Satires of Decimus Junius Juvenalis. Translated into English Verse by Mr. Dryden, and several other Eminent Hands. Together with the Satires of Aulus Persius Flaccus. Made English by Mr. Dryden. To Which Is Prefixid a Discourse Concerning the Original and Progress of Satire... by Mr. Dryden.

London: Jacob Tonson, 1697. Early issue. Adorned with sculptures, being sixteen finely engraved copper plates by Hollar, including the frontispiece, to illustrate each of the Satires and one additional engraved bust of Persius. Also with engraved half-titles to each of the Satires. 8vo, contemporary full speckled calf, sometime lont ago rebacked to period style with the spine featuring gilt ruled raised bands, one compartment with a dark green morocco label lettered and ruled in gilt, endleaves renewed. xo, 501, [3] pp. A well preserved copy. Some minor toning or foxing, more so to the title and frontispiece, binding with some normal age evidence. AN IMPORTANT TRANSLATION OF ONE OF THE GREAT CLASSICAL TEXTS. Jacob Tonson published The Satires of Decimus Junius Juvenalis and Aulus Persius Flaccus originally in 1693. Tonson assembled this complete translation of Juvenal's Satires by ?various hands?, but numbers 1, 3, 6, 10, and 16 were all done by Dryden himself. Number 7 was done by his son Charles, and 14 by his son John. The complete translation of Persius is by Dryden alone, and Dryden also wrote the substantial preface, the ?Discourse concerning the original and progress of satire?, in which he explains the history of the genre and gives a critique of its principal Latin practitioners. He also provides reflections on its modern use. While the sixteen Satires are translations rather than imitations, and generally preserved the original Roman allusions, there are a number of turns of phrase which reflect satirically upon William III. Doubtless both the tragic pessimism of Junius' tenth satire, and Persius's Stoicism in the face of Neronian terror, had a contemporary resonance for Dryden. No reader of Junius? third satire could avoid hearing the translator's voice within its lines. The engraved plates are much in the same style as the somewhat more famous plates in Dryden?s ?Virgil?, which was first published the same year as this edition.

It is beautifully and extensively illustrated, especially with examples of garden plans and architecture, many of the illustrations printed from the plates and woodblocks of the 1669 edition. With owner's inscription. Both bifolia of quire E in volume III are misbound, reversing the order of its 4 leaves. There are occasional water stains, most notably in the first 4 leaves of volume II, a small hole in one engraved garden view, also slightly affecting one word of text on the back, and an occasional marginal tear, but otherwise in good condition and only slightly trimmed. The sewing is a bit loose and the binding slightly stained, but still in good condition. A fascinating window into household practices in the 17th-century Netherlands and a wealth of graphic images, especially for garden design.

Rariorum plantarum Horti Medici Amstelodamensis descriptio & icones.

      - Amsterdam, P. Blaeu, J. Blaeu and [the widow of] Abraham van Someren (1697, 1701). Two parts in two. Folio (near matching at 39.8 x 26.2 cm and 40.0 x 25.5 cm). Part I: Latin half title; Latin title in two colours with title vignette; Dutch title (do.); engraved allegorical frontispiece showing the virgin of Amsterdam in a foreign (subtropical) landscape amidst exotic people offering plants as gifts; coat-of-arms of Joannes Huydecoper, and that of Joannes Commelin, dedication leaf to the mayors of Amsterdam; [8], 220 pp., 110 engraved plates showing 112 numbered plants with explanatory text leafs in Latin and Dutch, each with floral vignette at the end of each description. Contemporary vellum. Part II: Latin half title, allegorical frontispiece, showing Theophrastus teaching botany in the real Hortus garden, with the houses along the Nieuwe Herengracht canal in the background, Dutch title page, dedication page (to the mayors of Amsterdam, and to the trustees of the Hortus). Coat-of-arms of Franciscus de Vroede (senator of the Hortus), Joannes Huydecoper (curator) and Gerbrandus Pancras (do.). [4], 224, [4] pp., and 113 plates, numbered up to 112 with fig. 4 in two different states (on recto and verso of one leaf), as intended. Thus, in total: two frontispieces, five coats-of-arms and 225 numbered plates on 222 leaves.l The plants described and figured were collected in Asia, the Americas and South Africa (Cape of Good Hope) by crew members of the merchant ships of the Dutch East and West India companies and donated to the Amsterdam Horticultural Garden, of which Jan Commelin was the director. Jan Commelin (1629-1692) died before the publication of Part I of his manuscript, and this is acknowledged on the title pages of Part I. As further explained there, the botanist, zoologist and anatomist Frederik Ruysch (1638-1731) edited the work and added some annotations. Commelin's nephew and successor, Caspar, wrote Part II. The work is of an outstanding quality, with beautiful plates in deep shades of grey and black. There are 20 plates depicting Aloes, but also many more exciting exotic plants. Part I with a few small, marginal spots, a few plates slightly age toned, but with strong impressions. Small hole in explanatory leaf to plate 79, some minor soiling to p. 218, contemporary handwriting (the Latin names of the species) in the margin of several plates. Part II with repair to the lower corner of fig. 88, traces of slight worming in the lower inner margin, but this is really unobtrusive. A faint half-circular water stain to outer margin of pp. 205-224 and index, somewhat stronger on figs 105-107, but also hardly distracting. In all, a very good copy of this rare and important work on the plants kept in the Amsterdam Hortus Botanicus, which still exists to this day at its original location. Nissen quotes a wrong number of plates, probably counting frontispieces as well. This copy is super complete with 225 numbered figs on 222 leaves, which is one plate more than usually quoted as the maximum, but that is probably because fig. 4 (Part II) has two versions, meaning there are two figures displayed on one leaf (the leaf was printed on both sides), the only plate that was done that way in this entire work. It remains unclear if all copies have this particular double plate, since very few mention it in their descriptions nor is there any remark by the bibliographers on this topic. Furthermore almost all plates show one species, and the figure number equals the number of plates, except that figs 42-44 (Part I) are on one plate, for a total of 112 numbered figs on 110 leaves. BM(NH) Cat., p. 371; Nissen BBI, 389; Pritzel, 1833; Stafleu & Cowan, 1187.

George Sale (1697, Canterbury, Kent, England 1736, London, England) was an Orientalist and practising solicitor, best known for his 1734 translation of the Qur'an into English. He was also author of The General Dictionary, in ten volumes, folio. He was educated at the King's School, Canterbury, and in 1720 became a student of the Inner Temple. It is known that he trained as a solicitor in his early years but took time off from his legal pursuits, returning at need to his profession. Sale was an early member of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. Sale became seriously ill for eight days before his death, and died at Surrey Street, The Strand, of fever on November 13, 1736. Sale was buried at St. Clement Danes. His family consisted of a wife and five children. He took the time to apply himself in the study of the eastern and other languages, both ancient and modern. Carolus Dadichi, the king's interpreter, helped Sale in his studies of oriental dialects. Sale reputedly spent 25 years in Arabia, thus acquiring his knowledge of the Arabic language and customs this was the basis of Voltaire's statements in the Dictionnaire Philosophique (articles Alcoran, Arot and Marot). On the other hand Harold Lyon Thomson, writing in the Dictionary of National Biography, stated that he never left his native country. In 1734, Sale published the translation of the Qur'an, dedicated to John Lord Carteret. Sale provided numerous notes and a "Preliminary Discourse" which was manifest with in-depth knowledge of Eastern habits, manners, traditions, and laws. Voltaire bestowed high praise on Sale's version of the Koran. Sale did not, however, place Islam at an equal level with Christianity. He stated: "As Mohammed gave his Arabs the best religion he could, preferable, at least, to those of the ancient pagan lawgivers, I confess I cannot see why he deserves not equal respect, though not with Moses or Jesus Christ, whose laws came really from heaven, yet with Minos or Numa, notwithstanding the distinction of a learned writer, who seems to think it a greater crime to make use of an imposture to set up a new religion, founded on the acknowledgment of one true God, and to destroy idolatry, than to use the same means to gain reception to rules and regulations for the more orderly practice of heathenism already established." Sale's translation of the Qu'ran has been reprinted into modern times. In January 2007, Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to the United States Congress, was sworn in on an old edition of Sale's Koran, donated to the Library of Congress in the early 19th century by Thomas Jefferson. Sale was also a corrector of the Arabic New Testament (1726) issued by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. He acquired a library with valuable rare manuscripts of Persian, Turkish, and Arabic origins (which is now held in the Bodleian Library, Oxford). (Wikipedia)

He was the first of the great British surgeons." (Power, 198-201, quoted in ONDB) This is Wiseman's chief work, based on his experiences tending the Royalist armies. "For each topic Wiseman examines the anatomy, pathology, etiology, diagnosis, prognosis and management, adding selected case histories or observations from his vast experience. These personal observations, some brief and some in extensive detail, concern 660 individual patients, a weight of evidence which contrasts sharply with the absence or plagiarism of case histories in many contemporaneous publications. These case histories constitute a rich and unique historical record of surgical reality in seventeenth-century Britain...." (ONDB) NLM/Krivatsy 13087; Wing 3106A. See G-M 5573 and Norman 2253.

Map taken from the "Mercurio Geografico", a collection of maps printed in Rome between 1660 and 1730 by De Rossi. Along the years the Atlas has been enriched with many plates; those added at the end of the XVIII century, like the present one, are much more rare to find than the maps of the first editions.

Opera estremamente rara. Etching, dated in the plate lower left, printed on two sheets of contemporary paper joined, repaired areas with loss of text, generally in good condition. Very rare.

Two large maps of Mediterranea sea - one for the western area and one for the eastern area, prepared in the Portolano style, by Francesco Maria Levanto, in the edition by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli. The two Levanto's maps, were published in his "Lo Specchio del Mare" (The Mirror of the Sea) the portolan atlas of Mediterranean published in its first edition in Genoa in 1664 ,and the second edition in 1679. Despite the atlas didn't has a great success at the time, perhaps because it was recognized as unoriginal by contemporary cartographers, Coronelli - who almost certainly did not know the model and the Nordic plates - wanted to include the atlas as the last volume in the 1698 edition of his Atlante Veneto. The cartouche of the western part bears the dedicated to Count Fabrizio Antonio Monsignani, a member of the Academy of Filergiti. Each plater, consisting of two sheets joined together, measuring 510 x 402 mm. Magnificient examples, in perfect condition. Dimensioni [Attributes: First Edition]

Of Wounds. VI. Of Gun-Shot Wounds. VII. Of Fractures and Luxations. VIII. Of the Lues Venerea. London: For B. T. and L. M. and sold by W. Keblewhite, and J. Jones, 1697. Folio. [14], 563, [14] p., including the half title A1. Eighteenth-century paneled calf, very skillfully rebacked retaining original gilt spine, period-style label. Tiny (half-inch) repaired tear in lower margin of third leaf, else a remarkably fine, fresh copy. With the contemporary ownership signature of Stewart Sparkes on half title. Third edition of an important medical text first published in 1676. "Wiseman is our surgical Sydenham. He by his skill and personality helped to raise the whole status of surgery. These case histories constitute a rich and unique historical record of surgical reality in seventeenth-century Britain." (ONDB) NLM/Krivatsy 13087; Wing 3106A. See G-M 5573 and Norman 2253.         North and South America - Carolus Allard, c. 1697.

NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD?Recentissima Novi Orbis Sive Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Tabula?. Copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Carolus Allard c. 1697. Original hand colouring, heightened with gold.Rare map of North and South America, the first to show important corrections to the mapping of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Valley. The cartouche is especially attractive, with an allegorical figure of America seated within a sugar cane field inhabited by exotic animals and scenes relating to mankind?s eternal search for gold.Allard?s map includes one of the boldest depictions of the myth of Terra Esonis, a land bridge extending from Japan to the Straits of Anian, here with over a dozen place names and only a small strait on either side. We see a beautiful example of California as an Island, based upon Nicholas Sanson?s second projection. The open ended Great Lakes and primitive early treatment of the Mississippi River are also noteworthy, as is the early Rio Colorado, extending to a lake in Apachas and Navaio regions of the Southwest, and mistakenly referencing Taos and Xila, indicating a confusion with the Rio Grande regarding the Taos reference. The interior of South America includes tribal vignettes in Brazil and a misprojected, overly wide projection of the continent. An further interesting aspect of the map is the depiction of early Australia. Quiri Regio, the Northern parts of what would become Australia, are also well delineated, showing what would become Carpentaria, the Gulf of Carpentaria and Arnhem Land. A massive island of Isabella appears above Australia. Several early place names and islands are also shown. The map of America by Allard is derived from that of Frederick de Wit, c. 1675.Reference: Burden, The Mapping of North America II: 724Price: ?2.200,- (excl.       1697 - Editio princeps of a popular Arabic text, here published together with the translation in Latin. A rare and curious work, presenting at the one hand a critical text-edition for the Arabic language-student, and at the other hand it is de facto the editio princeps of a manuscript, very popular in the Near and Far East, and containing an Arabic Evangely of the Youth of Christ, belonging to the so-called apocryphe bible literature. Compiled from older apocryphe evangelies, like the Proto-Evangely by Jacobi and the Thomas-Evangely, and enlarged with all sorts of Western religious legends, it was especially popular with the Christian heretic sect of the Nestorians or Chaldeans at Syria, Persia, and Egypt. It also spread to the far East, to China, India and Japan. The editor, Henricus Sike, came from Bremen in Germany, and at the time he was a student at the Utrecht University, where he made a great impression on Reeland, a.o. Later he became professor in Hebrew at Cambridge, in England.- Our copy without title.- Titel fehlt. Gewicht in Gramm: 500 [Attributes: First Edition]
