L'HÔSPITAL, Guillaume François Antoine, Marquis de.
Paris: L'imprimerie Royale / Jean Boudot, 1696/1700. First edition. Hardcover. A fine sammelband comprising the first editions of the first books on the differential and integral calculus, respectively. “It was through his wide network of acquaintances in various European countries that Leibniz put into effect all his strategies for the spread of his analysis. The presence first of Jacob Hermann, the favourite pupil of Jacob Bernoulli, and then of Nicolaus I Bernoulli, the nephew of the Bernoulli brothers, as professors of mathematics in Padua was one outlet ... In France it was through the Oratorian circle of Nicolas Malebranche (1638–1715) that Johann Bernoulli introduced in 1691 the Leibnizian calculus. His lessons to the Marquis de l'Hôpital led to the draft of the first treatise of differential calculus (1696) [first offered work], and it was under the influence of Malebranche that some years later appeared the first works on the integral calculus by Louis Carré in 1700 [second offered work] and Charles René Reyneau in 1708. The spread and acceptance of the Leibnizian calculus was transferred in this way to the wide public, through the manuals and textbooks written for students at universities or ecclesiastical colleges.” (Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics, p.56).

“Following the classical custom, [the first work] starts with a set of definitions and axioms... The difference (differential) is defined as the infinitely small portion by which a variable quantity increases or decreases continuously. Of the two axioms, the first postulates that quantit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dach, Simon.
Königsberg, Heinrich Boye, 1696.. . "Here, in the songs of the East Prussian poets, the endeavors of the musical poets found their fulfillment. He, together with Claudius who was spiritually related to him, is one of the rare examples of a man born in straitened circumstances, living in a very limited milieu and finding his strength precisely in this situation" (Faber du Faur). - Etwas gebräunt. SYDENHAM, Thomas.
First edition of Swan?s translation, and the first publication of Samuel Johnson's seven-page ?Life of Dr. Sydenham.? The publisher of this edition, Edward Cave, was the originator of the Gentleman?s Magazine, which printed some of Samuel Johnson?s first published work. It seems likely that Swan was introduced to Cave who commissioned this translation and then commissioned a biography from Johnson. The ?Life? was reprinted in the Gentleman's Magazine later in the year (December).Swan?s was the second edition in English of Sydenham?s complete works, after Pechey?s of 1696, but it was Swan?s edition that became the main English source for Sydenham?s thoughts until that of R.G. Latham in two volumes (1848?"50) superseded it. ?The sound judgement and acute observations of Thomas Sydenham, the English Hippocrates, freed clinical medicine from the last vestiges of medievalism, and set the pattern for further progress?
JAILLOT, Alexis-Hubert.
1696 - Paris, 1692. Original colour. Two sheets conjoined, total 575 x 890mm. Very fine condition, crisp impression. Early edition of Sanson's map of the British Isles, redrawn on a larger scale by Jaillot at the request of Sanson's heirs, first published in the 'Atlas Nouveau' from 1674. PRATT, Samuel
London: Henry Bonwick,, 1696. Made Practicable and Easie To The Government And Subject. Humbly submitted to the consideration of both Houses of Parliament. By a Lover of his Country. Octavo (188 × 115 mm). Rebound with blue boards and blue cloth spine, lettered in black, cream endpapers, edges speckled red. First gathering with diminishing water stain, small chips to edges of title page, otherwise a very good copy. First edition. Pratt's contribution to the debate surrounding the recoinage of 1696 was paid for by the Treasury and broadly supported William Lowndes' case for devaluation. Pratt suggests that coin has not just extrinsic value, but a third "real" value, "adherent to the Species, with respect to time and place".

COCK, David.
Bierens de Haan 902; Muller, Pop. proza 1050; STCN (1 copy); WorldCat (same copy); cf. Bywater & Yamey, pp. 103-104. Second copy located of the 1696 edition of Dirck de Hollander's standard revision of a standard Dutch mathematical exercise book (with answers) for use in schools. The present edition describes itself as the fifth, but is at least the tenth and probably little changed from the 1685 edition, which also called itself the fifth. All 17th-century editions are very rare, the STCN recording 3 copies of one (1664) and no more than 2 copies of any other (some are not recorded in the STCN at all). The simple assignments are designed to teach basic arithmetic and bookkeeping for practical commercial purposes. David Cock was an Arnhem school master, active as such in at least the years 1641 to 1652. His present text book was his most successful work, with many further editions and adaptations to 1799.Slightly browned, but still in good condition. Boards slightly warped. A valuable window into 17th-century Dutch education and training for trade and commerce.
