RUYSCH, Frederik
RUYSCH, Frederik, et al. EPISTOLA (ANATOMICA) PROBLEMATICA, PRIMA(-TERTIA & DECIMA). Amstelaedami, apud Joannem Wolters, 1696(-1700). First editions of the first 13 (of 16) "Epistolae problematicae," with 13 of 16 engraved and numbered plates. Each of the 13 letters has its own title or half-title page and separate pagination, but [220] pp. altogether including plates. 4to., a partial, disbound bookblock with its final 2 ff. detached. Ex-library; each letter has at least one blind-stamped library seal and sometimes more. Epistola duodecima (no. 12) lacks its plates, nos. 13-15. The top and bottom pages are dust-soiled. The first leaf is edge chipped and has a lacuna, but without any loss of type. The second leaf has corresponding edge chipping. Some scant, light foxing near the end, else clean within. The "Epistolae problematicae" were written by various correspondents to Ruysch and include his replies. Ruysch (1638-1731), a Dutch surgeon and anatomist and professor of anatomy at Leiden and Amsterda, mastered a method of minute injection of anatomical structures allowing detailed studies. He made many anatomical investigations and important discoveries using this technique. His correspondents in this series of letters are Johannes Gaubius (nos. 1-3), Johannes Jacobus Campdomercus (no. 4), Gerardus Frentz (no. 5), Johannes Henricus Graetz (nos. 6-8), Andreas Ottomar Goelicke (no. 9), Bartholomaeus Keerwolff (no. 10), Johann Christian Wolf (no. 11), Michael Ernst Ettmuller (no. 12), and Christian Wedel (no. 13). Croese, Gerard [1642 - 1710]. Keith, George [1639? - 1716].
London: Printed for John Dunton, at the Raven in Jewen-street, 1696. 1st Edition in English (Sabin 17584; Smith I, 481; Wing C6965). Early full, albeit plain, brown calf binding. General binding wear. Early po signatures to ffep, and top portion of t.p. Evidence of light dampstaining throughout, occasionally, though unobtrusively, extending into text. Gradually decreasing horizontal 1.5 inch track of worming to 2I6 - 2L4, toward the gutter side of the text, slightly affecting the printed text, though not the sense thereof. Occasional sign of prior leaf adhesion. Withal, a copy in Very Good antiquarian condition.. [xvi], 189 [3], 276, 40 pp. The final 40 pp include the letter written by George Keith (pp 1 -30), as well as Our Antient Testimony Renewed ... Given forth by a meeting of publick Friends, and others, at Philadelphia in Pennsylvania (pp. 31-40) with special title-page. See Smith for a history of this English translation of Croese [who, by the way, was not a Friend], and the errors therein that occasioned Keith's letter, etc. As Smith relates, "... the English translation has some matter inserted in it furnished by Friends, in order to clear themselves from misrepresentations which this history contrains..." While the work very well represented in an institutional setting, it is now decidely rare in the trade, with ABPC & AmEx showing no copies at auction these past 30+ years, and AmEx showing the last copy offered in the trade to be 1976, by Quaritch.

MUNTING, Abraham
Leiden and Utrecht, Pieter vander Aa and François Halma, 1696. Folio (387 x 260 mm), pp [xxxvi] 929 [64], with engraved frontispiece, engraved head- and tailpieces, and 243 engraved plates; a fine copy, bound in two volumes, in contemporary Dutch blindstamped vellum with large arabesque in blind on front and back covers. First edition of one of the most attractive Dutch florilegia of the seventeenth century. Abraham Munting (1626-1683) was professor of botany at the University of Groningen, and took over and enlarged the botanic garden founded by his father Henricus. It was known as the 'Paradise of Groningen' and became one of the most famous gardens of its time. Botanical colleagues sent him seeds of numerous exotic plants from the Dutch East and West Indies, South Africa, the Americas, etc. The present work depicts some of the exotic and remarkable plants growing in the garden. It is one of the earliest and most important documents concerning Japanese flora and its importation into the West, predating Thunberg's works by almost one hundred years. 'Munting wrote a number of works on medical-botanical topics, but his posthumously published opus magnum, the Naauwkeurige, enjoyed particular success, at least in part due to the novelty of the plates, which in a radical departure from the iconography of the traditional florilegium, presented its plant species against a charming series of landscape backgrounds . The illustrations are remarkable for their elegance and originality. The sophisticated title-page . was designed by an artist of considerable merit, Jan Goeree (1670-17 … [Click Below for Full Description]

[BOHUN, Edmund.]
London: Printed for Richard Cumberland,, 1696. from 60 Pence in the Ounce to 75 Pence, Considered; With the Consequences thereof. Quarto signed in twos, (200 x 152 mm). Modern speckled calf, smooth spine lettered in gilt. Spine a little faded, minor scuffing to sides, contents faintly browned, tiny old ink stain and cross to bottom outer corner of title. An excellent copy. First and only edition of the author's contribution to the currency debate which urged the defeat of Lowndes's recommended devaluation. Edmund Bohun (1645?-1699) had a controversial career as licenser of the press, largely due to the wording of the title of a pamphlet on William and Mary which he had authorised and which ultimately led to his emigrating to South Carolina in 1698, where he held the post of Chief Justice of the South Carolina court for a year until he succumbed to a fever epidemic.

Amsterdam, Henri Wetstein, 1696.. Moreau).
