1697 - (MEDICINE). Wiseman, Richard. Eight Chirurgical Treatises, on these following heads, viz. I. Of Tumours. II. Of Ulcers. III. Of Diseases of the Anus. IV. Of the King's Evil. V. Of Wounds. VI. Of Gun-Shot Wounds. VII. Of Fractures and Luxations. VIII. Of the Lues Venerea. London: For B. T. and L. M. and sold by W. Keblewhite, and J. Jones, 1697. Folio. [14], 563, [14] p., including the half title A1. Eighteenth-century paneled calf, very skillfully rebacked retaining original gilt spine, period-style label. Tiny (half-inch) repaired tear in lower margin of third leaf, else a remarkably fine, fresh copy. With the contemporary ownership signature of Stewart Sparkes on half title. Third edition of an important medical text first published in 1676. "Wiseman is our surgical Sydenham. He by his skill and personality helped to raise the whole status of surgery. He was the first of the great British surgeons." (Power, 198-201, quoted in ONDB) This is Wiseman's chief work, based on his experiences tending the Royalist armies. "For each topic Wiseman examines the anatomy, pathology, etiology, diagnosis, prognosis and management, adding selected case histories or observations from his vast experience. These personal observations, some brief and some in extensive detail, concern 660 individual patients, a weight of evidence which contrasts sharply with the absence or plagiarism of case histories in many contemporaneous publications. These case histories constitute a rich and unique historical record of surgical reality in seventeenth-century Britain." (ONDB) NLM/Krivatsy 13087; Wing 3106A. See G-M 5573 and Norman 2253.         North and South America - Carolus Allard, c. 1697.

NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA HEIGHTENED WITH GOLD?Recentissima Novi Orbis Sive Americae Septentrionalis et Meridionalis Tabula?. Copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Carolus Allard c. 1697. Original hand colouring, heightened with gold.Rare map of North and South America, the first to show important corrections to the mapping of the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River Valley. The cartouche is especially attractive, with an allegorical figure of America seated within a sugar cane field inhabited by exotic animals and scenes relating to mankind?s eternal search for gold.Allard?s map includes one of the boldest depictions of the myth of Terra Esonis, a land bridge extending from Japan to the Straits of Anian, here with over a dozen place names and only a small strait on either side. We see a beautiful example of California as an Island, based upon Nicholas Sanson?s second projection. The open ended Great Lakes and primitive early treatment of the Mississippi River are also noteworthy, as is the early Rio Colorado, extending to a lake in Apachas and Navaio regions of the Southwest, and mistakenly referencing Taos and Xila, indicating a confusion with the Rio Grande regarding the Taos reference. The interior of South America includes tribal vignettes in Brazil and a misprojected, overly wide projection of the continent. An further interesting aspect of the map is the depiction of early Australia. Quiri Regio, the Northern parts of what would become Australia, are also well delineated, showing what would become Carpentaria, the Gulf of Carpentaria and Arnhem Land. A massive island of Isabella appears above Australia. Several early place names and islands are also shown. The map of America by Allard is derived from that of Frederick de Wit, c. 1675.Reference: Burden, The Mapping of North America II: 724Price: ?2.200,- (excl.       1697 - Editio princeps of a popular Arabic text, here published together with the translation in Latin. A rare and curious work, presenting at the one hand a critical text-edition for the Arabic language-student, and at the other hand it is de facto the editio princeps of a manuscript, very popular in the Near and Far East, and containing an Arabic Evangely of the Youth of Christ, belonging to the so-called apocryphe bible literature. Compiled from older apocryphe evangelies, like the Proto-Evangely by Jacobi and the Thomas-Evangely, and enlarged with all sorts of Western religious legends, it was especially popular with the Christian heretic sect of the Nestorians or Chaldeans at Syria, Persia, and Egypt. It also spread to the far East, to China, India and Japan. The editor, Henricus Sike, came from Bremen in Germany, and at the time he was a student at the Utrecht University, where he made a great impression on Reeland, a.o. Later he became professor in Hebrew at Cambridge, in England.- Our copy without title.- Titel fehlt. Gewicht in Gramm: 500 [Attributes: First Edition]

His maps of ancient geography, characterized by careful, accurate work and based largely on original research, are especially valuable. He left unknown areas of continents blank and noted doubtful information as such; compared to the lavish maps of his predecessors, his maps looked empty. His first serious map, that of Ancient Greece, was published when he was fifteen. At the age of twenty-two, he was appointed one the king's geographers, and began to attract the attention of first authorities. D'Anville's studies embraced everything of geographical nature in the world's literature, as far as he could muster it: for this purpose, he not only searched ancient and modern historians, travelers and narrators of every description, but also poets, orators and philosophers. One of his cherished subjects was to reform geography by putting an end to the blind copying of older maps, by testing the commonly accepted positions of places through a rigorous examination of all the descriptive authority, and by excluding from cartography every name inadequately supported. Vast spaces, which had before

Nuova Guinea. Het Niew Hollandt. [Map of Northern Australia, Borneo, Indonesia and New Guinea].

(circa1697]. Black and white map, ornate initial letter and double columns of text in Italian below and on the reverse. Sheet size 49.2 x 35cm, map size 24.5 x 27.4/30cm.The map was first published in 1688 as a gore sheet, a map with curved edges, which together with other similarly shaped sheets, designed to be pasted together around a base to form a globe. It is probable that this sheet is from Cornonelli's "Isolario descrittione geographico-historica, sacro-profano, antico-moderna, politica, naturale e poetica..." which was published in Venice in 1696-1697 Very good copy. Tooley 352. Coronelli is particularly famous for his construction of terrestrial and celestial globes. His most famous globes were a large pair he made for Louis XIV. Coronelli's talents were many. Born the son of a tailor in 1650, by the time of his death in 1718, he was a highly regarded theologian, mathematician and cartographer as well as having risen through the Franciscan order to become General of the Order. Over his career he produced over 500 maps and globes and founded Academia Cosmografica degli Argonauti the first geographical society. This gore sheet shows Northern Australia (from the Kimberley to the coast beyond Arnhem Land) with delightful depictions of an elephant, deer and other unlikely images of the land and its inhabitants. An important map of northern Australia, this map also offers a very interesting depiction of the section of Southeast Asia from Borneo's east coast to the western part of New Guinea, together with the islands of south-east Indonesia.

"Two large maps of Mediterranea sea - one for the western area and one for the eastern area, prepared in the Portolano style, by Francesco Maria Levanto, in the edition by Vincenzo Maria Coronelli. The two Levanto's maps, were published in his ""Lo Specchio del Mare"" (The Mirror of the Sea) the portolan atlas of Mediterranean published in its first edition in Genoa in 1664 ,and the second edition in 1679. Despite the atlas didn't has a great success at the time, perhaps because it was recognized as unoriginal by contemporary cartographers, Coronelli - who almost certainly did not know the model and the Nordic plates - wanted to include the atlas as the last volume in the 1698 edition of his Atlante Veneto. The cartouche of the western part bears the dedicated to Count Fabrizio Antonio Monsignani, a member of the Academy of Filergiti. Each plater, consisting of two sheets joined together, measuring 510 x 402 mm. Magnificient examples, in perfect condition." Venezia Venice

Orbis Veteribus Notus Auspiciis serenissimi principis Ludovici Philippi Aurelianorum ducis publici juris Factus.

Artist: Anville d Jean Babtiste ( - 1782 ) Paris; issued in: Paris; date: 1763 1697 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; condition: Folds perfectly restored; size in cm : 53,5 x 76 - description: Map shos the old world (Africa, Asia and Europe) with a decorative title cartouche. - Vita of the artist: Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville (1697 ?1782), was both a geographer and cartographer who greatly improved the standards of map-making.

Engraved portrait of Pindar and large title page vignette by M. Burghers. Pindar Π?νδαρος (c. 522 – c. 443 BC) was an Ancient Greek lyric poet from Thebes. Of the canonical nine lyric poets of ancient Greece, his work is the best preserved. Although he probably spoke Boeotian Greek he composed in a literary language that tended to rely more on the Doric dialect . There is an admixture of other dialects, especially Aeolic and epic forms, and an occasional use of some Boeotian words. He composed 'choral' songs. Scholars at the Library of Alexandria collected his compositions in seventeen books organized according to genre: 1 book of Humnoi – "hymns" 1 book of Paianes – "paeans" 2 books of Dithuramboi – "dithyrambs" 2 books of Prosodia – "processionals" 3 books of Parthenia – "songs for maidens" 2 books of Huporchemata – "songs for light dances" 1 book of Enkomia – "songs of praise" 1 book of Threnoi – "laments" 4 books of Epinikia – "victory odes" Of this vast and varied corpus, only the Epinikia – odes written to commemorate athletic victories – survive in complete form; the rest survive only by quotations in other ancient authors. PHLEGON, of Tralles in Asia Minor, Greek writer and freedman of the emperor Hadrian, flourished in the 2nd century A.D. His chief work was the Olympiads, an historical compendium in sixteen books, from the 1st down to the 229th Olympiad (776 B.C. to A.D. 137), of which several chapters are preserved in Photius and Syncellus. Two small works by him are extant: On Marvels, containing some ridiculous stories about prophecies and monstrous births, but instructive as regards ancient superstitions; On Long-lived Persons, a list of Italians who had passed the age of 100, taken from the Roman censuses. Other works ascribed to Phlegon by Suïdas are a description of Sicily, a work on the Roman festivals in three books, and a topography of Rome. Graesse 5 p295; Brunet 4 p659; Dibdin II 289.
