(William III). Act Of Parliament Jacobite Plot 1696
"Printed by Charles Bill, and the Executrix of Thomas Newcomb deceas'd, Printers to the King's most Excellent Majesty, 1696" "Sm. folio, 3 leaves, BLACK-LETTER throughout, with fine woodblock of royal arms of William III on front cover and woodblock illuminated capital on first page of text; disbound, uncut, a remarkably crisp, clean copy. 8 Gulielmi III.The death of Queen Mary in 1695 isolated William as an object of Jacobite hatred; the motive for his assassination being the stronger since his death would no longer leave her in occupation of the throne. In February James II moved to Calais and the Jacobite conspirators moved to action. As William drove home to Kensington Palace from his weekly outing in Richmond Park he had to pass along a narrow and muddy lane near Turnham Green. Here he was to be surrounded and murdered. This was the most serious of the several plots against him, but the plotters' security was lax and on 24 February William announced in parliament knowledge both of the plan and of the proposed invasion from France. This act arraigns Sir George Barclay and a number of lesser Jacobites including Johnson alias Harrison, Durant alias Durance, Michael Hare, Major George Holmes, Philip Hanford alias Browne, Richard Richardson, John Maxwell, Bryerly, Plowden and Hungate.Conspirators already languishing in Newgate are named as Counter, [Major ] John Bernardi, Robert Cassells, Robert Meldrum, James Chambers and Robert Blackbourne."

(Economics) Killigrew, Sir William
[London: 1696]. First edition. 1 vols. Sm 4to. This is Killigrew's proposal for allaying the national debt by a system of bonds and paper specie. He had presented a similar proposal in the early reign of William and Mary, and apparently revives it here with additions and answers to some of his critics. Kress and the DNB give 1663 as the date of publication but he makes references to "the reign of Charles II" and in the "Clause" the notation "To carry on the War the year 97" appears. Killigrew died in October 1695. Following this pamphlet is a single leaf entitled "To the Honourable the Knights, Citizens and Burgesses in Parliament Assembled, The Humble Petition of Percivall Brunskell, Gent." Kress 1111 giving the date of 1663 as does the DNB; Wing K.466 giving the date of 1696. Disbound, chipping and losses from removed stitching, margins closely trimmed and cropped with text loss, on the first eight pages the loss is generally a letter or part of a word so that the content is understandable, thereafter a line of text is missing on each page as well as the letters or parts of words trimmed from the margins, these losses do not seem to greatly affect comprehension of Killigrew's plan, two overlay slips to correct text on page [4] and another on page [8], some soiling.

JAILLOT, Alexis Hubert (1632-1712), after Nicolas SANSON (1600-1667)
Alexis Hubert Jaillot, Paris, 1696. Copper-engraved map, with full original colour and gold embellishment, in excellent condition. A stunning map of Normandy by Alexis Jaillot, an exceptional example with gilt embellishments One of the most important figures in French cartography, Nicolas Sanson initiated the great school of French geographers. Born in Abbeville in 1600, Sanson established his first printing house in Paris in 1638. He soon became geographer to the king, establishing himself as one of the most influential cartographers on the Continent. He was succeeded by his sons, Adrien, and Guillaume, and by his son in law Pierre Duval, who continued to publish a wealth of maps using Sanson's name. At the close of the seventeenth century, Sanson's plates were purchased by the influential cartographer Alexis Hubert Jaillot, who continued to publish his maps and atlases under Sanson's title. This stunning map of Normandy is based on Sanson's map published in 1650, but was redrawn and enlarged by Jaillot. It shows the provinces of Normandy as well as the northern tip of Brittany and part of the English Channel. Both Jersey and Guernsey are included as is Mont St. Michel off the coast of St. Malo. In keeping with all of Sanson's and Jaillot's superb maps, forests, rivers, and towns are meticulously identified and named. The map includes an ornate cartouche in the upper section as well as a scale and key. Tooley, Maps & Map-Makers , pp. 40-41. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Coronelli, Vincenzo (1650-1718)
Venice, 1696. VINCENZO CORONELLI'S EARLY DEPICTION OF THE GREAT LAKES Copperplate engraving The most famous and meritoriuous globe-maker of his time, Coronelli also produced distinguished atlases and maps. His depiction of the Great Lakes, a notable example of his abilities, shows considerable detail to the waterways and rivers of the surrounding area. Vignettes of Indian life, and French settlements are shown throughout the then French territiory. Finer maps of the Great Lakes than those by Coronelli were not published again for many years.. They reflect a careful study of the works of Jaillot, Marquette, Hennepin, and like Jaillot, the Jesuit Realation map of Lake Superior (1672). This map of Louisiana focuses more closely on the Great Lakes than any of his other maps, and was exceedingly influential in its time. It was the most important depiction of the Great Lakes of the late Seventeenth Century.. Book.

MUNTING. A.
1696. Leiden and Utrecht: Pieter vander Aa and Francois Halma 1696. 2 volumes. Folio (460 x 300mm). With engraved title and 243 plates. Contemporary blind-stamped vellum with central floral motif, held within blind ruled borders. First edition and a fine Large Paper copy printed on heavier paper of this extraordinary florilegium. Abraham Munting (1626-1683) was professor of botany at the University of Groningen and considerably enlarged the botanical garden his father Henricus Munting had founded. It was known as the "Paradise of Groningen" and became one of the most extensive gardens of the period. During the summer Munting gave botanical lectures to his students four times a week. It was in this beautiful garden that his daughter Hester died eating deadly nightshade. The above work portrays plants growing in Munting's "Paradise". His numerous botanical friends had sent the seeds of many of these plants to him from the Dutch East- and West Indies, Africa and the Americas. "Munting wrote a number of works on medical-botanical topics, but his posthumously published 'opus magnum', the 'Naauwkeurige', enjoyed particular success, at least in part due to the novelty of the plates, which in a radical departure from the iconography of the traditional florilegium, presented its plant species against a charming series of landscape backgrounds The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality. The sophisticated title-page was designed by an artist of considerable merit, Jan Goeree (1670-1731), who had been a student of Gerard de Laresse Each plate shows a different … [Click Below for Full Description]

PAUSANIAS.
Leipzig, Thomam Fritsch, 1696. Folio. A fine full vellum with richly gilt back. Both covers very richly gilt with 2 tectangular gilt borders inside each other and inside which a large amorial centerpiece (with a crown), repeated in smaller and larger size in corners of the rectangels. Slight wear to the gilding. Red and green titlelabels (wthese with a few tears). First hinges lower part cracking, but binding intact and nor loose. Title in red/black with engraved vignette. (26),943,(75) pp. A little browning to Index. Greek and latin text. A fine edition and an estimated translation of Pausanias main work. The work is yielded as the very best Pausanias-edition and is renowned for its elegance and usefulness. "Édition estimée" (Brunet IV,455). "This is emphatically and justly called "edit. opt." of Pausanias. It is a very elegant and useful work, containing the most valuable parts of preceding editions, and having the advantage of being divided into chapters, with the arguments prefixed to each book, and the notes of Xylander and Sylburgius accompanying each page; it also contains the preface of the Hanover and Franckfort editions: the Greek text is given with great purity by Kühnius, to which are added his valuable and learned notes. The work is becoming scarce, and copies sell at a high price." (Dibdin II:272-73). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Rouen: Anthoine Palmier(1696). 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Louis-François de Boufflers (January 10, 1644 - August 22, 1711) was a French soldier. He was created count of Cagny and duke of Boufflers and named marshal of France. BOUFLERS, Louis Francois, Duc de, commonly called the Chevalier Bouflers, a peer and marshal of France, and a general of distinguished reputation, was born January 10, 1644. Having early entered the army, he was raised in 1669 to the rank of colonel of dragoons. In the conquest of Lorraine he served under Marshal de Crequy. In Holland he served under Turenue, frequently distinguishing himself by his skill and bravery; and when that celebrated leader was killed by a cannon-shot in 1675, he commanded the rear-guard during the retreat of the French army. After performing various military services in Germany, in Flanders, and on the frontiers of Spain, he was created, in 1690, general of the army of the Moselle, and contributed materially to the victory of Fleurus. In the following year he acted as lieutenant-general, under the king in person; and during the investment of Mons, he was wounded in an attack on the town. He conducted the bombardment of Li6ge, which was defended by an enemy superior in numbers, and afterwards forced the allied generals to abandon Luxembourg. He was entrusted with the command against King William at the siege of Namur, and took part in the victory of Steinkirk. For these important services he was raised in 1693 to the rank of marshal of France, and in 1G95 was made a duke. In 1G94 he was appointed governor of French Flanders a … [Click Below for Full Description]
