Included as the seventh plea is Erard's presentation at the celebrated case of the Duc de Mazarin and his wife Hortense née Mancini. The case is described in detail. It was printed in English in 1699. 8vo (188 × 120 mm), pp. [iv], 495, [1]. Woodcut device to title, ornaments to text. Occasional light browning. POUCHOT DE CHANTASSIN, Claude-Michel, & Joseph-Jacques Le Maire.
London: Daniel Dring, 1696. Octavo (164 x 104 mm) Contemporary sprinkled sheep, unlettered, double blind rules. A little rubbed, neatly rebacked and with some skillful restoration to the corners, light browning, slight stain to the fore-edge which does not carry to the margins, a very good copy. 2 folding maps, and 5 engraved plates. First editions in English. The first part is a translation of Pouchot de Chantassin's Relation du Voyage et Retour des Indes Orientales pendant les Années 1690 & 1691. Par un Garde de la Marine Servant sur le Bord de Monsieur Duquesne (Paris, 1692). His name is not given in this translation, but appears in the privilege to the French edition. "The author was employed in French factory posts set up in India, and travelled amongst the India Ocean Islands" (NMM). Pouchot's account of the fight "with fourteen Dutch and English ships" at Fort St. George (pp. 96-105) is contested by Dampier in A New Voyage, explaining that he feels obliged to relate the story (which was given to him by "the Gunner's Mate of Capt. Heath's Ship, a very sensible Man") because "there is such a plausible Story made of it in Captain Duquesne's Late Voyage to the East-Indies" (I, p. 522). Dampier describes a rather inconclusive and desultory engagement, with the Dutch and English "fleet" being an accidental gathering of heavily laden and under-armed merchantmen, rather than the well-organized force under two admirals portrayed in the French account published here. The second part is a translation of Le Maire's Les voyages du Sieur Le Maire aux îles Canaries, Cap-Verd, Sénég … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jan de Marre
Jan de Marre (1696-1763) was a commander of a Dutch East India Company ship. He first joined the company at the age of 13, and achieved the rank of commander in 1728. He retired from the Company in 1732, and moved on to a career of writing and of directing a theatre company, among other interests.  This volume, in Dutch, remains in an intact original binding in good plus condition with near fine contents. The half leather binding features decorative gilt spine bands and leather corners over speckled paper boards with red-speckled page edges.  The binding is sound and square with wear at the corners, abrasions to the rear board, and overall wear and some cracking to the spine.  The contents are bright and surprisingly clean, with very mild toning and occasional light spotting confined to the page edges. There are two engraved title vignettes and one engraved portrait of the author.  All in all an extremely nice copy of this scarce work.

[Pufendorf, Samuel]
[Nürnberg] [Christophorus Riegel] 1696 or 1697. Plate mark 30 x 57,5 cm. The whole sheet 35 x 65,5. Etching and engraving. Very nice condition.. A very dramatic depiction of the sea batlle of the Sound (Öresund) between the swedish and dutch fleets in 1658. The dutch came to rescue the danish from the newly gained swedish control of Denmark and the siege of Copenhagen, and they suceeded. The swedish fleet was badly damaged and Denmark west of the Sound was saved, while the danish provinces east of the sound remained under swedish control. The border between Sweden and Denmark has ever since then been the Sound. The legend names the Swedish Ships involved in the sea-battle. Some of them are: Caesar, Apollo, Ceruus, Westerwijk, Amarantha, Cignus, Luna Dimidiata, Fides, Wismaria, Sudermannia and Ostrogothia. In the distance, can be seen, the fortification of Kronborg and the towns of Helsingör and Helsingborg. The plate was published for the work "De Rebus a Carolo Gustavo Sveciae Rege gestis commentariorum libri septem" an offical history of the the Swedish wars with Denmark and Poland 1655-1660. The author Samuel Pufendorf was a german historian who held the first chair of history at the newly establihed University of Lund. Acquaforte e bulino, 1696. MUNTING. A.
Leiden and Utrecht: Pieter vander Aa and Francois Halma 1696. 2 volumes. Folio (460 x 300mm). With engraved title and 243 plates. Contemporary blind-stamped vellum with central floral motif, held within blind ruled borders. First edition and a fine Large Paper copy printed on heavier paper of this extraordinary florilegium. Abraham Munting (1626-1683) was professor of botany at the University of Groningen and considerably enlarged the botanical garden his father Henricus Munting had founded. It was known as the "Paradise of Groningen" and became one of the most extensive gardens of the period. During the summer Munting gave botanical lectures to his students four times a week. It was in this beautiful garden that his daughter Hester died eating deadly nightshade. The above work portrays plants growing in Munting's "Paradise". His numerous botanical friends had sent the seeds of many of these plants to him from the Dutch East- and West Indies, Africa and the Americas. "Munting wrote a number of works on medical-botanical topics, but his posthumously published 'opus magnum', the 'Naauwkeurige', enjoyed particular success, at least in part due to the novelty of the plates, which in a radical departure from the iconography of the traditional florilegium, presented its plant species against a charming series of landscape backgrounds? The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality. The sophisticated title-page? was designed by an artist of considerable merit, Jan Goeree (1670-1731), who had been a student of Gérard de Laresse? KØBENHAVN - DAHLBERG, ERIK.
Kobberstukket prospekt af København, stukket af Jean le Pautre efter tegnet forlæg af Erik Dahlberg. (Nürnberg, 1696). Lysmål: 104x28,5 cm. Med brede marginer. I guldramme..

BERNOULLI, Johann & Jakob; LEIBNIZ.; L'HOSPITAL; TSCHIRNHAUS; NEWTON.
In the June issue of Acta Eruditorum for the year 1696 Johann Bernoulli published a paper in which he presented a challenge to the best mathematicians:<br/><br/> <i>"Let two points A and B be given in a vertical plane. To find the curve that a point M, moving on a path AMB , must follow such that, starting from A, it reaches B in the shortest time under its own gravity."</i><br/><br/> Johann adds that this curve is not a straight line, but a curve well known to geometers, and that he will indicate that curve, if nobody would do so that year. Later that year Johann corresponded directly with Leibniz regarding his challenge. Leibniz solved the problem the same day he received notice of it, and almost correctly predicted a total of only five solutions: from the two Bernoullis, himself, L'Hospital, and Newton. Leibniz was convinced that the problem could only be solved by a mathematician who mastered the new field of calculus. (Galileo had formulated and given an incorrect solution to the problem in his <i>Dialogo</i>). <br/><br/> But by the end of the year Johann had still not received any other solutions. However, Leibniz convinced Johann that he should extend the deadline to Easter and that he should republish the problem. Johann now had copies of the problem sent to <i>Journal des sçavans</i>, the Philosophical Transactions, and directly to Newton. Earlier that year Johann had accused Newton for having filched from Leibniz' papers. Manifestly, both Johann and Leibniz interpreted the silence from June to December as a demonstration that the problem had baffled Newton. They i … [Click Below for Full Description]

BERNOULLI, Jakob.
Very rare first separate edition of Bernoulli's solution of the isoperimetric problem, which represents the beginnings of the calculus of variations, later to be developed extensively by Euler and Lagrange.<br/><br/> In 1696 Johann Bernoulli had posed as a challenge to the mathematicians of Europe the problem of finding the curve of quickest descent, the so-called brachistochrone. Solutions were given by L'Hospital, Leibniz, Newton, and by Johann's brother Jakob in the May 1697 issue of Acta Eruditorum, At the end of this memoir Jakob raised the isoperimetric problem as a challenge to his readers, but especially to Johann (he even offered Johann a prize of 50 silver ecus for a satisfactory solution within three months). The isoperimetric problem asks for the curve of a given length joining two fixed points in the plane for which a certain integral is a maximum (a special case would be to maximize the area contained between the curve and the straight line joining the two points). "Johann underestimated the complexity of this problem by failing to perceive its variational character; and he furnished an incomplete solution... and thereby brought upon himself the merciless criticism of his brother. This was the beginning of alienation and open discord between the brothers - and also the birth of the calculus of variations. A comparison of Jakob's solution [in the offered work] with Johann's analysis of the problem... clearly shows Johann's to be inferior. Nevertheless, Jakob was not able to enjoy his triumph, since - for reasons that remain mysterious - the sealed envelope cont … [Click Below for Full Description]
