LABAT, Jean-Baptiste
Toulouse: J. Boude, 1696. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Jean-Baptiste Labat was a 17th-century Frenchman known for his eclectic interests including weapons and sword fighting. He published 'The Art of Fencing' which, according to Castle, is perhaps "the soundest treatise on practical fencing" and that subsequent books on the French school of fencing are merely imitations of Labat's. Labat claimed that the French school reformed and augmented the Italian methods. (Kirkland) This two-part first edition includes both of Labat's works on fencing - 'Art of Fencing' and 'Questions on Art of Fencing'. 'Questions' was published in 1701 and was a follow up on his widely popular treatise on sword fighting. The two treatises together are extremely valuable and markedly rare. [CHOISEUL DU PLESSIS-PRASLIN (Gilbert de)]
Parme, Alberto Pazzoni & Paolo Monti, 1696, in-8, [24] ff. n. ch.

William Salmon
H. Rhodes: London. Very rare antique 1696 copy. The book has been nicely rebacked with a new spine and new endpapers. It would be a good copy, except it lacks one leaf which contains page 243/244. The leather covers have some scuffing and wear with some corner wear and edge wear. The binding of the book is good and strong. The edges of the backside of the title page and last advertisement page have been reinforced with what looks like tissue paper or acid free archival tape. The interior has some tanning, staining, soiling, foxing, and grubbiness. Some pages have some heavy tanning and foxing. There are a couple of pages with some small chips or a small tear. One page has a funny page corner near the gutter and there are likely some pages with a creased corner. There is some minor worming to the top page corner of the first few pages. Along with that there may be the occasional page with some kind of other minor imperfection. The book contains a variety of fascinating 17th century recipes including recipes for meats, jellies, seafood, desserts, medicine, perfumes, etc. It measures approximately 7 1/8 inches by 5 7/8 inches and is 393 pages long. MUNTING, Abraham.
Leiden/Utrecht, Pieter vander Aa/Francois Halma, 1696. First edition. Folio. 243 richly engraved botanical plates depicting specific genus of flora, as well as numerous decorated head & tail peices, and a magnificent frontispiece after Jan Goeree. Near contemporary full calf, this being professionally rebacked, with old spine laid down, red & black title, with some slight soiling to some of the rear index pages, but otherwise a lovely bright example. [xxxiv], 929, [64]pp. Abraham Munting (1626-1683) was a leading botanist of his day. Despite being published posthumously, this florilegium represented the pinnacle of his work. Based at the University of Groningen, in a garden inherited from his father Henricus, he dedicated much of his life to the development and study of exotic plants from across the globe. Colleagues sent seeds of plants from the Dutch East and West Indies, South Africa, the Americas, etc. which Munting cultivated in the garden. The plates which depict these specimens are unattributed, with a single exception, lettered 'Mulder Fecit' - Joseph Mulder (Dutch, 1659/60 - 1710 after) was an engraver active in Amsterdam. 'Munting wrote a number of works on medical-botanical topics, but his posthumously published opus magnum, the Naauwkeurige, enjoyed particular success, at least in part due to the novelty of the plates, which in a radical departure from the iconography of the traditional florilegium, presented its plant species against a charming series of landscape backgrounds. The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality. The sophisticate … [Click Below for Full Description]

DALE, Antonius van
Amstelodami: Henricum & viduam Theodori Boom, 1696. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Antonius van Dale was a 17th-century Dutch preacher who is best remembered for his sermons and writings on superstitions, witch-hunts, and the supernatural. In 1696, Dale published his work 'Dissertations on the Origins of Idolatry and Superstitions'. In this book, Dale considered the nature of true and false prophecy according to the Old and New Testaments. He also sought to dismiss the influence of Satan and the existence of miraculous and supernatural events. Because of this, this work was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1737. This work was also known to be owned and referenced by John Locke. (Harrison/Laslet 907a). [Attributes: First Edition]

Incisione all'acquaforte, finita a bulino. Coloritura antica con alcuni ritocchi, in buone condizioni. Rara. "Rare bird's eye view of Naples, first published in 1696. Example of the third edition, with the imprint ""Napoli 1748"". Petrini's view is the first map of great editorial work produced in Naples for clear commercial purposes. Beck, Matthias Friedrich
Augsburg, Jakob Koppmayer for Lorenz Kroniger and the heirs of Gottlieb Göbel, 1695-1696. Folio (213 x 330 mm). (9) pp. of text with an engraved headpiece, (27) pp. of engraved astrological charts, 80 pp. of text with 4 engravings in the text. Title-page printed in red and black. Contemporary unsophistocated boards. Only edition of this rare treatise on the astronomy, astrology and allied sciences of the Arabs, Persians and Turks. Once "said to be the first book printed with Persian characters" (Anderson, The library of the late George H. Hart of New York City, Part II [1922], no. 471), it remains an impressive achievement, even if the oriental languages are here in fact rendered in Hebrew letters, while the Persian specimens are engraved. (The first book in Persian characters was produced at Leiden more than a half-century earlier.) - The Swabian theologian Beck (1649-1701) studied history and oriental literature at Jena, soon surpassing his teachers. "The principal object of his studies always remained the oriental languages; and his great knowledge of Hebrew, Samaritan, Chaldaic, Syriac, Ethiopian, Persian, Arabic, and Turkish gained him such renown that he even drew a pension from the Prussian crown for them" (ADB II, 218). - First and last leaf somewhat browned, otherwise very clean. Stamp "Eigentum der Stadt Augsburg" to title-page. VD 17, 39:125183T. Caillet 901. Lalande p. 330. Gardner II, 102. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[Click Below for Full Description]

In 1696, Dale published his work Dissertations on the Origins of Idolatry and Superstitions .
