknown interior than anyone before him (Lande 423 note). Streeter I:104, Howes H416. Howes rate this item as an e..         Theses Adversus Balth. Bekkerum Circa Operationes Daemonum in Libro, Quem Vocat Die Bezauberte Welt.

Literis Hakianis, Wittenberg 1697 - Unbound pamphlet. Small quarto. (7 1/2 x 6 inches). (16) p. Sewn, paper backstrip. No wrappers. Title page serves as front wrapper. The printed text of a disputation delivered to the University of Wittenberg on November 6, 1697, by one Johannes Christianus Bremer. The text is essentially a refutation of some of the arguments presented by Balthasar Bekker in "Die Betoverde Weereld." Bremer seems to argue the existence of demons and of their power and influence in earthly affairs, and suggests that to reject this is ipso facto to deny the existance of angels, and also of God, and to plunge into unholy atheism. Extremely scarce. The full title reads "Theses adversus Balth. Bekkerum circa operationes Daemonum in libro, quem vocat Die Bezauberte Welt gravissime errantem directae quas placido eruditorum examini d. 6. Nov. a. 1697 subjicient praeses M. Andr. Kunad, et respondens Johannes Christianus Bremer Belticensis Sax." No copies in Caillet, or the KTO-published Cornell Witchcraft Collection Catalogue, nor referenced by Thorndike. Manuscript number on title. Corners creased and pages browned and a little chipped at edges. Still a still a complete, near VG copy of an extremely scarce work. LXVI, t[unc]. t[emporis]. à quibusdam supremis theologorum collegiis petita, postea hinc inde collecta

Halle, 1697 - Judicial and theological opinions (in Latin and German) regarding the controversial marriage in 1666 of the castrato and court favorite, Bartolomeo de Sorlisi, with a young Dresden girl, Dorothy Lichtwer. The discovery of the marriage, which had the blessing of Johann Georg II, Elector of Saxony, provoked a cry of outrage in many circles, including the Lutheran theological establishment as well many in the legal community, and Sorlisi soon became the unfortunate victim of much abuse and mockery. Upon his death in 1672, the marriage was adnnulled in 1672, but the firestorm of controversy which erupted did not abate for many years to come. So controversial was the Sorlisi-Lichter marriage, however, that EUNUCHI CONIUGIUM went through a total of nine editions, of which this is the second. Editions followed of 1718, 1730, 1737, and 1759. OCLC locates only four copies in the US of the first (Harvard, Harvard Law, NY Academy of Medicine, and UCLA); of this second edition, only one copy is found in the US (Harvard Law) Second edition (preceded by the first edition of 1685). 8vo.
