Thevenot, Melchisedec
Including the Tasman map of Australia; with a distinguished Provenance. 1696. Paris. Thomas Moette. Two volumes in folio (350 x 218 mm). A very difficult and tricky collation, available upon request, but more complete than most copies, as mentioned by Brunet (including the parts that would integrate the fifth part never published and the rare fragments, see collation for details). Contemporary calf, boards with gilt fillet and centre with arms of the Lindesiana; neatly and tastefully rebacked to style, with raised bands, tooled and lettered in gilt. Foxing spots and toning throughout, heavier to places, occasional soiling; folding maps generally in excellent condition but with a few tears here and there. 50,000 $ Amongst travel collections, Thevenot’s occupies a distinguished place, being one of the most complete and lavishly produced; its scope includes Africa, the Far East, South East Asia, America, amongst other places. The relation on Australia is certainly one of the most significant and primary sources of information on the Island. The collection is also of great American interest; it contains Palafox’s study on the natives, Acarette du Biscay’s relation of La Plata and Gage’s relation, which includes an important passage on Mexico, and is profusely illustrated. Asia and Africa are also well represented here, with actually more than half of the first volume being dedicated to it. Possibly the most important relation is that of Abel Tasman. The illustration is composed of maps, views and plates; the maps includes East Africa, the Indies, China, Hindustan, the Tasman ma … [Click Below for Full Description]

PRATT, Samuel.
London: Printed for Henry Bonwick, 1696. London: Printed for Henry Bonwick,, 1696. Humbly submitted to the Consideration of both Houses of Parliament. By a Lover of his Country. Octavo (187 x 115 mm). Contemporary panelled speckled calf, paper label to spine hand lettered, raised bands, boards decoratively tooled in blind, edges sprinkled red. 19th-century ownership inscriptions to front pastedown and free endpaper, and written title label to front pastedown. Spine ends and corners worn, joints split with some loss to lower spine, paper label chipped, rear hinge cracked but firm, occasional spotting to contents, a very good copy. First edition. Pratt's contribution to the debate surrounding the recoinage of 1696 was paid for by the Treasury and broadly supported William Lowndes's case for devaluation. Pratt suggests that coin has not just extrinsic value, but a third "real" value, "adherent to the Species, with respect to time and place".

BERNOULLI, JOHANN., GOTTFRIED LEIBNIZ & ISAAC NEWTON, (AND OTHERS). - [THE BRACHISTOCHRONE PROBLEM]
Leipzig: Gross & Fritsch, 1696-97. 4to. (201x169mm). (2),606;(8),594 pp. and 17 engraved folding plates (complete). Double-volume of the Acta Eruditorum for the years 1696 and 1697. An exceptionally fine and clean copy in contemporary vellum. ¶ In the June issue of Acta Eruditorum for the year 1696 Johann Bernoulli published a paper in which he presented a challenge to the best mathematicians:"Let two points A and B be given in a vertical plane. To find the curve that a point M, moving on a path AMB , must follow such that, starting from A, it reaches B in the shortest time under its own gravity."Johann adds that this curve is not a straight line, but a curve well known to geometers, and that he will indicate that curve, if nobody would do so that year. Later that year Johann corresponded directly with Leibniz regarding his challenge. Leibniz solved the problem the same day he received notice of it, and almost correctly predicted a total of only five solutions: from the two Bernoullis, himself, L'Hospital, and Newton. Leibniz was convinced that the problem could only be solved by a mathematician who mastered the new field of calculus. (Galileo had formulated and given an incorrect solution to the problem in his Dialogo). But by the end of the year Johann had still not received any other solutions. However, Leibniz convinced Johann that he should extend the deadline to Easter and that he should republish the problem. Johann now had copies of the problem sent to Journal des sçavans, the Philosophical Transactions, and directly to Newton. Earlier that year Johann had accused N … [Click Below for Full Description]

Some of the plates folded three times and the plate with the view of Stockholm showing the procession of the funeral of Carl X Gustav is printed from 13 plates, 450 cm. long. An excellent copy. ¶ Scarce first edition - in Latin - of this profusely illustrated work on the Swedish Wars, which also appeared in translations into German and French. He has played a great role in the development of the philosophy of law and political history. DAHURON, René.
1696. Cf. Arnold Arboretum I, p. 183; Bradley III, p. 171; Hunt 395 & 455; for Dahuron: NBG XII, col. 787. An unrecorded Italian translation of a French treatise on the pruning and grafting of the limbs of fruit trees, first published as Nouveau Traité de la Taille des Arbres Fruitiers (1696) with the twelve illustrations printed from woodcuts. For the present edition the twelve illustrations were engraved on three copperplates. The Hunt Library catalogue notes that the first French edition is "a rare little work, not listed in any of the larger botanical collections so far as we can find," and the present Italian translation appears to be even rarer.Dahuron was gardener to Georg Wilhelm, Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg at Celle from 1690 to 1701 and then to Wilhelm I, King of Prussia at Potsdam. In very good condition and with generous margins, with only some minor water stains at the foot, not approaching the text or illustrations. An extremely rare Italian translation of an early treatise on the grafting of fruit trees.

ADIMARI (Ludovico).
In Firenze, Nella Stamperia di S.A.S. per Gio: Filippo Cecchi, 1696. 3 parties en 1 volume in-folio. 4ff. 111pp. 4ff. 208pp. Graesse, I, 20. G. Poggiali, "Serie de' testi di lingua stampati" (1813): II, 90. [Attributes: First Edition]
