Memoirs and observations topographical, physical, mathematical, mechanical, natural, civil, and ecclesiastical. Made in a late journey through the Empire of China, and published in several letters. Particularly upon the Chinese pottery and varnishing; the silk and other manufactures; the pearl fishing; the history of plants and animals. Description of their cities and publick works; number of people, their language, manners and commerce; their habits, oeconomy, and government. The philosophy of Confucius. The state of Christianity, with many other curious and useful remarks.

London: Pr. for Benj. Toke & Sam. Buckley 8vo (20 cm; 8"). [12] ff., 527 [i.e., 543], [1] pp.; frontis. (port.), 3 plt. (2 fold.), fold. table.. 1697 In the annals of early Westerners writing about China, the members of the Society of Jesus rank high for the quantity and quality of their writings. Louis Le Comte (1655–1728) began his novitiate in October 1671, was sent to China as a mathematician and a member of the 1687 Jesuit mission under the leadership of Jean de Fontaney, and returned to Europe in 1691. In 1696 he published his Nouveaux mémoires sur l'état présent de la Chine: It caused great debate within the Chinese Rites Controversy. This is the first edition of the English translation of that work. It begins with an engraved frontispiece portrait of Emperor Cam-hy [i.e., K'ang-hsi] signed "M. Vander Gucht sculp." The other plates depict "The throne of the emperor of China" (folding), "Outom-Chu, a tree in China," "The observatory at Pekin" (folding),and a folding table of "All the words that form the Chinese tongue" (!!). The work is a classic in the field of early European accounts of China, of missions to and in China, and of travel in general. Thomas Jefferson owned a copy of this edition and may have done so for the work's sections on education in that kingdom. Provenance: Signature of M. Middleton dated 1699 at top of the frontispiece. Later in the collection of the Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Contemporary modest Cambridge-style binding of speckled calf; very nicely newly rebacked. Small institutional stamp on title-page and in margin of one other page. A very good copy.

THE WORKS OF VIRGIL: Containing His Pastorals, Georgics, and Aeneis translated into English by Mr. Dryden

London: for Jacob Tonson, 1697. First Edition. Folio. 690pp.  p.41-42 list of subscribers with engravings dedicated to them. p. 39-40 is the list of all subscribers. 102 full page engravings, closed marginal tear to p. 17, p. 97 misnumbered 95 with pagination continuing from that point, short closed tear to plate at lower margin near gutter of p. 346.  p. 399 misnumbered 499.  Close marginal tear to lower edge of plate p. 508. The plates mainly engraved by Wenceslaus Hollar or Pierre Lombart, from drawings by Franz Cleyn were adapted from John Ogilby's earlier folio translation. From the library of George William Mason with his armorial bookplate. Bound in full Cambridge style contemporary calf, early repair to spine ends and one corner, newer red leather spine label gilt, surface crack to upper joint, few leaves with some browning.  A handsome copy. ESTC R26296 It was Jacob Tonson's close working relationship with Dryden that allowed the great contemporary poets to make a serious living in beautifully illustrated editions. What Tonson had done in producing the exquisite 1688 first illustrated edition of Milton's Paradise Lost influenced Dryden leading to the contract witnessed by his friend and fellow poet William Congreve in 1693 calling for an edition with 102 brass [copper] plates. Consequently, this was the first example of a major literary work by a living English writer published by subscription. The first subscribers numbered 101 and each were honored with a plate with their coat of arms. Moreover, the contract called for the subscriber's edition to be printed on fine paper with wider margins (the smaller edition also had very narrow gutters). It is estimated by Dryden scholar, John Barnard that the first printing was fewer than 1,000 copies (including the copies on inferior paper). It was this Tonson edition that Samuel Johnson reported nearly a century later that brought honor to the nation.

Marriage ceremonies, or, The ceremonies used in marriages in all parts of the world.

London: Printed for Abel Roper 12mo (16 cm; 6.25"). [8], 112, [12] pp.. 1697 Third edition in English, but the first with this title. Originally published in Paris, 1680 as Les cérémonies nuptiales de toutes les nations, it was first published in English in 1685 as Nuptial rites, of which ESTC locates only the British Library copy, and a second time in 1687 with the title changed to Matrimonial customs, of which ESTC locates only the copies at the British Library, Oxford, Ohio State, and UCLA's Clark Library. The title-page of a 1698 edition takes it on to note that the work is "very diverting, especially to the ladies," and later printings also telegraph what might be called its "extra-educational" pleasures. While the Irish and Scots are discussed, the English and Welsh are not. Commentary on the rest of the world is surprisingly inclusive: China, Japan, Maluccas, Maldives, Syria, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Florida, the Caribbean, Cuba, Colombia, India, and so on. Some attention is paid to a few religions or sects — Catholics, Calvinists, Lutherans, Moors, the Druses — and an index entry points to the "Negroes" of "Serrelionia." Having previously noted the paucity of reported copies of the first and second editions, we note that searches of NUC, WorldCat, ESTC, and COPAC locate only seven copies of this edition in U.S. libraries and two in British. Recent quarter red morocco. Foxing and age-toning, yet clean, pleasant, and strong; a good, complete copy.

North and South America - Carolus Allard, c. 1697.

NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD"Recentissima Novi Orbis Sive Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Tabula'. Copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Carolus Allard c. 1697. Original hand colouring, heightened with gold.Rare map of North and South America, the first to show important corrections to the mapping of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Valley. The cartouche is especially attractive, with an allegorical figure of America seated within a sugar cane field inhabited by exotic animals and scenes relating to mankind"s eternal search for gold.Allard"s map includes one of the boldest depictions of the myth of Terra Esonis, a land bridge extending from Japan to the Straits of Anian, here with over a dozen place names and only a small strait on either side. We see a beautiful example of California as an Island, based upon Nicholas Sanson"s second projection. The open ended Great Lakes and primitive early treatment of the Mississippi River are also noteworthy, as is the early Rio Colorado, extending to a lake in Apachas and Navaio regions of the Southwest, and mistakenly referencing Taos and Xila, indicating a confusion with the Rio Grande regarding the Taos reference. The interior of South America includes tribal vignettes in Brazil and a misprojected, overly wide projection of the continent. An further interesting aspect of the map is the depiction of early Australia. Quiri Regio, the Northern parts of what would become Australia, are also well delineated, showing what would become Carpentaria, the Gulf of Carpentaria and Arnhem Land. A massive island of Isabella appears above Australia. Several early place names and islands are also shown. The map of America by Allard is derived from that of Frederick de Wit, c. 1675.Reference: Burden, The Mapping of North America II: 724Price: € 2.200,- (excl. VAT) .

DERNIERES DECOUVERTES DANS L'AMERIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE DE M. LA SALE...

Paris, 1697. 19th-century calf, spine gilt, leather label. Bookplate on front pastedown. Minor edge and corner wear, a few small nicks to boards. Minor worming to about a third of the text at upper and inner margins, just touching some letters, mostly in the headlines. Good. This work is generally considered the most reliable account of La Salle's last expedition, describing events from 1678 to 1691, particularly the fatal attempt to establish a colony in Texas and the explorations along the Gulf coast of Texas and Louisiana from 1685 until La Salle's murder in 1687. Tonti spent some time among the Indians of Louisiana and Texas, and accounts of those tribes are included as well. He later denied authorship of this book, but existing manuscripts suggest it was either written by him or compiled from his letters. A decade after La Salle's death, his many powerful enemies still provided incentive for the use of caution. This is the first issue of this work, including the account of pearl fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, which appears on pages 185-188. Those leaves were suppressed by the French government, and most copies have cancel leaves, easily recognizable because they are in smaller type, and omitting the reference to pearl fishing. A most important work for the French exploration of the Gulf Coast, Louisiana, Texas, and the Mississippi. HOWES T294, "c." STREETER SALE 105. GREENLY, MICHIGAN 7. WAGNER SPANISH SOUTHWEST 67.         PIETAS IN PATRIAM: THE LIFE OF HIS EXCELLENCY SIR WILLIAM PHIPS, KNT. LATE CAPTAIN GENERAL, AND GOVERNOUR IN CHIEF OF THE PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSET-BAY [sic], NEW ENGLAND

London, 1697. 12mo. Contemporary calf, spine gilt. Corners worn, hinges renewed. Some slight worming to lower edge, affecting a few lines of the first half of the text. Minor toning, but generally quite clean. About very good. Governor Phips was a most colorful character, not in keeping with the Puritan Mathers, who were his staunchest supporters. He earned his knighthood by discovering the wreck of a Spanish treasure galleon in the Bahamas, recovering a large fortune in gold and silver bullion, and earning for his stockholders - among them King James II - a dividend of 8000 percent. His rise from humble beginnings to the governorship of Massachusetts is an early American success story. Phips presided over New England at a time when it was rocked by the witch trials and King William's War against the French, which saw most outlying settlements besieged by the French and Indians. Streeter calls this "one of the great American biographies." Samuel Eliot Morison describes it in THE PURITAN PRONAOS as "good reading now as when it first appeared. Mather glossed over the vulgarities and immoralities of this self-made hero...but in terse, vigorous English he described enough fighting, treasure-hunting, mutinies, ship wrecks, and other adventures to satisfy the most red-blooded reader. The lives of Eliot and Phips...are a worthy beginning for New England biographical literature." STREETER SALE 652. CHURCH 766. HOLMES, COTTON MATHER 279-A. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 697/121. JCB (2)II:1082.       Halle, 1697. Second edition (preceded by the first edition of 1685). [8], 159 pp. Text in Latin and German. 1 vols. 8vo. Disbound. Title page a little soiled, slightly foxing hear and there, a few leaves dog-eared. Second edition (preceded by the first edition of 1685). [8], 159 pp. Text in Latin and German. 1 vols. 8vo. EUNUCHS. Judicial and theological opinions (in Latin and German) regarding the controversial marriage in 1666 of the castrato and court favorite, Bartolomeo de Sorlisi, with a young Dresden girl, Dorothy Lichtwer. The discovery of the marriage, which had the blessing of Johann Georg II, Elector of Saxony, provoked a cry of outrage in many circles, including the Lutheran theological establishment as well many in the legal community, and Sorlisi soon became the unfortunate victim of much abuse and mockery. Upon his death in 1672, the marriage was adnnulled in 1672, but the firestorm of controversy which erupted did not abate for many years to come. So controversial was the Sorlisi-Lichter marriage, however, that EUNUCHI CONIUGIUM went through a total of nine editions, of which this is the second. Editions followed of 1718, 1730, 1737, and 1759. OCLC locates only four copies in the US of the first (Harvard, Harvard Law, NY Academy of Medicine, and UCLA); of this second edition, only one copy is found in the US (Harvard Law). Gay-Lemonnyer.         Recentissima Novi Orbis, Sive Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Tabula

Amsterdam, 1697. Copper-engraved map. Small inset of New Zealand within the cartouche. Rare issue of Allard's map of North and South America, the first to show important corrections to the mapping of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Valley. "The map of America by Allard is derived from that of Frederick de Wit, c. 1675" (Burden). Significantly, however, Allard corrects the mapping of the Great Lakes and Mississippi Valley. "The former are entirely re-engraved as are the nearby waterways off the St. Lawrence River including Lake Champlain, which is moved south-west. Lake Superior is now enclosed to the west as is Lac des Puans, which is renamed Lac Illinois, placing the previous toponym correctly in Green Bay. To the west an entirely new and more recent depiction of the Mississippi valley is inserted. This is derived from that of Louis Hennepin ... published in 1697" (Burden). This is Burden's second state, with a ruled border surrounding the New Zealand inset but without the textual descriptions of climates between the neat line and gradients. It is the first state to show the important corrections noted above. Beyond the cartographic importance, the cartouche is especially attractive, with an allegorical figure of America seated within a sugar cane field inhabited by exotic animals and scenes relating to mankind's eternal search for gold.
