THEVENOT (Melchisédech).
T. Moette, 1696. L’ouvrage examine ensuite u … [Click Below for Full Description]

DAHURON, René.
1696. Bradley III, p. 106; Janson, Pomona's harvest, pp. 164-167; VD17 23:645834Y (2 copies); WorldCat (3 other copies); cf. Hunt 395 (1696 ed). Very rare first edition of a treatise on cultivating, pruning, propagating and grafting trees, in particular fruit and nut trees, by the French gardener René Dahuron (1660-1730), royal gardener to the Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg at Celle from 1690 to 1701 and then to Wilhelm I, King of Prussia at Potsdam. The Hunt catalogue notes that it's "a rare little work, not listed in any of the larger botanical collections so far as we can find"; so rare, in fact, that they mistakenly suppose their 1696 edition is the first. That edition was also illustrated with woodcuts instead of engraved plates. The work also covers tree anatomy, growing seedlings in nurseries and "bastardières" (plots for grafted seedlings), soil preparation and planting, topiary, pest control and disease prevention. It closes with a calendar indicating when to plant fruit trees and harvest fruits, covering pear, apple, peach and plum trees. The plates depict various trees, from young and small ones to old ones, indicating where to prune. The work went through many editions and was also translated into German and Italian.Binding slightly soiled. Internally in very good condition, with only a few small spots. Japan: Unknown, 1696. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A 17th century Sino-Japanese woodblock print history of the Chu-Han Contention between the Qing and Han Dynasty bound in the fukurotoji style. The Tsuzoku kanso gundan is the tale of the conflict between the chu and han after the Qing Dynasty before Liu Bang united China in 202 BC as the emperor of the Han Dynasty. It was translated into Japanese and in turn helped shape Japanese literature away from the stylized Chinese verse of scholarly attention and began considering the more mundane, as literature as well. This was done by entertaining and educating the natives of Japan about the world, specifically China, who were banned from leaving the mainland during that time period. Pastreich writes, "Such Chinese historical novels may have appealed to Japanese readers because they covered the details of Chinese history in a lively and accessible manner, going beyond the digested and sanitized description of history to the messy details of state formation by military and political means. The content of the novels were not necessarily more accurate than official history, but they have far greater mimetic detail." This rare 1696 tale of the Han Chu Conflict is written in the typical column format with furigana and katakana usage for easier reading!

LE COMTE, Louis.
Paris Jean Anisson, 1696. Two volumes in 1, 12mo. 20 engraved plates (2 folding), and one folding table. Contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt neat repairs to joints and extremities, an attractive set. First edition of Le Comte's account from when he served as a missionary in China from 1687 to 1692. The work contains letters of members of French court circles dealing with his travels in China, and observations on Chinese civilization. The second volume consists largely of discussions on Chinese popular religion and missionary activities. Although intended to bolster the Jesuit position in the Rites Controversy, it quickly became a focus of dispute, and Refutations were written by the Jesuits' opponents and the book was eventually censored. Despite the opposition it was translated into several other languages and frequently reprinted. Cioranescu XVII, 41454; Cordier Sinica I, 39; De Backer & Sommervogel II, 1356; Quérard V, p. 58, Streit V: 2714. This edition not in Lust. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Matthew Sylvester
London: T. Parkhurst, F. Robinson, F. Lawrence & F Dunton. True 1st Edition,Frontispiece engraved by Robert White. 1696, Incredible read. The Book is Complete. It has been an honor to own this rare treasure of English/puritan history and theology. Raised Bands, Tall Folio, Pages very good in the main. Tight crisp clean copy.. foxing in sections. Very Pleasing Full Leather Rebind. Bound with Elijah's CRY 1696.This 800-page folio consists of autobiographical papers, with supporting documents, written in the main in 1664, 1665 and 1670-85, covering the seventy-year period from Baxter's birth in 1615, most expansively the years following the restoration of monarchy and Charles II's return in 1660. Its editor was the nonconformist minister Matthew Sylvester (1636?-1708). This book is an unrivalled primary historical source for seventeenth-century English political, religious, social, cultural and literary history. Baxter offers a first-hand account of events at the highest level (he met, and comments on, Cromwell, Charles II, Clarendon, Sheldon) but he is also (particularly through his ministry) a witness to the experiences of a great range of provincial members of the mercantile, clerical, artisan and agricultural classes. The Reliquiae is a foundation text for eighteenth-century ecclesiastical and historiographical traditions. Its vindication of moderate Puritanism and its accounts of the early nonconformists passed Baxterianism on to eighteenth-century dissent. In this respect, the Reliquiae was an early contributor to the literary civil war prompted by the 'Glorious Revoluti … [Click Below for Full Description]

THIS MAP IS IN FLORIDA. 22.5 x 29.5 cm. c. 1696. [Click Below for Full Description]

[ITALIAN LITERATURE] FONTANA, Carlo Giuseppe
Alberto Pazzoni e Paolo Monti, 1696. First Edition. A manual of letter-writing, illustrated throughout with examples chosen from the author's apparently very large oeuvre. The examples are on a variety of subjects, mainly chosen to illustrate the changes in tone and style of address to be used in addressing correspondents of varying stations. MORTON, Richard
1696. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Richard Morton was a 17th-century English physician who was the first to state causes of tuberculosis and the presence of tubercles in the diseases of lungs. His most famous medical treatise was dedicated to this disease, known as phthisis. This work, 'Phthisiologica' was significant in that this disease was studied very little by doctors even though it was a major cause of death to citizens of London in the 1600s. It is also the first work to contain recognized medical descriptions anorexia. According to Garrison-Morton on 'Phthisiologica,' "the first application of the principles of pathology to the study of pulmonary tuberculosis. Morton showed that the formation of tubercles is a necessary part of the development of this lung disease, and pointed out that the tubercles often heal spontaneously. He noted the enlargement of the tracheal and bronchial glands in cases of pulmonary tuberculosis." Other works featured in this 1696 edition of the works of Morton include: 'De Morbis Universal', 'De Febribus Inflammatoriis', and 'Exercitationes de Morbis'. [Attributes: First Edition]

The entire text of this work is in blackletter. ESTC states that there are two contents leaves to the rear, this copy is lacking those and ends at page 264. Closely cut to page 25, with the catchword therefore illegible. The title page spells the author's name as Lindesay, although through time there have been many other spellings including Lindsay and Lyndsay. Sir David Lindsay was a Scottish poet and Lyon king of arms. The Lyon King of Arms was the highest heraldic office. His poetry reflects the spirit of the Renaissance, specifically as a makar. Of Lindsay's poems, he gained a great reputation for his writings. His longer poems represent the range of his literary talent. Lindsay's writings are regarded to be the first literary expression in Scotland of the Renaissance. Works to this volume include 'Of the Monarchie', 'Of the Papingo' and 'To The King's Grace'. Of The Papyngo is written in a familiar medieval manner. It is a tract full of admonition to the court and clergy. Lindsay is … [Click Below for Full Description]

In very good condition, with the spine slightly soiled, paste-downs never pasted down, paper slightly toned. The third, greatly expanded edition of Blankaart's extremely influential anatomical manual, profusely illustrated with 84 detailed plates. The Dutch pharmacist, physician, and anatomist Steven Blankaart (1650-1702) followed the mechanical school. He was an early empiricist and did important research on the capillary system. But is significance lies elsewhere: through his many books in the vernacular he helped disseminate and popularize medical knowledge previously reserved for well-educated Latin readers. He teamed up with Jan ten Hoorn, a noted Amsterdam publisher of popular books, who spread Blankaart's work in handsome little 8vo's rather than costly folios. His Anatomie, first published in 1678, went through several editions and was available in Dutch, Latin, German and even English, serving as an indispensable reference tool for several decades. Blankaart's Anatomie had a lasting impact on Japanese medicine: it was the main source of Rangaku-sha Genshin Udagawa's Ihan Teiko. Indeed, the revised 1808 edition of Udagawa's ground-breaking work featured "fifty-two copper-plate etchings reproduced by Aodo Denzen from Stephen Blankaart's De nieuwe h … [Click Below for Full Description]

CUNAEUS, Petrus
Lipsiae: Jo. Christian. Wohlfarti, 1696. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Petrus Cunaeus was an early 17th-century Dutch scholar whose 'Hebrew Republic' is considered, according to Tuck, "the most powerful statement of republican theory in the early years of the Dutch Republic." (Tuck, 169) "De Republica Hebraeorum" describes ancient Hebrew kingdoms and portrays it as the model of republican governments. This book was highly influential on the formation of the Dutch Republic, even though Cunaeus foresaw the Dutch government falling just as Rome did. Ultimately, Cunaeus sought for the book to instill tolerance toward 17th-century Jews through the publication of 'Republica.' This 1696 edition features a charming full-page frontispiece.
