Lindsay's writings are regarded to be the first literary expression in Scotland of the Renaissance. Works to this volume include 'Of the Monarchie', 'Of the Papingo' and 'To The King's Grace'. Of The Papyngo is written in a familiar medieval manner. It is a tract full of admonition to the court and clergy. Gyraldus, Lilius Gregorius
Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden]: Hackius, et al, 1696. First collected edition. Engraved title page, 2 double-page and 6 full-page engraved plates. Folio. Giraldi, Giglio Gregorio (Lilius Gregorius Gyraldus) 1470-1552) was an Italian scholar and poet, born at Ferrara, "where he early distinguished himself by his talents and acquirements. he removed to Naples, here he lived on familiar terms with Jovianus Pontanus and Sannazaro; and subsequently to Lombardy, where he enjoyed the favour of the Mirandola family. At Miland in 1507 he studied Greek under Chalcondylas; and shortly afterwards, at Modena, he became tutor to Ercole (afterwards Cardinal) Rangone. About the year 1514 he removed to Rome, where, under Clement VII, he held the office of apostolic protonotary; but having in the sack of that city (1527) which almost coincided with the death of his patron Cardinal Rangone, lost all his property, he returned in poverty once more to Mirandola, whence again he was driven by the troubles consequent on the assassination of the reigning prince in 1533. The rest of his life was one long struggle with ill-health, poverty and neglect; and he is alluded to with sorrowful regret by Montaigne in one of his Essais (i. 34) as having, like Sebastian Castalio, ended his days in utter destitution. He died at Ferrara a man of very extensive erudition; and numerous testimonies to his profundity and accuracy have been given both by contemporary and by later scholars. His HISTORIA marked a distinctly forward step in the systematic study of classical mythology; and by his treatises DE ANNIS ET MENSIB … [Click Below for Full Description]

VERRIEN, Nicolas
Paris: Jean Jombert. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Nicolas Verrien was a late 17th-century French engraver and monogram designer. Aside from his illustrations and monographs, Verrien published a book entitled simply 'Collection of Emblems' in which he describes the manner in which he identifies emblems, executes his artistic plan, and how to provide a proper motto to support the figure. First published in 1685, this work would see numerous reissues into the 18th-century, including this 1696 second edition. These scarce 17th-century printings include thousands of illustrated figures. In 1696, Verrien changed the name of this work from the 1685 title of 'Livre Curiux et Utile' to the title of the present work. (Saunders, p.86). Illustrations in this book include emblems, figures, family crests, monograms, medallions, and more, each with explanations.

B.[=BOLS?], J.K.
Forbes, Short history of the art of distillation 81 & p. 193; STCN 313068267 (2 copies); WorldCat (1 additional copy). Very rare first edition of an early handbook on distillation. In twenty chapters it describes a wide array of applications and techniques, from oil distillation to the production of brandy and Dutch gin. It includes a description of the fermentation of fruit, the technical jargon and information about distilling equipment. The author is also identified only as "I.K.B." but with a note indicating that he had been working as a distiller for forty years and was still active. Forbes indicates that he is not the same person as Jacob Bols, as has sometimes been supposed, but whether he is a relative or was not a Bols at all, we do not know. The art of distilling had long been discussed as an alchemists' secret, as part of the apothecary's trade and later as a scientific pursuit, but practitioners of the commercial distiller's trade generally passed on their knowledge by training apprentices rather than publishing practical handbooks. The present handbook and Pieter van Keulen's similar one of 1696 are among the few examples known. Minor waterstain at the the foot of the preliminary leaves and the engraved title-page slightly thumbed, but otherwise in very good condition. The binding is somewhat soiled and has a few minor defects, but is structurally sound. [Attributes: First Edition]

Whiston, William
R. Roberts for Benj. Tooke, London, 1696. FIRST EDITION OF WHISTON'S FAMOUS DESCRIPTION OF THE EARTH'S CREATION & GREAT FLOOD; a widely praised work well-received by both Newton and Locke. Near fine condition, complete with 7 plates & the frontispiece of the solar system. William Whiston (1667 - 1752) was an English theologian, historian, physicist, and mathematician. In 1701 he resigned his Rectorship and become Isaac Newton's substitute lecturer at Cambridge; in 1702 he succeeded Isaac Newton as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. Whiston's New Theory of the Earth was in many ways the first full-length popularization of the natural philosophy Newton espoused in the Principia. In this light, Whiston's volume is a "Newtonian alternative to the Cartesian theory of the earth that had been proposed by Thomas Burnet in 1681, according to which the earth was a cooling star that dried out and cracked open, releasing the subterranean waters to cause the Flood" (Linda Hall Library). Whiston prefaced his earth theory with an essay on the style of Genesis arguing, like Newton, for a more literal hermeneutic. Drawing upon Newton's work on comets, Whiston posited that the planetary system had solidified from comets attracted by the sun's gravitation. He argued that a catastrophic comet explained Noah's flood, specifically that the arrival of a divinely guided comet had initiated the diurnal rotation of the earth, transformed its orbit from circular to elliptical, and caused the deluge through the condensation of vapors from the comet's tail. He also identi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sergeant, John.
Printed by W. Redmayne for the Author, and sold by Thomas Metcalf, 1696. Sergeant (1622-1707), a Catholic polemicist and disciple of Thomas White (alias Blacklo), was the author of three major works of philosophy: The Method to Science (1696), Solid Philosophy (1697), and Metaphysics (1700). These criticize what Sergeant termed "the idea," that is, the grounded epistemology of the Cartesians and John Locke. In opposition to their methodology, he based his work on "Aristotelian foundations and utilized the earlier syntheses of Thomas White and Kenelm Digby to argue against those modern theorists and against any pragmatic replacement of certainty by probability as philosophy's goal. In this respect Sergeant can be seen as having tried to stem the tide of mainstream modern thought" (ODNB). The appendix to this early work on the philosophy and methodology of science is "The grand controversy concerning formal mutation decided in favour of the peripatetick school" (pp. 374-429).
