DERHAM, William.
Imp. James Knapton, at the Crown. London, 1696.

Gyraldus, Lilius Gregorius
Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden]: Hackius, et al, 1696 - Giraldi, Giglio Gregorio (Lilius Gregorius Gyraldus) 1470-1552) was an Italian scholar and poet, born at Ferrara, "where he early distinguished himself by his talents and acquirements. he removed to Naples, hwere he lived on familiar terms with Jovianus Pontanus and Sannazaro; and subsequently to Lombardy, where he enjoyed the favour of the Mirandola family. At Miland in 1507 he studied Greek under Chalcondylas; and shortly afterwards, at Modena, he became tutor to Ercole (afterwards Cardinal) Rangone. About the year 1514 he removed to Rome, where, under Clement VII, he held the office of apostolic protonotary; but having in the sack of that city (1527) which almost coincided with the death of his patron Cardinal Rangone, lost all his property, he returned in poverty once more to Mirandola, whence again he was driven by the troubles consequent on the assassination of the reigning prince in 1533. The rest of his life was one long struggle with ill-health, poverty and neglect; and he is alluded to with sorrowful regret by Montaigne in one of his Essais (i. 34) as having, like Sebastian Castalio, ended his days in utter destitution. He died at Ferrara a man of very extensive erudition; and numerous testimonies to his profundity and accuracy have been given both by contemporary and by later scholars. His HISTORIA marked a distinctly forward step in the systematic study of classical mythology; and by his treatises DE ANNIS ET MENSIBUS, and on the CALENDARIUM., he contributed to bring about the reform of the calendar, which was u … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Printed by J.Heptinstall, for Henry Playford, at his Shop or at his House 1696. Folio, pp. [2], 30; title within a mourning border, printed music throughout, with the text of the Ode on the verso of the title-page as well as within the music; small dampstain to lower inner margin, two or three short nicks to blank lower margin neatly repaired, but a very good copy in modern panelled calf, gilt; bookplate of Thomas Wyatt Bagshawe, book-label of J. O. Edwards.First edition of Dryden's moving elegy to his friend Purcell. The musical setting by Blow, for flutes and two counter-tenors, is generally considered his finest work.On Purcell's death in November 1695 he was at the height of his powers and reputation, with stage and publishing commissions pouring in. The advertisements here list the Harmonia Sacra and Deliciae Musicae as well his revision of Playford's Introduction to Music and proposals for the publication of his instrumental works by his widow. His pre-eminence would be sealed by Playford two years later with the publication of the first volume of Orpheus Britannicus.Dryden and Blow were both old friends of Purcell. Purcell was linked to Dryden through the Howards (Dryden's wife, Lady Elizabeth, was a patron, her niece a pupil) and composed new music for the 1690s revival of Dryden's The Tempest, as well as King Arthur (1691, often considered Purcell's dramatic masterpiece) and The Indian Queen (1695). Blow's career had intertwined with that of Purcell for many years. Purcell may once have studied under him; Blow's Venus and Adonis (1681) was an important prec … [Click Below for Full Description]

Titelblatt in schwarz-rotem Druck, (10), 1052 [richtig 1060], (4) Seiten. Pergamentband der Zeit mit durchgezogenen Bünden.. VD17, 1:020995K. - Grünberg 63. - Bircher C2483. [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam: P. Schenk, 1696. Copper-engraved map, full period hand colouring. 21 3/4 x 24 1/2 inches. Lovely 17th century map of North and South America with California as an island. This elegant map is noted for its cartouches designed by Romein de Hooghe. "The most notable feature of this map is the two separate titles for North and South America. These, it is believed, are etched by the noted artist Romein de Hooghe. The cartography reflects that typical of the period for Amsterdam. Five Great Lakes are shown, the two western ones being left open to the west, there is an old style depiction of the Mississippi basin, and California is depicted in a Foxe style insular format" (Burden). Oxford: e Theatro Sheldoniano, 1696. Leather Bound. Very Good. E Theatro Sheldoniano, Oxford., 1696. Folio, [xii],l,[ii],159,[25]pp. Contemporary leather boards, Modern reback in contemporary style. Wear to extremities. Internally excellent. End pages have browning and chipping, the rest of the book is clean and bright, without markings, excessive soiling or foxing. See our pictures.

The library formed by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (1571-1631) during the early seventeenth century was the major antiquarian collection in England at the time, and as early as the 1620s was a landmark in the political and cultural life of the country, containing as it did both outstanding literary manuscripts and important state records. The library counted Ben Jonson, Sir Walter Raleigh, and Francis Bacon among its borrowers. After his death the library passed successively to his son and grandson, and it was the latter, John, who authorized the publication by his librarian, Thomas Smith, of the first printed catalogue. This catalogue is particularly valuable, as it pre-dates the disastrous fire of 1731, which destroyed or damaged over two hundred of the manuscripts. Smith's catalogue is therefore the prime record for volumes now lost. Smith also knew the Cotton family well and the Latin essays, with which he prefaced his catalogue, are an important source for the history of the family and for the development of the collection.

When he reached the Papal city of Avignon, after a week on icy roads, he revealed to his followers that he was really going to Spain, to get the help to invade England that he was not getting from France. In so doing he was hijacking his brother Henry Benedict, who had proposed to do just that.himself. The previous September, after 5 months in the heather following Culloden, Bonnie Prince Charlie was the most famous man in Europe. He took ship with the French from Loch nan Uamh on 20th September (old style) and landed at Roscoff.on10th October (new style). He arrived in Paris to enormous cheering crowds. One of the first to entertain him to supper was the Comte d'Argenson, who had kept abreast of his campaign with frequent reports from the Marquis d'Éguilles. (D'Éguilles. was captured at Culloden but freed after negotiating the surrender of Inverness). However, the honeymoon lasted only about a fortnight. Charles began demanding help for an invasion of England, which the French refused. They talked only in terms of a small expedition to Scotland. He had no gr … [Click Below for Full Description]
